Dat heeft veel, zo niet alles, te maken met Netflix, dat in Los Gatos zijn hoofdkwartier vestigde. Het bedrijf heeft de reputatie dat het een van de absolute top­betalers in de Valley is, met lonen die nog een stuk hoger liggen dan die van Apple of Google, een boogscheut verderop.

U vliegt een vijftiental Europese journalisten over naar Silicon Valley voor een interviewronde. Maar heeft een zo fel gehypet bedrijf als Netflix eigenlijk nog media-aandacht nodig?
Hastings: "We willen geen hype zijn. We streven ernaar de komende vijftig jaar een belangrijke speler te worden op de Europese entertainmentmarkt. Ik denk dan ook een stuk verder dan onze lancering in pakweg België, Frankrijk of Duitsland.

"Als bedrijf willen we de Belgische, Franse of Duitse maatschappij gewoon ook een stuk beter leren kennen, en dat vraagt nu eenmaal een zekere investering. Als we journalisten hier op het hoofdkwartier uitnodigen, dan leren zij ook ons bedrijf én de bedrijfscultuur kennen."

Netflix is cijfermatig natuurlijk een indrukwekkend succes­verhaal, maar waar willen jullie inhoudelijk voor staan?
"We willen de consument dankzij het internet betere ontspanning brengen. Bijna honderd jaar lang beheerste de tv onze woon­kamers. Dat leverde vaak goede programma's op, bijvoorbeeld op maandag tussen 18 en 18.40 uur en op woensdag om 20 uur.

"Dat gegeven is anno 2014 niet echt meer bij de tijd te noemen, en steekt schril af tegen de flexibiliteit waarmee we de rest van onze mediaconsumptie vandaag kunnen invullen. Op een scherm naar keuze, op een zelf in te vullen tijdstip, zonder reclame als we dat liever zo willen. Terwijl het internet zowat ons hele leven overhoop heeft gehaald, is televisie al bij al een redelijk lineaire ervaring gebleven.

"Ik ben er dan ook van overtuigd dat de tv-uitzendingen zoals we die vandaag nog overal kennen ofwel een stuk beter zullen moeten worden, ofwel gedoemd zijn te verdwijnen. In die zin doet streaming­video met het klassieke tv-aanbod wat pakweg Uber of Airbnb doen met de taxi- of hotelsector: de gevestigde waarden een stevige schop onder de kont geven. Binnen twintig jaar zal de consument al zijn televisieshows, films of documentaires gewoon op het web bekijken."

Televisiezenders die hun aanbod niet gewoon op het net gooien, zijn eraan voor de moeite?
"Dat klopt. Op dat moment houden ze natuurlijk ook op een gewoon, lineair televisiestation te zijn. Dat soort evoluties hebben we in het verleden ook al mee­gemaakt. Hier in de VS zijn giganten als ABC of NBC, die ooit via de antenne ontvangen werden, intussen netjes op de kabel terug te vinden. Nu staan ze voor een vergelijkbare overstap naar het internet, al zal die de consument wel een pak meer vrijheid en keuzemogelijkheden bieden."

Daarnaast zijn er natuurlijk ook gewoon streaming diensten die reclame in de stream gooien zoals Hulu, of de online beschikbare afleveringen op websites van TV zenders.

Initiatieven als Vice News zijn prettig. Daarnaast zijn er ook YouTubers die de achtergronden bij het nieuws geven. Verder is en abonnement op iets als De Correspondent voor mij voldoende.

Ik kijk nog wat spelshows op de reguliere TV. Wel via Uitzending Gemist. Commerciëlen kijk ik al heel lang niet meer naar. Ik denk ook dat die als eerst in het stof gaan bijten, omdat hun verdienmodellen straks niet meer actueel zijn.

Nu 2 afleveringen gekeken en het bevalt erg goed. Zit veel snelheid in de serie. Krijgt een 8.2 op IMDB

Gister de eerste aflevering gezien, maar het valt mij nog niet mee. Ik vond de aflevering ontzettend weinig lijn hebben en ik kan ook niet zeggen dat er maar 1 figuur tussen zat die ook maar iets aan sympathie op wekte. Ik kijk het nog even aan, maar ik denk niet dat dit een serie voor mij gaat worden.
De 8.2 op IMDB lijkt mij sowieso overdreven.

Eigenlijk wilde ik gister aan Twin Peaks beginnen, maar zag dat de pilot anderhalf uur duurt, dus dat moet even wachten. Ben erg benieuwd; als kind kreeg ik wat flarden van de herhalingen mee, en door alle verhalen over de serie heeft het altijd een aantrekkingskracht gehad. Toch ben ik er nooit aan toe gekomen om de serie te kijken.
