De westerse Oekranse bevolking wil het liefst zo veel mogelijk nationalistisch nieuws waarbij Oekrane succesvol naar voren komen ten nadele van de Russen. In het oosten wonen echter veel Russischgezinden en die willen graag horen dat Oekrane een faalstaat is geworden en alles wat met Rusland te maken heeft beter is.

Daar gaat het dus mis. Mensen willen meerdere dingen. Ze willen ook een goede toekomst voor zichzelf en hun kinderen. Gaan hangen in de sentimenten van een wij -zij tegenstelling (wij zijn goed en zij zijn slecht; wij zijn bezig met een kosmische strijd tussen goed en kwaad). Dat is kinderspel. Dan moet je ook niet klagen als er een granaat ontploft en je vriendin twee benen kwijt is. Dat hoort erbij als je de sentimenten van machtsspel wilt kunnen uitleven. Dit is geen simpel nationalisme. Het lijkt erop dat er een fundamenteel verschil in inzicht is tussen het westen en Rusland, als het gaat om wat er rond 1990 is gebeurd. Vanuit "ons" perspectief betekende het de definitieve overwinning van het westerse maatschappelijke model, dat naar het hele Oostblok inclusief Rusland uitgerold zou moeten worden. Het lijkt erop dat de Russen een poosje ook diezelfde weg zijn ingeslagen, bijvoorbeeld in de vorm van deelname aan het Europees Verdrag voor de Rechten van de Mens sinds 1996. Maar tegenwoordig onder Poetin niet meer. Het lijkt erop dat zij een grootmacht met een invloedssfeer willen zijn, geen gewoon land zoals alle anderen en zker geen arm land dat de boot van modernisering naar westers voorbeeld grotendeels gemist lijkt te hebben (zoals veel Oekraners hun land wel lijken te zien).
En dus is het al jaren geen vriendschappelijke relatie maar een constant over-en-weer aftasten van machtsverhoudingen binnen de kaders van wat verdragsrechtelijk is toegestaan. Zo ging het met alle incidenten tijdens het Nederland-Ruslandjaar en zo gaat het nu in de Oekrane-crisis ook weer. Dat is in die zin dus ook een proxy-conflict.

The survey was conducted by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation and the Razumkov Center from May 14 to May 18. A total of 2,011 respondents were interviewed.

Alleen is er heel wat af te dingen op 1, 2 & 3 (net als in de VS) en past 4 alleen bij een supermacht (wat Rusland niet meer is).
De Rusland heeft zich nog niet neergelegd bij het verlies van hun positie van supermacht. Het probeert met de Euraziatische Unie opnieuw om het centrum van een imperium te worden. Dat kun je imperialisme en/of nationalisme noemen. Want Russen willen in de Eurarische Unie wel de baas zijn.
De bevolking van Rusland staat achter de annexatie van de Krim. Dat berust nationalistische sentimenten, net zoals hun idee van bescherming van etnische Russen in andere landen. Maar Rusland heeft vazalstaten nodig om een rol als supermacht te kunnen waarmaken. Die vazalstaten kun je niet paaien met Russisch nationalisme, dus noemen ze het anders. De nieuwe omarming van het orthodox christelijk geloof en Slavische broedervolkeren spelen daarin een rol.
De VS is ook geen gewoon land en wij vallen onder de invloedssfeer van de VS. Als wij Texel verkopen aan China, zodat zij daar een legerbasis kunnen aanleggen, dan mag dat niet. De EU is dus een deel van de invloedssfeer van de VS. Door de EU / NAVO verder uit te breiden, vergroot de VS hun invloedssfeer. Dat is belangrijk als de VS een supermacht wil blijven (want zij zijn ook maar 5% van de wereldbevolking; China heeft een veel grotere bevolking).
In Rusland zijn ze niet gek. Zij begrijpen dat het verhaal van de VS (democracy, rule of law, civil society, free markets, human rights) een ideologisch verhaal is, dat het machtsstreven van de VS verhuld. Noam Chomsky legt al decennia lang overtuigend uit dat de VS een imperialistische agenda heeft.
Dat is een tweede reden waarom Rusland niet meer meespeelt met het westerse maatschappelijke model. Dit gaat gewone burgers in Het Westen ook aan. Net zoals Rusland het gevoel heeft dat de ideologie een schaamlap is voor een stammenstrijd, zo heeft de burger in de VS het gevoel dat de ideologie een schaamlap is voor een klassenstrijd.
Al dit machtsstreven is schadelijk voor veel mensen. Het formele ideologische model is beter dan het machtsspel dat eronder schuilgaat. Daarom vind ik de strijd om invloed tussen twee machtsblokken onacceptabel (net zoals een klassenstrijd). In het formele ideologische model speelt de burger de hoofdrol, maar dan moeten burgers wel leren deze handschoen op te pakken. Volgens mij staat dit nog steeds in de kinderschoenen. Sinds wanneer hebben wij stemrecht? Sinds wanneer volgen kinderen van gewone mensen hogere opleidingen? Zou het kunnen dat we zelf ook nog veel te leren hebben? Ook onze samenleving maakt steeds een corrupte indruk.

Precies. Onze democratie en persvrijheid zijn dus ook alleen maar zo 'vrij' zolang bij ons een meerderheid zich vrijwillig binnen die kaders blijft bewegen. Dat is trouwens al heel lang zo, het hele herstel van de Nederlandse soevereiniteit na de Franse overheersing lag bijvoorbeeld ook al bij de grootmachten van destijds, die een bepaalde rol voor Nederland (nl. als neutrale bufferstaat) in gedachten hadden.quote:

Dat is nog geen waarde-oordeel. Wat ik er zelf over denk, is dat het goed is om je te beseffen dat de wereld zo werkt en je gegeven die situatie maar het beste ervan moet proberen te maken.

Maar alleen als je daarin niet doorslaat. Want in Rusland doen mensen dat natuurlijk ook. En in bananen republieken ook. Wat maakt nu het verschil tussen beter functionerende landen en slechter functionerende landen? Volgens mij, dat je het individuele streven naar voordeel beperkt tot het redelijke.
Zodra het een excuus Truus wordt voor het meelopen in een corrupt systeem, zouden mensen daar weerstand tegen moeten bieden (dat is het idee van 'civil society'). Dat betekent dat mensen niet te snel mee moeten gaan in argumenten die wijzen op je individuele voordeel, ten koste van wat redelijk is. Een besef van algemeen belang is noodzakelijk.
Edit: En daarvoor is een zekere mata van objectiviteit noodzakelijk.

The EU Commission says South Stream as it stands does not comply with EU competition law because it offers no access to third parties. The EU also objects to the fact that Gazprom will control both the pipeline itself and the gas supply.
The pipeline will stretch across Russia, under the Black Sea and then through Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary and Slovenia to Austria.
Gazprom's partners for the offshore part of the project are Italy's ENI, Germany's Wintershall Holding and France's EDF.

The international airport of Ukraine’s eastern industrial city of Donetsk has been closed till October 31, a source in Ukraine’s state-run air traffic control authority Ukraerorukh told ITAR-TASS on Friday.
"The airport will stay closed for technical reasons till October 31,” the source said, quoting a special message of several hours ago. The official did not specify what the technical reasons were. The message he was referring to contained no hints on that score either.
No new information about the airgate’s further operation has appeared on the airport’s official website yet. On its homepage one can find only a statement of June 3, when Ukraine’s state aviation service closed down the airport till June 30.
Earlier, Ukraerorukh told ITAR-TASS that “for technical reasons” the international airport of another eastern city, Lugansk, has been closed till September 10. The official website says current repairs of lighting and radio navigation equipment, the runway and power supply cables are in progress.
All passenger flights in the airspace over the Donetsk and Lugansk regions are prohibited by the Ukrainian aviation authorities.

The ‘decree’ also extends to online resources, including individual bloggers, and covers distributors of print media.
“I condemn the steps forcing media outlets to register and to report in favor of the illegal armed groups,” Mijatovic said. “Censored reporting under the threat of harassment and intimidation gravely violates freedom of the media and is unacceptable.”

The multi-way automobile border crossing point Gukovo (Chervonopartizansk on the side of Ukraine) was damaged as a result.
“Facts of ammunition rounds striking Russian territory are still registered. Today one round hit the Gukovo point, one exploded in the inhabited locality of Vasetsky and another one in the Shakhta-24 locality,” Malayev said.
He added that no civilians or border-crossing point officials were injured.

Russia said on Saturday that three shells fired by Ukrainian troops have hit a customs post and residential areas inside its territory, causing damage but no injuries.
"In the course of clashes on Ukrainian territory, the Ukrainian military fired shells which ended up on Russian territory," a spokesman for the border service in the Rostov region, Vasily Malayev, told Russian agencies.

Rosneft and BP agreement
Russian oil major Rosneft and BP Oil International have signed an agreement on Friday, implying that Rosneft will supply 12 million tonnes of oil products to BP within the next five years. The supplies may start in July 2014.
Under the contract, BP must make an advanced payment standing at least at $1.5 billion. “The pre-payment amounted to about $2 billion at the moment of the agreement signing. Eight leading world banks took part in the deal. The pre-payment will rise because several other banks were interested in the deal as well,” a Rosneft representative said.
Oil products may be replaced for crude on demand under the agreement.
As World Leaders Discuss Russian Sanctions, BP and Rosneft Sign $2 Billion Deal
While Europe and the United States debate whether or not to further sanctions into the economic realm, the oil industry is taking a very strict "business as usual" approach. Rex Tillerson traveled to Moscow to speak on a World Petroleum Congress panel aside Rosneft's Igor Sechin (who is sanctioned) earlier this month, regardless of government officials opposing the trip. Business lobbies in the U.S. have also said they would oppose economic sanctions against Russia, worried they would affect American jobs and revenue streams.
The deal with B.P. is instrumental not only because of its size, 12 million tons for around $2 billion, but because of its longevity. Rosneft will supply B.P. with oil and oil products over the next five years. What is more, Rosneft has demanded prepayment. The prepaid amount will be at least $1.5 billion, the majority of the total deal. In the event of economic sanctions, $1.5 billion dollars essentially disappear. B.P. will throw around all of the weight it has in Washington to prevent this from happening.
Rosneft has signed some impressive deals worldwide recently, especially in the regions looking to sanction their homeland. Rosneft is pursuing a multi billion dollar drilling deal with Cuba's national oil company, they have started drilling on a $900 billion Arctic deal with Exxon and now, they have signed a long term deal with B.P.

Stringer Reported Captured Released, Then Shown on Video in Captivity
Vladimir Alexandrovich, a 16-year-old stringer for ANNA news service, held in captivity for two days by unknown persons, was released Friday, ANNA reported.
"Streamer Vlad," as he was known was famous in the area for filming battle scenes, which he gave to the regional pro-separatist ANNA news service.
Captor: All of those who are tearing my country into pieces, all those who have seized my native town Donetsk, all of those who have raised the flag of Russia, DPR [Donetsk People's Republic] and other freaks will be punished, as is happening here with this monster.
