Opinion - An unholy war that spells disaster for democracy
Every day Israel's misguided Gaza operation continues, it threatens to overturn and decimate our nation's humane foundation.
On Friday while I was listening to the radio, I was gripped by melancholy that mingled with a tear. An Arab Israeli soldier was being interviewed on his way from the battlefield to his home in the Galilee for a short weekend leave. He sang a song of praise to the Israeli flag, the State of Israel, and the devotion of the Arab soldier to the Israel Defense Forces. He said that his youngest son is also a soldier, but he had not gotten leave over Shabbat since he was mired in the fighting in Gaza. They took away his dear son’s cell phone, and since then his mother and father, who was being interviewed on radio, hadn’t heard a word from him. A bizarre situation. -

JERUSALEM — Israeli leaders have stressed two points in selling their Gaza Strip ground invasion internationally and at home: that they embraced all cease-fire proposals and that troops are targeting tunnels used by Palestinian militants to infiltrate their territory. -

Unlike the previous war in Gaza in 2012, Iran has not declared the same level of support for Hamas in its current fight against Israel. Also unlike the previous war, it has not taken credit for the rockets owned by Hamas and launched on Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa and Gush Dan.
Hamas has made sure to emphasize the locally made arsenal by giving these rockets purely Palestinian names, in light of the absence of the Iranian-made Fajr rocket. -

On July 20, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) released the heavy cost that Israel had paid at the beginning of the land operation in the Gaza Strip: 13 soldiers had been killed and dozens more were wounded. Shortly after, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon held a news conference at the Defense Ministry in Tel Aviv. In the shadow of that bitter announcement, the event was a reminder of the fickleness in attitudes toward the conflict in Gaza, among the Israeli public at large but also among the political leadership. -

Never before has a flare-up in Gaza failed to grab the attention of the Arab world like the current round. Led by Egypt, the majority of the Arab Leagues members have been unwilling to come to Hamas rescue, while much of the Arab street remains preoccupied with the almost Quranic battle between Shiites and Sunnis in Iraq, the endless massacres in Syria and Libyas disintegration. -
