Ukraine: Forces control most of 2 separatist areas

KIEV, Ukraine – A top Ukrainian security official says government troops have cleared more than a dozen towns of armed pro-Russia separatists and now control two-thirds of the eastern regions at the centre of the insurgency.

National security council secretary Andriy Parubiy said Friday that Ukrainian forces are still attacking rebel positions with artillery and planes. He said 17 villages had been secured by government forces since a unilateral cease fire expired Monday.

He said Ukrainian forces now control 23 of 36 local regions within Donetsk and Luhansk provinces, two regions along the Russian border that have declared independence from the government in Kyiv.

The rebels are still fighting back. Rebels shelled the Donetsk airport overnight and an AP reporter said a radar or communications tower there was still burning in the morning.

Sloviansk, Kramatorsk preparing for evacuation

KYIV, July 4 /Ukrinform/.

The headquarters on the temporary evacuation of displaced persons is planning to organize next week the mass transportation of civilian population from Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, as well as other towns in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

The interior minister's adviser, Zorian Shkiriak, said this at a briefing on Friday, a Ukrinform correspondent reported.

Russia threatens Ukraine with direct military aggression - NSDC

KYIV, July 4 /Ukrinform/.

A propaganda campaign on bringing so-called Russian "peacekeepers" to Ukraine, which has recently intensified, can only be regarded as a threat of direct military aggression, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council (NSDC) Andriy Parubiy told reporters in Kyiv on Friday.

Regional admin: battles raging in much of Donetsk region

The administration of Donetsk region on Friday said fighting between government and illegal armed forces was underway currently in the region's city of Kramatorsk, districts of Artemivsk, Maryinka and Yasynuvata, and city and district of Sloviansk.

The administration said in a statement that government forces were currently besieging the town of Mykolayivka near Sloviansk and had destroyed six strongpoints and an ammunition depot of separatists, who were trying to retain their positions.

In the town of Sloviansk, the Karachun mountain was still under fire. In the village of Semenivka near Kramatorsk, an ammunition and weapons depot had been destroyed, and government forces had taken control of part of an arterial motor road linking Kharkiv in Ukraine to Rostov-on-Don in Russia, the statement said.

There were recurrent artillery attacks in Kramatorsk, with civilians having been injured, the public transportation system paralyzed, and disruptions in electricity and natural gas supply in villages on the city outskirts, the administration said.

Gunfire was raging in the town of Siversk and villages of Kirovka and Novoluhanske in Artemivsk district. The local airspace was under the control of the government air force. In the village of Reznikivka, electricity transmission lines, the water supply system and natural gas pipelines had been damaged, and communications were severed, the statement said.

In Shakhtarsk district, battles were in progress in Saur-Mohyla. "Gunfire is making it impossible to restore electricity supply in Dmytrivka and Stepanivka," the administration said.

Ukraine government forces take control of village near Sloviansk - Avakov

Ukrainian government forces took full control of the village of Mykolaivka near Sloviansk in Donetsk region by July 4 evening, taking about 50 militiamen prisoner, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said.

Ukraine calls Ukraine-Russia-OSCE contact group meeting on situation in east on July 5 – Poroshenko, Ashton

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko during a telephone conversation with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton said Ukraine had proposed a venue for the next meeting of the Ukraine-Russia-OSCE contact group to settle the situation in the eastern part of the country.

Police headquarters being moved out of cities of Donetsk, Luhansk

The police headquarters in the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk are being temporarily relocated, being moved out of the cities of Donetsk and Luhansk, the Interior Ministry said on July 4.

The headquarters of Donetsk is moving to Mariupol and that of Luhansk to Svatove. Their personnel are to arrive at the new sites of service by July 7, the ministry says in an address to the two regions' police forces.

Pro-Russian Separatists Reportedly Flee Slavyansk, Releasing Prisoners

Information Resistance, a military analytical group close to the Ukrainian armed forces, reports that at dawn, pro-Russian separatists fled the city of Slavyansk, leaving behind their prisoners.

The Interpreter has translated the story:

Pro-Russian terrorists have left Slavyansk. They have left all the buildings they had previously sezied and all the checkpoints on the road to Kramatorsk. This has been reported by eye-witnesses who were previously in captivity at the Slavyansk Interior Ministry City Department and now have now broken free on their own today at dawn.

According to the eye-witnesses who were being held prisoner in the Slavyansk City Department, they discovered the guards were missing at night, but were afraid of going out in the dark, expecting a provocation. OstroV has covered the story.

People left the Slavyansk Interior Ministry City Department as it grew light, at about 3:40 am. Everything was thrown aside in the offices of the Department -- personal items, guns, even money.

The detainees did not see a single terrorist in Slavyansk. They drove off to Kramatorsk without hindrance. According to them, all the checkpoints are empty on the road to Kramatorsk.

According to another source, in Kramatorsk there has been active movement observed along Kima Street, leading toward Artyomovsk. There are tank treads visible. It is supposed that the terrorists have broken through in that direction.

The eyewitnesses emphasize that most of the separatists are dressed in civilian clothing and traveling in civilian cars.

Col. Strelkov Reportedly Gives Demobilization Order to Pro-Russian Separatists

As separatists reportedly fled their stronghold in Slavyansk at dawn today, news has come out about a reported demobilization order from Col. Igor Strelkov (whose real last name is Girkin). We have not been able to confirm the authenticity of the document.

Leader of Ukrainian Orthodox Church subordinate to the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan) died on July 5 aged 78, the church said in a statement.

Metropolitan Volodymyr has been in grave health for months, and died in a Kyiv hospital, where he was treated for an internal bleeding, Ukrainian media reported. He has been largely absent from the public eye lately, struggling with cancer and Parkinson disease. He had also undergone a heart and a hip surgery, according to UNIAN news agency.

The patriarch led the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) since 1992. An ethnic Ukrainian, he was believed to be a unifying, and pro-Ukrainian figure in the church controlled by Moscow, which allowed its Kyiv branch a certain degree of independence.

His assistant Fr. Drabynko was kept under guard and away from the metropolitan for most of last year, while state-appointed doctors kept his lethal diagnosis secret from him, his assistant maintains.

Patriarch Volodymyr himself complained about a threat to his life in his last letter to Interior Minister Zakharchenko in December 2013.

"I totally do not want to believe that people who have been taking decisions to change this situation are interested in keeping me without the medical assistance that I require," he wrote.
