De EU heeft dus een kleine 15 miljoen gefinancierd. Daarbij kan je je afvragen of dat (volledig) aan die terminal te danken is, want dat heeft ook te maken met de pijpleiding die gepland is tussen Litouwen en Polen. Vladimir Putin may not be too concerned about the economic repercussions of his standoff with the West, but the rest of the world should be: The Russian president is taking his country straight down a path that could lead to a regime much worse than his.
Western sanctions and falling oil prices have sharply worsened the prognosis for an economy that was already struggling before Russia sent troops into neighboring Ukraine. The ruble is plummeting, the government is spending billions of dollars to shore up banks, and crucial projects -- such as the planned South Stream natural-gas pipeline to Europe -- are being scrapped or put on hold. This week, a senior official said the country may enter a full-blown recession in the first quarter of next year.
Meanwhile, Putin is encouraging a dangerous strand of nationalism that he may not be able to control. Moscow's meddling in Ukraine has helped make heroes out of some very unsavory figures -- such as Igor Girkin (aka Igor Strelkov), a leader of the pro-Russian rebellion who fancies himself a fighter in a greater war against a morally corrupt West. Some extreme nationalists now view Girkin as a potential challenger to Putin.
The longer Russia's economic malaise lasts, the greater the chances that the opposition to Putin will turn into something more virulent. At that point, unless some faction of Russia's elite managed to remove Putin and hold free and fair elections, revolution would be the most likely route to regime change. The middle-class Muscovites who led the rebellion of 2011 and 2012 failed because too few of them were desperate enough to risk their lives. Next time around, the outcome could be different -- and much worse.

Hij zet zich neer als redelijk alternatief voor Putin, eigenlijk de rol/tactiek die Putin speelde toen hij de macht van Jeltsjin overnam. Geen enge communist die de USSR terugbrengt, maar een groot staatsman. Khodorkovsky heeft een grote troef in handen en dat zijn de sancties die kan hij gemakkelijk van tafel vegen zonder een stap in Oekraine terug te zetten, want die sancties zijn niet zozeer gericht tegen Rusland, maar persoonlijk tegen Putin.quote:

Zoals dat tweede artikel al zegt, Putin heeft zijn hand overspeelt. Zelfs als hij morgen de rest van Oekraine pakt heeft hij weinig van waarde en van nationalisme is nooit iemand rijker geworden. Hij kan beter aan damage control gaan doen. Amerikanen zijn ook niet heel slim in deze, de arabieren en chinezen winnen, want die zetten Iran, Rusland en de Amerikaanse schalie olie industrie onder water.quote:

Grote risico met dit soort economische experimenten is dat je het niet meer in de hand kunt houden. Het is niet te voorspellen hoe laag die olie nog kan gaan. Een panic sell (onverwacht event (Venezuela failliet?) + Obama keurt Keystone XL goed bijv.) en je zit op de $20. De arabieren kunnen tot ongeveer $30 gaan tot ze er zelf 'last' van krijgen. Nog een groot risico, de Amerikanen zullen ook de productie niet omlaag gooien. Olie industrie heeft een grote banengroei opgeleverd die ze politiek gezien (zowel Democraten als Republikeinen) zullen willen beschermen.

Ondertussen komen in Rusland alle economische problemen samen. De Westerse sancties, het slechte economische klimaat en de kelderende olieprijs eisen hun tol. Waarbij het grappig om te zien is dat de markt veel harder lijkt toe te slaan dan de Westerse sancties.

Roebel vandaag van 68 naar 72 per euro, echt een bizarre koersval de laatste weken. Je kan dit inmiddels wel een valutacrisis beginnen noemen. Gaat nog leuk worden met het herfinancieren van die schulden, dankzij de sancties hebben Russische instellingen sowieso al geen toegang tot westerse financiering en dan moeten ze ook nog bijna het dubbele bedrag terugbetalen in roebels...

Beiden de Saudis willen niet dat de VS zijn afhankelijkheid van buitenlandse olie verliest en drukt daarom de shale weg. Echter komt dit de VS voorlopig ook nog goed uit alle landen waar de VS problemen mee heeft komen nu achter de werkelijke macht van de VS. Dit gaat een aantal regeringen de kop kosten.quote:
Putin fanboys over het hele internet worden leip. Met name op sites als ZeroHedge is het feest. Het zijn niet de Amerikanen, maar de Saudi's die Rusland uitknijpen. Overigens doet de VS niets liever dan die Arabieren wapens leveren. Bijna alle legers op dat continent zijn afhankelijk van wapens uit de VS. Dat maakt ook dat de VS er een zegje over heeft want zonder hun ondersteuning blijven die wapens niet lang bruikbaar.
Nee ik denk dat putin zich flink verslikt heeft.
