Meanwhile, Yemeni Information Minister Nadia Sakkaf said Prime Minister Khaled Bahah’s convoy was targeted after leaving the home of President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi. The premier reportedly survived the attack.

Sakkaf further said that Ansarullah forces have taken control of the country’s state-run media.

Commenting on the foreign plots to split the country into various regions, Sayyed Houthi said that they aim at ripping Yemen, calling on the president and the government to challenge them and to end the South's crisis.

"We are ready to face all the measures that the UN Security Council may take," Sayyed Houthi asserted.

Sayyed Houthi called on the Yemenis to support what the public committees are doing through rallies and demonstrations.

The fighters made their way into the palace on Tuesday afternoon.

Yemen’s Shia Houthi movement draws its name from the tribe of its founding leader Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi.

The movement played a key role in the popular revolution that forced former dictator Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down.

Saleh, who ruled Yemen for 33 years, stepped down in February 2012 under a US-backed power transfer deal in return for immunity, after a year of mass street demonstrations demanding his ouster.

Another rally

Meanwhile, the southern Yemen separatists launched rallies in the city of Aden, calling for independence from the central government in the country’s capital, Sana’a.

According to reports, the separatists raised the flag of Southern Yemen over the airport and some of the government buildings in Aden.

Southern Yemen was formerly an independent country which merged with the northern Yemen Republic to form present-day Yemen in 1990.

Latest developments

The demonstration came a day after the Yemeni President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi and the cabinet of Prime Minister Khaled Bahah resigned over pressure from Ansarullah revolutionaries.

Reports say the Yemeni parliament rejected Hadi’s resignation, calling for an emergency session.

The parliament’s move greatly infuriated Ansarullah supporters who surrounded the parliament in Sana’a in an attempt to pressure the legislative body to reconsider its decision.

Some representatives of Ansarullah revolutionaries said the Shia group welcomes the resignations of the Yemeni president and cabinet and may form a "salvation council" with members from different political groups from the country’s north and south.

Source of conflict

Yemen has been the scene of tensions after the Shia fighters arrested Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, Hadi’s chief of staff, at a checkpoint in the western district of Hada on January 17.

The impoverished Arab country is currently grappling with a severe political crisis between the central government and Ansarullah fighters.

In September 2014, Ansarullah revolutionary fighters gained control of Sana’a following a four-day battle with army forces loyal to General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, the half-brother of the country’s former dictator, Ali Abdullah Saleh.

In the same month, Ansarullah fighters and the Yemeni government inked the UN-backed ceasefire deal that called for the withdrawal of the revolutionaries from the capital once a neutral prime minister was picked. The deal has failed to deliver any practical results so far.

Houthi-strijders hebben in de nacht van zaterdag op zondag delen van de derde stad van Jemen veroverd.

De Houthi's, die gelieerd zijn aan Iran, strijden tegen de macht van president Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. Ze veroverden het vliegveld van de stad Taiz, die tussen de hoofdstad Sanaa en de tweede stad Aden in ligt.

Burgeroorlog
Jemen is verwikkeld in een burgeroorlog sinds de Houthi's vorig jaar Sanaa veroverden en president Hadi naar Aden vluchtte. Rebellen stelden in februari een nieuwe regering aan en wilden met een vijfkoppige presidentiële raad Hadi de macht ontnemen.

Het lukt hun echter nog niet echt om de macht af te dwingen, omdat de sjiitische Houthi's een kleine minderheid zijn uit het noorden van Jemen en de Soennieten hun beslissingen niet erkennen.

Ondertussen proberen ook de soennitische terreurgroepen Islamitische Staat (IS) en al-Qaeda grip te krijgen in Jemen. IS pleegde vrijdag aanslagen bij moskeeën in Sanaa. Daarbij kwamen zeker 140 mensen om het leven. De Veiligheidsraad van de Verenigde Naties komt zondag bijeen om te praten over de situatie in het land.

The evacuation involved about 100 Special Operations forces members from the Al Anad airbase, sources in the region familiar with the situation told CNN. The State Department called it a temporary relocation.

Those evacuated, which include Navy SEALs and members of the Army's Delta Force, were the last American forces stationed in the Arab nation, which is home to al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the terrorist group also known as AQAP.

"We ... continue to actively monitor terrorist threats emanating from Yemen and have capabilities postured in the area to address them," State Department Spokesman Jeff Rathke said late Saturday. "As we have in the past, we will take action to disrupt continuing, imminent threats to the United States and our citizens."

The United States closed its embassy in Sanaa last month, after Houthi rebels took over the Yemeni capital. And hundreds of al Qaeda members escaped two Yemeni prisons Thursday and Friday, raising further security questions.

"There is no military solution to Yemen's current crisis," Jeff Rathke said. "We urge the immediate cessation of all unilateral and offensive military actions."

The armor and artillery being moved by Saudi Arabia could be used for offensive or defensive purposes, two U.S. government sources said. Two other U.S. officials said the build-up appeared to be defensive.

One U.S. government source described the size of the Saudi buildup on Yemen's border as "significant" and said the Saudis could be preparing air strikes to defend Hadi if the Houthis attack his refuge in the southern seaport of Aden.

Another U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Washington had acquired intelligence about the Saudi build-up. But there was no immediate word on the precise location near the border or the exact size of the force deployed.

The conflict risks spiraling into a proxy war with Shi'ite Iran backing the Houthis, whose leaders adhere to the Zaydi sect of Shi'ite Islam, and Saudi Arabia and the other regional Sunni Muslim monarchies backing Hadi.

Hadi, who supported Washington's campaign of deadly drone strikes on a powerful Al-Qaida branch based in Yemen, has been holed up in Aden with his loyalist forces since he fled Sanaa in February.

Saudi Arabia faces the risk of the turmoil spilling across its porous 1,800 kilometer (1,100 mile)-long border with Yemen and into its Shi'ite Eastern Province where the kingdom's richest oil deposits lie.

Riyadh hosted top-level talks with Gulf Arab neighbors on Saturday that backed Hadi as Yemen's legitimate president and offered "all efforts" to preserve the country's stability.

Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said on Monday Arab countries would take necessary measures to protect the region against "aggression" by the Houthi movement if a peaceful solution could not be found.

A spokesman for the Saudi embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment on any military movements.

Yemen asked the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday to back military action by "willing countries" to combat Houthi militias, according to a letter from Hadi seen by Reuters.

Hadi wants the 15-member body to adopt a resolution that would authorize "willing countries that wish to help Yemen to provide immediate support for the legitimate authority by all means and measures to protect Yemen and deter the Houthi aggression."

Fighting has spread across Yemen since last September when the Houthis seized Sanaa and advanced into Sunni Muslim areas.

U.S. officials said on Saturday that the United States had evacuated all its remaining personnel in Yemen, including about 100 special operations forces, because of the security situation. The end of a U.S. security presence inside the country has dealt a blow to Washington's ability to monitor and fight Al-Qaida's Yemen affiliate.
