The gang uploaded the video of their callous actions to YouTube in a chilling attempt to intimidate anyone not seen as loyal to the new Ukraine government.

The clip shows two masked activists threatening the younger man, slapping him and demanding that he obey the true leaders of the country.

When he refuses, the activists slap him again, then grab him by the legs and throw him off the bridge.

The video clip has not resulted in any police action - despite being viewed by over half a million people.

The river was not searched, and there was no indication on whether the man survived.

The only clue was footage showing he had landed in the water and was last seen struggling to stay afloat.

A police spokesman asked for a statement said: "We have not had any reports of anyone missing or being attacked, this might just be more pro-Russian propaganda."

Donetsk, an industrial city officially in Ukraine on the Kalmius River where the attack happened, is largely filled with ethnic Russians.

Large numbers of anti-government separatists have been staging angry protests in the area.

But there have now been growing reports of masked thugs from the pro-government side trawling the streets, claiming to be acting as agents of the Ukrainian nationalist political party.

"We have a lot of children, you know. We have been living here for years," said Pyotr Povolsky. "They say they are going to evict the Roma from here. And we don't sleep in our houses, because we are afraid someone will come, you know. We don't go to the city because of this war here, you see."
