U.N. envoy says Assad part of solution for easing Syria violence
quote:The U.N. envoy for Syria said on Friday that President Bashar al-Assad must be part of the solution for easing violence in Syria, and he would continue discussions with him after talks in Damascus earlier this week.
The envoy, Staffan de Mistura, is struggling to advance a proposal that would freeze fighting in the northern city of Aleppo - one of the subjects he has said he had discussed with Assad.
In Vienna for talks with Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz, de Mistura said the government still controlled a large part of Syria, and that Assad was "part of the solution for the reduction of the violence", clarifying an earlier remark at a news conference that Assad was part of "the solution".
The United States is among Western powers that say Assad's violent response to what began as a peaceful pro-democracy movement has disqualified him to lead Syria, although Washington is at the same time leading a coalition of countries bombing the Islamist militants who now dominate the rebellion against Assad.
"I am not talking about a final solution," de Mistura told Reuters by phone. "That is something that only the Syrians, if you had asked me, would have to decide upon. The main point was he is part of the solution in reducing violence."
Earlier, speaking at a news conference with Kurz, he had said: "There is a large part of Syria which is under the control of the Syrian government and I will continue having very important discussions with him because he is part also of the solution."
About to enter its fifth year, the Syrian conflict has killed some 200,000 people.

Syrian rebels call on Israel to bomb Hezbollah-Iran-Syria positions

The offensive that got under way this week is focused in an area south of Damascus that is the last notable foothold of the mainstream armed opposition to President Bashar Assad, who has consolidated control over much of western Syria.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which tracks the war, says the push is being spearheaded by Hezbollah, and that government forces and allied militia have made significant progress.
Mendi Safadi, who served as former Likud deputy minister Ayoub Kara’s chief of staff, has independently met with members of the liberal and democratic Syrian opposition who oppose the Islamists and want friendly relations with Israel.
Safadi met a week and a half ago with Syrian rebel leaders in Bulgaria and has traveled in the region, met with activists, and relayed messages from them to the Prime Minister’s Office.
He was responsible for relaying the congratulatory letters from the Syrian opposition to then President-elect Reuven Rivlin.

BEIRUT: Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah Monday rejected calls by rivals for the party to withdraw its forces from Syria, inviting them to join its battle against extremists he said had their sights set on taking over as much territory as possible.
He also threw his weight behind calls for a national counter-terrorism strategy to confront the jihadi threat, predicting more attacks on the horizon.
“To those who call for Hezbollah's withdrawal from Syria, I invite you to come with us to Syria... and I invite you to come with us to Iraq,” Nasrallah said in a televised speech during a ceremony commemorating the Israeli killings of ex-Hezbollah chief Abbas Musawi, and commander Imad Mughniyeh.
Nasrallah said that ISIS’s main target was Saudi Arabia, and Mecca and Medina specifically, noting that its self-declared caliphate would not be complete without enforcing dominance on Islam’s two holiest sites.
“Its eyes are not only on Baghdad. ISIS is also looking towards Mecca and Medina.”
In its fight against ISIS, the Iraqi army is also defending “the thrones” and the “oil” of Gulf states, Nasrallah said.

Ik plaats perongeluk iets wat oud is. Anderen plaatsen expres oude zooi en spammen het forum vol met assad onzin. Dat is het verschil en denk ik niet echt de bedoeling. Overigens is naar een ban vragen niet binnen de regels van het forum, naast het provoceren van anderen. Als je een andere mening hebt, best, maar kom dan met argumenten ipv het tegengeluid persoonlijk aan te vallen waardoor de sfeer hier weer verpest wordt. Dat vind ik ook niet fijn, daarvoor kom ik hier niet. Bij voorbaat dank.quote:
