Ok, 'what you see is what you get' dus.quote:Op maandag 28 oktober 2013 17:57 schreef -CRASH- het volgende:

Satellite Falling Out Of Orbit
A European satellite will soon be falling to Earth, and no one knows quite where it will land. About 25 to 45 fragments of the one-ton spacecraft should survive all the way to the surface, with the largest pieces possibly weighting 200 pounds.
The satellites job was mapping Earths gravitational field in detail, but that gravity will become the crafts enemy sometime in the next few days. The spacecrafts destruction makes it one in a parade of satellites and other objects falling from the sky in so-called uncontrolled entries.
However, it is just one ton of about 100 tons of debris that will fall from the sky just this year, reports The New York Times. While scientists cant predict where the debris will land, they assure there are no known instances of injuries sustained by space debris.
Rune Flogerghagen, the mission manager for the European Space Agencys Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE), explained, Its rather hard to predict where the spacecraft will re-enter and impact. Concretely our best engineering prediction is now for a re-entry on Sunday, with a possibility for it slipping into early Monday.
The European satellite has been falling toward Earth since it ran out of propellant last month. It drops about 2.5 miles per day and still had 113 miles to go as of Wednesday. Space.com notes that this isnt the first time a falling spacecraft or satellite stirred up media attention and made the public nervous.
The 2011 re-entries of NASAs Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) and the German Röntgensatellit ROSAT satellite caused concern, followed by Russias failed Phobos-Grunt mission to Mars the next year.
Several space groups will follow the GOCEs descent. The ESAs Space Debris Office will also issue re-entry predictions and risk assessments as the satellite continues to fall to Earth. It will update its Member States and relevant safety authorities.

Ground Control to Major Tom(ato)
No, this is not a photoshop. You are looking at a fresh tomato—a cosmomato? A tomatonaut?—floating in space, orbiting at 4.791 miles per second, 230 miles above your heads. Why the hell is there a tomato in space?
If you're a good spacenerd cadet, you know already that the only things orbiting at 4.791 miles per second, 230 miles above your heads, and capable of having a fresh tomato onboard could be a) the International Space Station or b) an alien spaceship full of sentient, warp-drive capable alien tomatoes getting ready to strike our planet for centuries of tomato sacrifices by humans.
Astronaut Koichi Wakata has the answer: "One fresh tomato for dinner makes us happy in space. It came up with us on Soyuz TMA-11M two weeks ago." I wish I could have tomato salads in space too.

Yes, this is a fresh tomato orbiting in space at 4.8 miles per second

Vraagje:
quote:Hubble spots water spuring from Europa
Jupiter’s icy moon Europa, home to a probable buried ocean, just added another twist to its exotic cool. The Hubble Space Telescope has spotted possible plumes of water spraying from Europa’s south pole.
The jets resemble the giant icy geyser seen on Saturn’s moon Enceladus. Plumes on Europa could be even more exciting because they hint at the ability to tap a subsurface habitat that might even harbour extraterrestrial life.
“If this pans out, it’s potentially the biggest news in the outer Solar System since the discovery of the Enceladus plume,” says Robert Pappalardo, a planetary scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, who was not involved in the research.
