[Centraal] Crisis in Syri� #266 Iran is altijd nr. 1

Syri� is een seculiere republiek met 22,5 miljoen inwoners en heeft sinds 2000 als president Bashar al-Assad. In de presidentsverkiezingen van 2014 won hij met 88,7% van twee tegenkandidaten. Voor 2000 was vanaf 1971 zijn vader Hafiz al-Assad aan de macht die in 1981 een gewelddadige opstand van het Moslimbroederschap neersloeg. Nadat eind 2010 in Tunesi� demonstraties begonnen en daarbij Ben Ali werd verjaagd verspreiden de demonstraties zich door de hele regio waaronder in Syri�. Volgens delen van de oppositie werd er door de overheid op vreedzame demonstranten geschoten.

In reactie op de demonstraties kondigde Assad hervormingen aan, er werd een nieuwe grondwet aangenomen waarin niet langer stond dat de Ba'ath-partij, een Arabisch nationalistische en socialistische partij, de staat en de samenleving leid en er ook andere politieke partijen mochten gevormd worden die niet lid zijn van het National Progressive Front, wel mochten partijen niet gebaseerd zijn op religie of etnische basis. Vervolgens werden er in 2012 parlementsverkiezingen gehouden waarbij ook partijen die niet lid zijn van het NPF zetels wonen, door de rebellen werden deze verkiezingen als ondemocratisch en oneerlijk beschouwd. In juni 2014 werden er presidentsverkiezingen gehouden waarbij ook andere kandidaten dan Assad mochten meedoen, dit werd door de rebellen ook als een farce gezien.

Tot nu toe zijn er in de oorlog meer dan 150.000 doden gevallen. Etnische groepen spelen een belangrijke rol in de oorlog, Syri� bestaat voor 74% uit soennieten (van wie 10% Koerden), 13% sjiieten (met de alawieten als belangrijkste subgroep), 10% christenen en 3% druzen.

Een factor in de oorlog zijn de Koerden, een volk van 35 miljoen mensen met een eigen taal en cultuur, maar geen eigen land. Ze zijn verspreid over onder meer Turkije, Syri�, Irak (Iraaks-Koerdistan), Iran en de vroegere Sovjet-Unie. De Syrische Koerden vechten tegen zowel de regering als de rebellen. Ze hebben in de door hun bestuurden gebieden autonomie uitgeroepen. Net als de regering zijn ze seculier.

Landen die de Syrische regering steunen: Rusland (sinds de Koude Oorlog een bondgenoot en Syri� heeft de laatst overgebleven marinebasis van Rusland in de regio), China, Iran, Algerije, Soedan, Wit-Rusland, Venezuela, Irak en Noord-Korea.

Rebellen
Vrij Syrisch Leger - verschillende milities die zich zo noemen
Islamitisch Front - salafistische islamistische organisatie, verwerpt representatieve democratie en secularisme
Al-Nusra Front - onderdeel van Al Qaida

IS(IS) - soennitische terreurorganisatie dat zowel in Irak als in Syri� opereert. Iedereen die niet soennitisch is loopt kans onthoofd te worden door deze groepering. In februari 2014 verbrak Al-Qaeda de banden met IS. IS heeft aan zowel de regering als de andere rebellen groepen de oorlog verklaart.

Landen die de rebellen steunen: NAVO-landen, Jordani�, Libi�, VAE, Saudi-Arabi� en Qatar. De voornaamste reden van die landen om de rebellen te steunen is het bondgenootschap van Syri� met Iran en Rusland, en de steun aan Hezbollah.

Koerden
Volksbeschermingeenheden (YPG) - Koerdisch leger, gesteund door de PKK en de PJAK

Waarom geen NAVO-bombardementen zoals in Libi�?
In de VN veiligheidsraad gebruiken Rusland en China hun veto over een dergelijke resolutie. Ook werd Cameron door het Britse parlement verboden een aanval op Syri� in te zetten.

Deputy FM: Davutoglu’s sneaking into Syria is a violation of international law and countries’ sovereignty

Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad stressed that the sneaking of the Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu into the Syrian territories purportedly to visit the new site of tomb of Suleyman Shah near the Syrian-Turkish borders is a violation of the international law and of countries’ sovereignty.
Last February, Turkish forces, aided by terrorists from the Islamic state in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), have relocated the tomb in a Turkish military operation from Qara Qozaq on the Euphrates to the Syrian village of ” Ashma” which is sited 200 meters from the border with Turkey.
The tomb, which was originally located in an area controlled by ISIS, was spared the destruction done by the terror group to all mosques, churches and tombs in the area, which lends authenticity to charges that link the Turkish authorities to terrorist organizations in Syria.
Mikdad affirmed, in a phone call with al-Mayadeen TV Sunday night, that the Turkish government is completely involved in supporting terrorism and that the relations binding it with the terrorist organizations, on top of them “ISIS” and Jabhat al-Nusra, have become known to the whole world.
The Turkish flagrant transgression and attacks launched by the government of the Justice and Development Party against Syria’s sovereignty have become very clear, and what Davutoglu did is an act that violates the international law and the sovereignty of the countries, Mikdad said.
He indicated that this sneaking reflects the attempt of the government of the Justice and Development Party to cover the losses inflicted upon the terrorist organizations in different parts of Syria, whether in Jisr al-Shughour or in other areas, due to the heroic fighting of the Syrian Arab Army and the rapid collapse of those organizations which are backed by Turkey, adding that this act also proves Turkey’s full involvement in these events.
“A long time ago, we said that the story of Suleyman Shah tomb, which has been used as a pretext by the Turkish government, has become meaningless, and few months ago we sent a letter to the UN Security Council in which we said that if the Turkish government were truly keen on the historic value of the tomb, it would have moved it to the Turkish territories and it wouldn’t have left it in Syria, 200 meters away from the borders” Mikdad added.
Mikdad indicated that these exposed acts of the Turkish government show how much it is involved in violating the countries’ sovereignty and the international law, affirming that it will be held accountable for those acts.
He added ..the support provided by the government of the Justice and Development Party to terrorist organizations is an attempt to undermine Syria’s steadfastness, affirming that the Syrian Arab Army is fighting terrorism and will remain steadfast, and that the Turkish leadership will know that it couldn’t win or achieve any accomplishment on the Syrian territories because Syria is determined to preserve its sovereignty and to counter any interference in its internal affairs.
Mikdad pointed out that the Lebanese Army is working on combating terrorism inside the Lebanese territories to protect the Lebanese people and this is what the Lebanese resistance is doing, asserting that the Syrian Army is performing its role in countering terrorist organizations including Jabhat al-Nusra and others.

Damascus restarts popular train service

A narrow-gauge train has begun operating again in Damascus - in a reminder of better days in the war-torn Syrian capital.

The Rabwah steam train was very popular with city residents, taking them to the countryside at weekends. The service was stopped four years ago.

But with many areas now in rebel hands, the service will be limited to government-held areas of Damascus.

The civil war has killed more than 200,000 people since March 2011.

About 11 million people have been forced to flee their homes.
'Beautiful days'

The return of the train - with its distinctive yellow carriages and leather seats - drew dozens of people, including children, on Friday. Many waved Syrian nationals flags.

The train can hold 100 people, offering an alternative to Damascus traffic jams

"We decided to restart this train to give people hope again and put a smile on people's faces in Damascus," Zuheir Khalil, one of the officials behind the train's relaunch, was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.

Nour, a student, told AFP: It's the train of my childhood... I want to ride it again to remember those beautiful days."

The train can hold 100 people, with tickets costing about $0.25 (�0.17).

Syrian officials say they hope the service will offer a transportation alternative to residents struggling with the capital's traffic jams.
