They wanted to bottle up the quick Chileans and did exactly that--gave them absolutely no room, and the Chileans pretty much did the same to the Dutch. You had to figure that a set piece might by the winning edge for the Dutch and it proved so--with Robben (and RVP) they are dangerous on the counter.

Van Gaal is doing wonders with an above average Dutch team mostly dependent on Van Persie and Robben. Everyone thought it's the Dutch who would probably finish behind Spain and Chile but not only they are going to next round winning all games but also they have already scored more goals than Spain did in the whole WC last time! Robben has been the best player in this World Cup so far and Depay is going to be some player in the future. Can't help but get excited about Van Gaal at United.

Those that said Van Gaal's best days were behind him after he was appointed Utd manager must feel pretty daft right now.

Plucky performance by The Netherlands, in the end they proved to be a touch above the Chileans.
Looking good for the knockout stages.

On paper this is one of the weaker Dutch sides I've seen at a World Cup. In reality they're a superbly drilled outfit, plenty of goal threat, and are capable of going far in this tournament.

Probably didn't live up to expectations, but a very intriguing match. Everyone underestimated the Netherlands before the start of the tournament, including myself. Their form shouldn't be too much of a surprise considering how imperious they were in qualification. The injury to Strootman is probably a blessing in disguise, allowing the Dutch to play a system that suits their squad better.
Chile will be disappointed to not avoid Brazil but I have a hunch they'll win against the seleção.
I haven't been on here in a while, so it's good to be back!

A fair result in the end. Yes, Chile should have had one penalty, but their incessant diving, griping did them in. The Gambian referee and his team were largely excellent.
van Gaal again the master of brave substitutions. Fer of that former Premier League powerhouse Norwich? Genius. Memphis? Superb super-sub.
Man U fans are in for a treat next season and few players will look forward to it more than Januzaj, Wilson, Kane, Lawrence and Zaha. van Gaal's kind of players.

The dutch mean business. They could win this.

Chile were pathetic, if that had been the ref from the Croatia v Brazil game they might have had fifteen penalties.
