Onzin. Ik heb geen idee hoeveel niet dodelijke dingen bijdragen aan de kosten van een leger, maar van brandstofkosten tot aan de maag van de soldaat kan het denk ik aardig oplopen. Stel dat het slechts 30% is en je kan dat geld voortaan uitgeven aan meer wapentuig en soldaten dan is dat een behoorlijke boost. Ook niet dodelijke dingen zoals nachtvisie apparatuur kunnen je een behoorlijk voordeel geven.quote:

The bodies of six fighters were laid in coffins waiting to be loaded on to the huge articulated refrigerator lorry that would carry them to the Russian border when The Daily Telegraph was granted access to the facility on Thursday.
Workers painted a huge red cross and the number "200" – Soviet-era military code for dead bodies in transit – on the roof and sides of the lorry, in a bid to ward off attacks by Ukrainian aircraft.
The convoy, escorted by police, planned to carry the bodies to Rostov-on-Don, where they would be dispatched to families across Russia, rebel spokesmen organising the convoy said.
Rebel leaders say the Russian fighters were all volunteers, not members of the regular Russian armed forces. They reiterated the hope that President Vladimir Putin would finally send troops to assist them.
The open admission of the presence of foreign fighters marks a remarkable change of tune from the separatist leadership, which previously maintained that its forces were entirely made up of locals.

Dit hele zaakje stinkt. Die oude kliek die is verjaagd, waren schoften, maar de nieuwe kliek is waarschijnlijk van hetzelfde kaliber. Een groot deel van de Oekraiense bevolking is etnisch-Russisch en deze hele zaak zou dus door het Westen zeer voorzichtig aangepakt moeten worden. Men zal met de Russen rond de tafel moeten om dit hele verhaal te kunnen oplossen. Oekraine zal de Krim en een aantal andere gebeden op moeten geven, om als Oekraine te kunnen doorgaan.

Kalashnikovs zijn geen slechte wapens en veel militairen uit oostblok landen die vanwege de navo moesten overschakelen op Amerikaanse zooi zijn niet blij.quote:

Met een kalashnikov zelf is idd niets mis, maar het zijn niet de nieuwste modellen die ze hebben, net zoals de artillerie, etc. Het spul wat aan de andere kant de grens overkomt is stukken geavanceerder (hittezoekende raketten etc.)quote:

About 300 Ukrainian mercenaries who fought in Syria on the opposition side against Bashar Assad returned to Ukraine in March-April and are now participating in the punitive operation of Ukrainian government forces in the southeast of Ukraine, according to a source in the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.
After returning from Syria, they joined the battalion of Right Sector radicals participating in the government forces' punitive operation against residents in southeastern regions of the country. Most of the mercenaries are from western regions of Ukraine. Among them are snipers and soldiers of Special Forces known for their cruelty. They fought in more than one "hotspot", including in the North Caucasus where they participated in fighting against federal forces.

Volgens Kerry komen onder anderen Tsjetsjenen via Rusland Oekrane binnen. Hij heeft Moskou opgeroepen alle steun aan separatisten te stoppen. Ook wil Kerry dat Rusland op zijn beurt de separatisten oproept hun wapens in te leveren.
Tsjetsjenen
Veel Russen nemen deel aan de strijd tegen het Oekraense leger, zegt NOS-correspondent Gert-Jan Dennekamp. "Je ziet dat hun aandeel steeds zichtbaarder wordt." De eenheid die de strijd rond het vliegveld van Donetsk heeft geleverd, wordt geleid door Tsjetsjenen uit Rusland. "Daar maakt niemand meer een geheim van in deze regio."
Bij de slag om het vliegveld kwamen tientallen separatisten om. "Vandaag is een vrachtwagen met 33 lichamen naar de nabestaanden in Rusland vertrokken", aldus Dennekamp.
Niet meer gepraat
Het conflict in het oosten van de Oekrane is afgelopen week verhard. Volgens Dennekamp wordt er niet meer gepraat tussen de autoriteiten en de separatisten. Kerry heeft Rusland opgeroepen toenadering te zoeken tot de nieuwe president Porosjenko.
Verder sprak Kerry met Lavrov over Syri. Kerry uitte zijn bezorgdheid over het feit dat Syri de laatste deadline voor de vernietiging van al zijn chemische wapens niet gaat halen. Ook sprak hij over de aanval op een konvooi van OPCW-inspecteurs en VN-medewerkers deze week. Rusland is een belangrijke bondgenoot van het regime van president Assad.

"We weten waar ze zijn en ze maken het goed", aldus Ponomarjov.
De vier OVSE'ers die dagenlang zijn vastgehouden komen uit Denemarken, Estland, Turkije en Zwitserland. De waarnemersmissie is sinds maart actief in Oekrane. Het gaat om 280 mensen uit 41 landen. Woensdag werd onder anderen een Nederlandse waarnemer urenlang vermist in Oost-Oekrane.
Offensief
De Oekraense strijdkrachten zetten onderwijl het offensief door tegen opstandelingen. "De ons gegeven taak is vrede en orde in de regio te brengen", verklaarde minister van Defensie Michailo Koval vrijdag. De minister herhaalde beschuldigingen aan het Russische adres dat er "speciale operaties" worden uitgevoerd in het oosten van Oekrane.
De uitspraken komen een dag na het neerhalen van een Oekraense helikopter. Daarbij kwamen veertien militairen, onder wie een generaal, om het leven. Volgens Kiev is het toestel met een Russische raket uit de lucht geschoten.
Rusland heeft ondertussen wel een groot deel van zijn troepen uit het grensgebied met Oekrane weggehaald, stelt het Amerikaanse ministerie van Defensie. Ongeveer zeven bataljons zijn er nog, bij elkaar enkele duizenden militairen, aldus een woordvoerder.

The "Donbas" special operations battalion of Ukraine's National Guard is officially mobilizing men aged 18 to 55 years old, a battalion spokesman told reporters.
"It (the "Donbas" battalion) will specialize in intelligence, counter-sabotage and assault operations, as well as will defend the state borders from sabotage and terrorist groups," the battalion said in a press release.
"Donbas" is expected to become an experimental battalion with minimal recruitment requirements due to the rapid pace of its formation.
A program has already been developed that will help train the battalion's soldiers rapidly and effectively, with a focus on the specifics of their tasks.
The main criteria for selecting candidates to serve in this battalion include their patriotism, readiness to fight and, if necessary, "die for their Motherland", a document confirming that such people are physically and mentally fit for military service, and their age between 18 and 55 years old.
The mobilization campaign has been stepped up in order to be able to recruit as many volunteers to the battalion as possible.

Another team of monitors of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe has been detained in eastern Ukraine, the Vienna-based OSCE said on Friday.
The OSCE said the team of four international monitors and a Ukrainian language assistant was stopped in the town of Severodonetsk, 100 km (60 miles) north of Luhansk by armed men. It said it had lost contact with the team at around 7 p.m. (1600 GMT) on Thursday.
The detained team from the OSCE's special monitoring mission is in addition to another team still missing in the east of the country, which was last heard from on the evening of May 26, the OSCE said. A rebel leader had said on Thursday that team was likely to be released soon.
The OSCE has sent the so-called special monitors to observe compliance with an international accord for de-escalating a crisis in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatists have seized control of strategic points in several towns.
There are currently 248 international members of the OSCE's special monitoring mission in Ukraine, with another 23 due to be deployed on Friday and a target of 300 by the end of June, an OSCE spokesman said.
The OSCE - Europe's security watchdog, of which both Russia and Ukraine are members - also has teams of military observers in Ukraine led by the German Defence Ministry, and election observers who monitored last weekend's presidential vote.

Oekrane heeft zich volgens Rusland niet gehouden aan afspraken over betalingen voor gasleveringen. Volgens Rusland was er een deadline afgesproken, en heeft Oekrane die gemist.
De Russische minister Novak van Energie zei tegen persbureau Interfax dat Kiev voor vandaag 2 miljard dollar, bijna 1,5 miljard euro, had moeten betalen aan het Russische energiebedrijf Gazprom. Voor 7 juni moet Kiev volgens Novak nog eens 500 miljoen dollar betalen.
De betalingen zijn volgens Rusland een voorwaarde voor verdere onderhandelingen tussen de landen. Novak is in Berlijn om met Oekrane en de Europese Unie te praten over de Russische gasleveringen en de Oekraense schulden.

Ze volgen de ontwikkelingen door allerlei bronnen te gebruiken. Dat beperkt de ruimte waarbinnen overheden en andere partijen de beeldvorming kunnen manipuleren. Dat is een goede zaak.

The big drawback is that Mr Poroshenko, a confectionery billionaire, is himself an oligarch, as well as being a veteran of the self-serving political struggles that have left Ukraine in this mess. He was a minister both under Mr Yanukovych and in the government that followed the Orange revolution of 2004, which collapsed amid feuds in which Mr Poroshenko played a part. The legacy of this wasted, venal decade is a deeply rotten state: crooked police, suborned courts, woeful public services and monopolised industries.
Much more than regional differences, it was this pervasive corruption that brought Ukraine to the brink of disintegration. Among other reforms, that will mean liberalising the economy, cleaning up politics and wholesale sackings of police, prosecutors, tax officials and the judiciary. It will, in short, mean dismantling the system in which the likes of Mr Poroshenko have flourished.
