quote:Iceland releases more sulphur than all of Europe due to eruption
"It's clear that no eruption in the 20th century even comes close to this one. We have to go back to the 19th century to find an eruption that released so much gas. It exceeds all known measurements that we have," says Þorsteinn Jóhannsson at the Icelandic Environmental Agency, when asked about the notable traits of the Holuhraun eruption and the pollution that stems from it.
The eruption has, in only the span of 3 weeks, secured its place in the history books for at least two reasons.
Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson, professor in geophysics, has pointed out that the latest measurements indicate that the lava field is considerably larger than previously believed. The volume of the lava that has emerged from the crack north of the Dyngjujökull glacier is already believed to be at 500 million cubic meters. The surface area is approaching 40 square kilometers. Its thickness is most along the centerline; closest to the craters its 30 meters, but 18-22 meters elsewhere, with the average thickness around 14 meters.
The lava field is among the largest that has formed in Iceland in a long time. Looking back at eruptions in the past 150 years, only the 13-month long eruption from Hekla in 1947-1948 is larger. If the Holuhraun eruption continues with the same force as before, it will reach the same volume as the Hekla eruption in just 2 weeks, writes Magnús Tumi.
But the eruption is also notable for its release of gasses, particularly the amount of sulphurdioxide (SO2). Þorsteinn, who is a geophysicist that specializes in atmosphere quality, says that exact numberrs are unavailable but he believes that the amount of gasses discharged is around 10-20.000 tons a day, though certain measurements show a higher density.
"The gas emissions from Holuhraun are around 10-60 thousand tons of sulphur a day. By comparison the EU nations release 14 thousand tons of sulphur a day, and then we're counting every possible source; industry, energy production, mass transit, heating, etc," says Þorsteinn and adds that in that context the Holuhraun eruption is far from being a minor eruption. Quite the contrary.
The meeting of the Civil Protection's science council yesterday revealed that there are no visible signs of the eruption subsiding in force. The lavafield continues to grow and there is no reduction in volcanic products.
The glacier on the Bárðarbunga caldera has now sunken 27-28 meters since the start of the eruption and the seismicity in the mountain is the same as in recent days.

En de lang verwachte update:quote:12 October 2014 10:00 - from geoscientist on duty
The eruption: Webcameras show no significant changes in the eruption.
Earthquakes: Since 10:00 UTC yesterday (Saturday) two quakes over magnitude 5 occurred in Bárðarbunga. The first one M5.0 at 11:30 yesterday and M5.2 at 08:43 this morning. Both originated in the northern rim of the Bárðarbunga caldera. Additionally, four quakes over magnitude 4 were registered: Yesterday M4.7 at 19:33, M4.1 at 01:36 last night, M4.0 at 03:57 and M4.2 at 06:20. Over 100 quakes have been registered during past 24 hours in the caldera and about 25 in the northern part of the intrusion.
Gas pollution: Northeasterly winds are expected today (Sunday), so the pollution is expected towards south and southwest from the eruption. Polluted area is bounded by Faxaflói in the west and Mýrdalur in the east and is expected to extend north of Hofsjökull. Tomorrow (Monday) wind will be southerly and the pollution will go north.
The Icelandic Met Office provides two-day forecasts on gas dispersion from the eruptive site in Holuhraun. Most reliable are the forecast maps approved by meteorologist on duty. And although still being developed further, an automatic forecast (trial run, see disclaimer) is also available.
11 October 2014 10:00 - from geoscientist on duty
From now on a change is made in these reports from a geoscientist on duty, and they will be published daily at about 10:00 UTC. This may be changed if the eruption changes significantly.
The eruption continues with the same lava flow rate as in past weeks.
Seismicity is similar to previous days:
- There is low activity in the dyke intrusion. Around 20 earthquakes have occurred during the last 24 hours, all within magnitude 1.5 and in the northern part of the intrusion between the eruption site and to the south some kilometers under Dyngjujökull glacier.
- About 80 earthquakes were detected on the caldera rim of Bárðarbunga. The largest earthquakes were at 11:26 and 23:51 yesterday, both of magnitude 4.8. Earthquakes of magnitude 4.7 and 4.5 also occurred and seven between 3.0 and 3.9. Most activity was on the northern caldera rim.
Displacements (no significant changes):
- Minor movements of GPS stations in the area.
- Subsidence of the caldera continuing at similar rate.
Water monitoring: No changes.
Gas forecast (latest forecast 09:32 UTC): Today (Saturday) and tomorrow (Sunday): Northeasterly winds are expected with the possibility of gas pollution south and southwest of the eruption site in an area from Hellisheiði in the west to Hornafjörður in the east.
The Icelandic Met Office provides two-day forecasts on gas dispersion from the eruptive site in Holuhraun. Most reliable are the forecast maps approved by meteorologist on duty. And although still being developed further, an automatic forecast (trial run, see disclaimer) is also available.
10 October 2014 19:00 - from geoscientist on duty
Since midnight, no earthquakes above M5 have been detected in the caldera. The largest occurred during the night (4.7 in size) and half an hour before noon, M4.8. Quite a number of smaller quakes has been detected at the caldera (almost 60 since midnight, the majority at the northern rims). Also in the dike (about 20), from the eruptive site and to about 10 km within the Dyngjujökull margin.
An observation from a surveillance flight with TF-SIF today, revealed great blue mist and gas from the eruptive site to about 3 km height above the crater. From there, it is carried across the South Iceland lowland and across West Iceland as far as could be seen from the aircraft. The pollution seems to be greatest just west of Eyjafjallajökull but is also considerable towards Mýrdalssandur.

During the last 24 hours, about 70 earthquakes have been detected at Bárðarbunga and a dozen in the northern part of the dike. This is somewhat less activity than 24 hours earlier. Two quakes over five in magnitude occurred at the northern caldera rim; an M5.4 at 11:16 yesterday and an M5.0 in the early hours of the morning, at 03:14 today. One earthquake M4.2 occurred later this morning, at 09:25, in a similar location.
Observations of deep thudding sounds were received yesterday while the large earthquake occurred, possibly as a consequence thereof. Scientist went to Askja yesterday but found no signs of a rockfall, which could have caused the noises. Possibly the sounds were from jet aircrafts, passing at the same time.

• Seismic activity in Bardarbunga continues to be strong. 200 earthquakes have been detected in the caldera over the last 48 hours. Just over ten earthquakes were bigger then magnitude M4,0. The largest one was M5,3 tonight at 01:30.
• The GPS station in the centre of Bardarbunga show that the subsidence of the caldera continues with similar rate as it has done over the last few weeks. The total depression in the caldera is now about 42 meters.
• Energy of the geothermal areas in Bardarbunga is now few hundred megawatts and the melting of water is estimated around 2 cubic meters per. second. The water goes into Skjálfandafljót og Jökulsá á Fjöllum. The flow is too small to effect the total water flow of the rivers.
• Around 20 smaller earthquakes are detected in the dyke and at the eruption site in Holuhraun, all around magnitude M1,0 and smaller.
• GPS measurements in the active area show minor changes.

quote:Lava eruption is second largest eruption in Iceland since Laki in 1783-1784
The Holuhraun lavafield has now reached a size of 70 square kilometers and its volume is thought to have exceeded 1 cubic kilometer, or one billion cubic meters. This lava eruption is thus the second largest in Iceland since the Laki eruption in 1783 - 1784.
"We may be in for the long haul, regarding this eruption," says geophysicist Pall Einarsson, professor at the University of Iceland's Institute of Earth Sciences. "During the last decades, we have experienced eruptions that have been forceful at the start, and rather short lived, such as the Hekla and Grimsvotn eruptions," says Einarsson. "But we can also talk about the Heimaey eruption in 1973, which lasted from January until July that year, and the Krafla eruptions, which lasted intermittently for 15 years. So a long-lasting event in Holuhraun is not a remote possibility; the eruption is now in a well established phase and it's difficult to see any signs of changes."
Bardarbunga still shaking
Seismic activity in the Bardarbunga caldera, south of Holuhraun, still continues, with over 60 earthquakes detected today and yesterday. Limited activity has been detected in the dyke intrusion which is thought to feed the Holuhraun eruption. „As long as there is an eruption there, we see lower pressure beneath Bardarbunga,“ says Einarsson. „Should the magma in the instrusion freeze, we will have to see what happens in the caldera.“
Started small - getting big
With constant activity in the main crater in the lavafield, the Holuhraun lavafield has been growing steadily towards the north and east of the source; reaching 70 square kilometres in recent days. The volume is also impressive; with over 1 cubic kilometer of lava erupted, Holuhraun is now the second largest effusive eruption in Iceland since the 18th century. Only the Laki eruption in 1783 - 1784 is bigger, with 15 cubic kilometers of erupted lava.
"The Holuhraun eruption is accordingly the second biggest effusive eruption when it comes to the SO2 pollution," says Einarsson. That pollution is persistent in Iceland, annoying inhabitants in every part of the country, depending on the weather. 40 - 60.000 tonnes of SO2 are released into the air every day in Holuhraun, and pollution levels have sometimes reached dangerous levels, especially in eastern Iceland.
