Klopt...als neutraal nieuwsfeit ook zeer noemenswaardig. Wat ik er in lees is dat de interim regering in Kiev momenteel gecoached wordt door het Westen en dan men Kievn duidelijk probeert te maken dat het aanpakken van politiek onfrisse elementen beter is voor de geloofwaardigheid op de lange termijn van het nieuwe regime in Kiev. Yanukovych recants on Crimea
Ukraine's ousted president, Viktor Yanukovych, said Wednesday that he was "wrong" to invite Russian troops into Crimea, and vowed to try to persuade Russia to return the Black Sea peninsula.
In his first interview since fleeing to Russia in February, Yanukovych said he hopes to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin to return the region he annexed in March.
Yanukovych, speaking to The Associated Press and Russia's state NTV television, called Russia's annexation of Crimea "a tragedy."
He fled Ukraine in February after three months of protests against his rule.

That will provide only mild relief in the short term, however. Even if gas can be redirected from EU nations in technically complicated maneuvers to meet immediate needs, it would only amount to relatively small quantities.

Even if the EU has no reasonable alternative to Russian gas in the short term, Moscow wouldn’t have a good alternative market for its gas either.

Of die beloften nagekomen worden weet ik niet, maar de boodschap die de regering wilde geven was dat de toestand van Tataren die illegaal land hadden ingenomen zou geregulariseerd worden. Dat de woordvoerder daar één uitzondering aan toevoegde was dom, want daar focuste de buitenlandse media op.

Paar dagen geleden een hoop heisa over het feit dat Rusland een bataljon terug zou trekken. Ga je zoeken hoe groot een bataljon is, blijken dat 500 man te zijn en wat van die APC's... Niet heel veel dus als je ziet dat de conservatieve schattingen de aantallen Russen aan de grens op 40 a 50 duizend schat. Ten aanzien van de NAVO in de Ukraïne, wat ik begrepen heb zijn ze gastheer deze zomer voor wargames met NAVO troepen op land. Polen roept om NAVO grondtroepen (ze willen twee brigades op hun grondgebied, dat zijn wel serieuze aantallen). De rest wil daar niet aan omdat ze bang zijn dat dat provoceert.
Gister ging het op den twittert over het feit dat de Russen een 'vredesoperatie' zouden uitrollen, wat een eufemisme is voor een inval. Zoals gezegd, ik zie dat voor juni nog wel gebeuren.

Om welk gebied het gaat weet ik niet want daarna heb ik er niets meer over gelezen.
Detour road is waarschijnlijk de weg die vanuit het klaverblad noordelijk van de stad (44°59'22.22" N 34°06'11.77" E) richting westen vertrekt en dan naar het zuiden afbuigt. Stopt abrupt in een rond punt (44°56'11.60" N 34°02'01.97" E)
Valt me weinig op rond die weg. Google maps geeft straatnamen en huisnummers als je ver genoeg inzoomt, misschien dat een gebied met gebouwen zonder straatnamen duidt op illegale aanbouw, don't know.

Rusland heeft 40.000 militairen bij de grens met Oekraïne, zegt de opperbevelhebber van de NAVO, de Amerikaanse generaal Philip Breedlove. Hij zei in een interview met Jan Eikelboom van Nieuwsuur dat de Russische troepen in staat zijn om op land en op zee binnen twaalf uur aan te vallen.
Breedlove zei al eerder dat Rusland zich aan het voorbereiden was op een militaire invasie onder de dekmantel van een militaire oefening. Hij sprak toen van een "zeer omvangrijke troepenmacht".
Geen beelden
Het is onduidelijk of die troepen daadwerkelijk bij de Oekraïense grens staan. Volgens correspondent David Jan Godfroid zijn er geen beelden van en hebben journalisten in het grensgebied ook geen troepen gezien. "Zoveel militairen verstop je niet zomaar. Er is artillerie nodig, tanks, transportvoertuigen. Dat heeft bij elkaar de omvang van een kleine stad."
Oud-secretaris-generaal van de NAVO Jaap de Hoop Scheffer zei in Nieuwsuur dat hij niet twijfelt aan de uitspraken van Breedlove. Hij noemt het wel merkwaardig dat niemand de troepen nog heeft gezien, maar ziet geen reden om te twijfelen aan de NAVO-opperbevelhebber. "Zonder tegenbericht ga ik ervan uit dat de informatie correct is."

Nee ze wisten het wel...maar ze wilden het niet zien. Info van het verzet werd afgedaan als een vergissing en de chief intelligence officer (die ook Urquhart heette, maar geen familie was en later Secretaris-Generaal van de VN is geworden) werd met ziekteverlof gestuurd toen hij maar bleef zwaaien met die paar foto's waar Duitse tanks op stonden. Rusland sluit 'oil-for-goods' deal met Iran, Amerika met Saudi-Arabië om de olieprijs onder druk te zetten. Tegelijkertijd verplaatst de NAVO meer units (vliegtuigen, schepen) naar de zwarte zee en de Baltische staten en gaan nu ook de Engelsen meedoen met oefeningen in Oost Europa.

Verder is er echt nauwelijks sprake van een serieuze inzet van westerse militaire middelen. Eén Amerikaans schip in de Zwarte Zee en een paar F16's boven de Baltische staten dat stelt allemaal bar weinig voor.
Wat je in de gaten moet houden is de spillover op andere dossiers waarbij we de Russen nodig hebben: Iran en het vervoer van militair materiaal uit Afghanistan via Russisch grondgebied.

In early March, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden insisted that the U.S. and Russia’s space partnership was not being strained over tensions in Ukraine.
"Right now, everything is normal in our relationship with the Russians," Bolden said at the time. "I think people lose track of the fact that we have occupied the International Space Station now for 13 consecutive years uninterrupted, and that has been through multiple international crises."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Ukrainian industrialist Dmitry Firtash, a member of India's parliament and four others were indicted by a U.S. grand jury for their suspected role in an international corruption scheme, the U.S. Justice Department said on Wednesday.
The indictment, which was returned under seal in June 2013, was made public on Wednesday, a few weeks after prosecutors said they planned to ask Austria to extradite Firtash.
Firtash, who is one of Ukraine's most influential oligarchs, Indian lawmaker K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao, and the other defendants participated in a scheme to bribe Indian government officials in order to gain access to minerals used to make titanium-based products, prosecutors said.
The scheme allegedly involved $18 million in bribes to secure licenses in the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, for a project expected to generate $500 million in annual sales, the U.S. government said.
U.S. prosecutors said they have jurisdiction over the case because the defendants used U.S. financial institutions to transfer the bribes and because the defendants had planned to sell the titanium products to an unnamed American company based in Chicago.
Some of the defendants were also charged with violating the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which bars bribes to officials of foreign governments in exchange for business.
"Fighting global corruption is part of the fabric of the Department of Justice," the acting head of the Justice Department's criminal division, David O'Neil, said in a statement.
Firtash, whose first name is also spelled "Dmytro," was arrested in Vienna last month and was released from custody after posting 125 million euros ($172.10 million) bail.
In a statement, an official of Firtash's Group DF company said there is no truth to the accusations.
"It is not a coincidence that the U.S. is trying to extradite our chairman at the moment when Mr. Firtash is needed for the economic and political reconstruction of Ukraine," Group DF deputy chairman Robert Shetler-Jones said.
The detention of Firtash, whose business concerns in gas trading and chemicals thrived under Ukraine's ousted president Viktor Yanukovich, has coincided with a sharp escalation in the country's political crisis that pits the West against Russia.
The allegations at the heart of the Justice Department's case date back to 2006, when a Group DF unit set up a joint venture with the state government of Andhra Pradesh to mine several minerals, according to the indictment.
Firtash allegedly met with Indian officials including the then chief minister of the state, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and his advisor Rao, the Indian official who is charged in the case, in order to discuss the project and authorized the bribes.
According to prosecutors, Firtash then directed his employees to create documents to cover up the money trail.
Rao solicited bribes for himself and others in return for approving licenses for the project, prosecutors said.
A representative of the Indian embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Justice Department said it is seeking Firtash to forfeit his interests in Group DF Limited and its assets.

"The police officers of this company were trained for special operations including the killing of people. They were overseen by the presidential administration," Interfax Ukraine newswire quoted Makhnitsky as saying.
In late February the Interior Ministry disbanded the Berkut, whose name means golden eagle and signifies a predator capable of swooping quickly onto its prey.
Later on Thursday a special commission is due to hear the results of a preliminary investigation into the deaths at the 'Maidan' protests.

The ousted Kremlin-backed leader, who fled to Russia in February, deployed sharpshooters on buildings in central Kiev and ordered them to open fire on protesters, State Security Service head Valentyn Nalyvaychenko told reporters today in Ukraine’s capital. Russia began sending special forces personnel to the country in December and shipped explosives there the next month, he said. Yanukovych has denied involvement in the sniper deaths and Russia dismissed the accusations today.
February’s crackdown on protesters “was directly managed by ex-President Yanukovych,” Nalyvaychenko said. “We have grounds to think Russian groups located at one of Ukraine’s state security training centers participated in the planning and implementation of the so-called anti-terrorist operation.”
Nalyvaychenko’s remarks heighten tensions between Russia and Ukraine after President Vladimir Putin annexed the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea and sparked the worst standoff with the U.S. and Europe in more than two decades. Nog geen maand na de invase en annexatie van de Krim door Rusland, zijn er westerse hulppakketten op de zwarte markt te vinden. Oekraïne kreeg veel hulp in de vorm van een lening van een miljard dollar én 300.000 dollar aan Amerikaanse voedselpakketten. Helaas lijken die hun eindbestemming niet te bereiken, kwam Motherboard op het spoor.
De kant-en-klare maaltijden arriveerden dit weekend in Kiev, maar nog voor de laatste ladingen daar zijn, staan er al pakketten te pronken op zoekertjessites. De overheden kunnen niet aantonen hoe de verkopers nu net hun handen kunnen leggen op de voedselpakketten. Wellicht worden ze gestolen uit de militaire hangars waar de hulppakketten liggen te wachten vooraleer ze rondgedeeld worden.
De voedselhulp is bedoeld voor Oekraïense soldaten, en er staat ook uitdrukkelijk 'not for resale' op gedrukt. Daar lijken de sites zich geen zorgen om te maken. Meer nog, er zijn zelfs gespecialiseerde websites die voedselpakketten aanbieden van verschillende legers. Het doel daarvan is uiteenlopend. Ofwel vormt het zo een mekka voor verzamelaars, aan de andere kant is het ook spotgoedkoop. Eén pakket, met daarin 12 maaltijden, kost nog geen 9 euro. Op het menu: soep, pasta, koffie en ingrediënten als suiker, zout en zelfs toiletpapier.
Het is niet de eerste keer dat voedselpakketten op de dool gaan. Onder meer in Somalië en Haïti na de aardbeving was er grote malaise op vlak van voedselhulp die niet aankwam.

Op 25 februari 2014 hield hij een bijeenkomst met de rest van de G8 ter voorbereiding van een ministeriele meeting in mei over de aanpak van de drugshandel. Die zal allicht niet doorgaan.

Responding to criticism from Kiev and the West over the presence of Russian troops along the border with Ukraine, Lavrov said Russia had the right to move forces on its territory and said they would return to their permanent bases after completing military exercises.

A weakened Russian economy in the wake of its conflict with Ukraine will be felt in Finland. But he advocates that the European Union and Russia work together.
"If Russia’s economy drops by 3 percent, the Finnish economy will drop by half a percent. That’s a source of concern,” says Alexander Stubb, Finland’s Minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade.
“We have been experiencing a financial crisis for many years now and there will continue to be challenges with regards to economic growth. Now there’s the Ukraine crisis on top of all this. This is the very reason why European integration was undertaken: with it we aim to avoid conflicts. Even though conflicts arise, they are not borne within the EU,” says Stubb, who is known for his pro-EU stance.
Stubb stresses that it’s important to remember that the roots of the EU lie in a project started in the 1950s, when Germany and France needed to be brought closer together during the post-war years.
“The EU has brought peace, stability and prosperity,” says Stubb. “Granted, there have been conflicts on the borders of Europe such as in the former Yugoslavia and now between Russian and Ukraine.”
“As I have said before, money is the best peace mediator. When economies are tightly interwoven and dependent on one another, the threshold for conflict is considerably higher. That’s why all the walls that are between the EU and Russia need to be taken down so that we are dependent on one another and these types of conflicts are avoided.”

De geruchtenmachine draait op volle toeren in Donetsk. Plaatselijke journalisten hebben zelfs een 'top-15' kunnen opmaken. Een aantal van die geruchten lijkt volgens hen te onwaarschijnlijk om waar te zijn, maar toch zijn er veel mensen die er de waarheid in zien. Zo geloven veel inwoners van de Donbas dat het waar is dat premier Arseni Jatsenjoek heeft gezegd dat iedereen die geen Oekraïens spreekt het land uit moet.
Volgens de journalisten worden geruchten in de Donbas doorgaans gespreid door overheidsbestuurders en directeuren van grote bedrijven. Niet zelden doen ze dat op de regionale televisie.
In de Donbas zou de grensbewaking zijn overgenomen door leden van de ultra-nationalistische beweging Rechtse Sector en door banderivtsi die op enig moment de Russen zullen aanvallen. Er zou in de Donbas een crematorium in aanbouw zijn om Russische inwoners te verbranden. Oekraïense militairen in Donetsk en omgeving zouden mensen slaan die Russisch tegen hen spreken.
Een bij naam genoemd bedrijf verplicht de werknemers om een deel van hun salaris af te staan voor het in de oude staat terugbrengen van het Onafhankelijkheidsplein in Kiev en om de Rechtse Sector financieel te steunen. Er zouden plannen zijn om de kinderbijslag af te schaffen en kinderen zouden als slaven naar Europa worden afgevoerd.
De mijnen in de Donbas zouden onder water worden gezet en er wordt radioactief afval uit de Verenigde Staten en Europa in opgeslagen. De winkels worden gevuld met vergiftigde producten uit Amerika en Europa. Homo's, pedofielen en sodomieten nemen de macht over en ze trouwen dan met wie ze maar willen. Er is een grootschalige mobilisatie op komst en niemand krijgt nog loon. Het leger neemt drugsverslaafden aan nadat ze eerst gedrogeerd worden om hun handtekening te zetten.
De viering van zowel de Dag van de Arbeid als van de Overwinningsdag wordt afgeschaft. Er zijn loopgraven rond Donetsk gegraven en er zijn tanks in aantocht die de stad gaan beschieten. Dan is er ook nog het gerucht dat de Amerikanen uit zijn op een oorlog in Oekraïne, waarbij ze genetisch gemanipuleerde soldaten gaan inzetten.
Een apart verhaal is dat van Sashko Bily, doorgaans om een gesprek mee af te sluiten. Deze leider van de Rechtse Sector werd aanvankelijk opgevoerd als schrikbeeld voor de bevolking. Maar aangezien hij vorige week de dood vond bij zijn arrestatie, is dat verhaal waardeloos geworden. Inmiddels is er een nieuwe versie: Sashko Bily was een Oekraïense Robin Hood, hij hielp de armen en moest daarom worden gedood.

ODESSA, Ukraine -- About 100 activists who support the EuroMaidan Revolution that ousted President Viktor Yanukvoych confronted a similar-sized crowd of separatists who support Russia on a square near City Hall in the southern Black Sea port city.
At issue in the April 4 rally was an attempt by City Council members to oust interim Mayor Oleh Bryndak, who wants Odessa to secede from Ukraine. But the officials didn’t have a quorum and so ended the meeting. Bryndak, who was a secretary of City Council, became interim mayor on Nov. 4 after the previous Odessa mayor, Oleksiy Kostusev, resigned. A mayoral election will take place on May 25, the same day as Ukraine's presidential vote and the election for Kyiv mayor.
Hundreds of police officers stood in two lines to separate the two groups and prevent clashes between them.
Tensions remain high in the multinational, predominantly Russian-speaking Odessa, a city of 1 million people. It is a place where many people believe in the myths about Russia's grand imperial and heroic Soviet past.
At the same time, the pro-Ukrainian supporters are also numerous in this city, where the Ukrainian Navy is being resettled from Crimea after being expelled during the Russian annexation of Ukraine's peninsula last month.

Activists of EuroMaidan believe that the participants of Kulikovo Field, where even some parties hailing Soviet dictator Josef Stalin were seen, mostly turned out for money, getting paid either by the mayor’s team or Russia directly.
“I’ve heard that they receive money through the Russian consulate and (local Orthodox Church metropolitan) Agafangel,” Nasadiuk said. Other pro-European activists also admitted seeing Russian citizens there who traveled to Odessa from Transnistria, the breakaway region of neighboring Moldova.
Wearing camouflage uniforms, dozens of representatives of EuroMaidan civilian self-defense members stood in front of the City Hall, saying they were ready to defend participants of the rival camps and help the police.
Teenagers from the militant EuroMaidan Right Sector nationalists watched with concern at menacing men who congregated in a nearby park.
But despite the fears, clashes didn't take place. People talked with each other.
“We have an agreement with both the Right Sector and the (civilian) self-defense members of Kulikovo Field to extinguish possible provocations,” said Artem Filipenko, local political expert and member of a EuroMaidan self-defense group that supports Ukraine's sovereignty.

All the the Ukrainian servicemen stationed in Crimea were allowed to leave for mainland Ukraine but 8,000 military men stayed and applied for permission to join the Russian army, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said in televised comments on Friday.
Russia annexed the Black Sea peninsula in March after Crimea residents voted overwhelmingly to seek to join Russia. The referendum was called two weeks earlier, coinciding with the military occupation of the region by armed men in unmarked uniforms.
Shoigu on Friday described claims that the Russian army has mistreated Ukrainian servicemen as "improper and provocative." Several senior Ukrainian officers including a military base commander were briefly detained by the Russian forces and kept in custody for several days.

The Russian Lower House has passed the first reading of a bill introducing prison sentences for the public justification of Nazism. The sponsors would like to sign it into law before May 9 – the anniversary of Russia’s victory in WWII.
The bill was approved unanimously on Friday.
“Our country has not simply defended itself. We have defended the whole world from Nazism. Our people suffered the greatest casualties in this war. For us, the rehabilitation of Nazism will always be a crime against our country and our people. Rehabilitation of Nazism is not only a shot fired at the past and mocking millions of victims. It is also a shot fired at the future, an instigation for new crimes against peace and security,”one of the main sponsors of the bill, the head of the Lower House Committee for Security Irina Yarovaya said as she presented the bill to MPs.
Earlier, Yarovaya has told the press that the urge for such a law is especially evident today in times of the violent political crisis in Ukraine launched and supported by radicals and neo-Nazis.

The new bill, however, has drawn criticism from OSCE's Representative on Freedom of the Media, who said that the narrow application of such a law might lead to its abuse and suppress political and critical speech on issues of history. Russia’s Foreign Ministry blasted this statement as intervention into another nation’s legislative process and the bill’s sponsors said that many foreign nations had similar legislation protecting the historical truth as stated by the Nuremberg Tribunal.

The European Union plans to set up an international tribunal focusing exclusively on crimes allegedly committed by Kosovo's ethnic Albanian rebels during their war with Serbia, The Associated Press has learned.
Plans for an independent tribunal amount to an admission of failure by the West to hold its ethnic Albanian allies accountable for war crimes. The rebels had the backing of NATO during the war — and the West has staunchly supported Kosovo in its efforts to emerge from the conflict as an independent state. But the ethnic Albanians have also come under increasing pressure from the international community to reckon with their own war crimes, including alleged organ harvesting.
Kosovo declared independence in 2008, and it has been recognized by over 100 nations, although not by Serbia and its ally Russia.
The court is expected to start proceedings by next year, a senior EU official told The Associated Press, adding that the rules and reach of the tribunal are still being discussed with Kosovo authorities.
The court is to be symbolically seated in Kosovo, but most key proceedings such as hearing witness testimony would take place in the Netherlands, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal has yet to be approved by Kosovo's assembly.
Prosecutions of ethnic Albanian rebels — both in Kosovo and at the United Nations war crimes tribunal in the Hague, Netherlands — have been marred by widespread intimidation of witnesses and their families. Former rebels are considered by many Kosovars as heroes who fought for freedom from Serbia. Some 10,000 people died during the 1998-1999 war and about 1,700 are considered missing.
The court, which will be set up and paid for by the EU, is to consider allegations of organ harvesting by the now-disbanded Kosovo Liberation Army rebels as well as the disappearance of some 400 people — most of them Kosovo Serbs — at the end of the war.
