Brian Wilson Re-Records Smile for Fall Release
Recent acid trips only result in nightmarish visions of Kokomo

According to his official website, wily old Beach Boys frontman Brian Wilson is preparing to finally issue his legendary Smile album nearly four decades after it was originally scheduled to hit stores. There's just one catch: It's an all-new recording! Surprise, Beach Boys fans! You all are suckers, who suck. Yes, defying reports in late February that Wilson would compile the original tapes from the Beach Boys' well-documented 1966 and 1967 sessions into a cohesive, definitive LP version at last, Wilson's pulled the old switcharoo and decided instead to re-record all of the material.

Smile has been something of a fantasy for Beach Boys fans since its recording, with countless bootlegs in circulation, speculated tracklists, and not a few books published recounting its legacy. Over the years, it has often been rumored that Wilson would finally issue a completed version, but as release dates came and went, so did hope that the album would ever exist as anything but a jumbled series of studio outtakes. Yet, like the current Pixies reunion that most imagined would never happen, Wilson is now promising the record its day in the sun-- just not in the way he first intended to present it.

Wilson pored over the vaulted Smile tapes with his original collaborator Van Dyke Parks last November in preparation for the re-recording, which inspired the two to create a few scraps of new material with which Wilson could tie the songs together on tour. After premiering the final piece at London's Royal Festival Fall last February, Wilson entered Los Angeles' Sunset Sound studio, where he remains to this day, toiling away to finish the record in time for its newly scheduled September 28th release via Nonesuch Records. Here's hoping these sessions go better than the last.

Wilson has also scheduled another bunch of Smile performances for Europe this summer, to take place after he completes his new sessions. The dates kick off July 13th at The Hague in Holland, and run through early August, when the tour comes to an end at Sweden's The Cirkus. In there somewhere, he's got four goddamn nights planned again for the Royal Festival Hall in London, which should promptly sell out. A U.S. tour is rumored to be announced near Smile's release, but at press time, nothing has been confirmed. Dates:

Misschien is hun vroegere werk een beetje achterhaald vanwege té hoog surfgehalte, maar het latere werk (1965-1975) is tijdloos te noemen...

Erg benieuwd door wie ze achterhaald zijn dan......

Valt me wel op dat nog nergens genoemd wordt dat Wilson ook op 14 juli optreed in het Congrescentrum....

Een topic over zo'n goede band moet natuurlijk wel levend blijven, daarom maar een schop omhoog

Zo een goede reden voor een kick

Een beschouwing van de rerelease is al een tijdje geleden op de FP verschenen: CD/DVD: The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds

Wie kan mij uitleggen waarom Brian Wilson precies zo'n genie is? Het grappige is dat ik het overal lees maar nergens uitleg vind. Ik doel dan meer op zijn manier van produceren, hij schijnt namelijk zijn tijd ver vooruit te zijn geweest. Ik ben best wel benieuwd wat hij nu precies deed dan!

Gebruik maken van niet-standaard instrumenten in de pop-muziek en gewoon een nieuwe stroming creeeren. Brian Wilson was zeg maar het begin van een nieuwe muziekrevolutie. Helaas heeft hij dat nooit afgemaakt en zijn de Beatles met Sgt. Peppers gekomen. In principe stond "Smile" gepland om voor Sgt Peppers te verschijnen.
Uiteindelijk hebben de beatles de nieuwe muziekstroming ingeluid en niet the Beach Boys. Pet Sounds was een voorloper hiervan.

Daarnaast staat Brian Wilson natuurlijk bekend om teksten schrijven en vooral leunen op meerstemmige zang (vooral in de begin periode van The Beach Boys)

Thanks, maar ik wil graag wat dieper gaande informatie. Zoals ik eerder al aangaf; 'over zijn manier van produceren' bv.

It's not steeped in the weighty philosophical and political concerns that other Angelinos such as Jackson Browne were penning. Instead, it's a wispy rock tune revolving around a beautiful piano figure, shuffling guitars, and lyrics that take a personal concern for the state of the nature crumbling around it. "Dreamer" is a classic piece of '70s rock as it wound itself around the emerging R&B of the time, with interlaced horn lines, synths, and funky basslines cutting through the bridge and into the final verses; all steeped in a gorgeous, lush groove that even at this relaxed tempo won't quit. Mostly, however, Pacific Ocean Blue is a diary. Given that it was recorded over nearly seven years, the songs reflect the snapshot quality of Wilson's life in the studio: what he was capable of, what he learned, and how he stretched himself. Take, for example, the tender stoner balladry of "Thoughts of You" and "Time;" with their languid, echoing piano hovering in the mix with a shadow presence as Wilson sings with a longing that is true yet muted by his seeming resignation to things being a total loss. The latter track also features a moody trumpet solo reminiscent of Chet Baker and transforms itself into a horn-driven anthem by its nadir. There is a bootleg version of Pacific Ocean Blues that contains -- besides a master that is every bit as good as the released version -- five bonus tracks (mostly backing vocal tracks) that may not be everybody's cup of tea, but fanatics will absolutely have to have them. This album is a classic, blissed-out, coked-up slice of '70s rock and pop that is as essential as Fleetwood Mac's Rumours.

Heb 'm vandaag al 3 keer gedraaid, vooral 'You and I' is wonderbaarlijk mooi, aanrader!

Pacific Ocean Blue is gaaf, vooral River Song. Hij komt deze zomer (eindelijk!) weer officieel op CD uit, met waarschijnlijk een bonusdisc met demo's en ander leuk spul!

Goed nieuws! Heb je tracks van de opvolger (die nog niet af was toen ie verdronk) Bamboo ook gehoord? Schijnen best goed te zijn. Volgens Dennis zou het album 10 keer zijn wat Pacific Ocean Blue was.

Eigenlijk ken ik deze groep niet zo goed.
Vroeger waren ze volgens mij keiberoemd he? ( * Paul kijkt Golfer en Tong80 aan)
Maar toch wel lollige liedjes, ken ze meer van de reclames volgens mij en onder filmpjes op tv.
Liedjes draaien ze eigenlijk nooit op de radio

Aanraders zijn de albums "Surfin' " en Sufin' USA
Keiharde instrumentals, en heerlijke vocals

Geweldige band. Als ik die muziek hoor wil ik meteen weer terug naar California. Ik kwam laatst een versie tegen van de RHCP en die deden het verbazingwekkend goed.

Ze waren een inspiratie voor de Beatles. Ik hoorde dat 'God only knows' het favoriete nummer van McCartney is.

McCartney geeft in Anthology ook aan dat ze 'over de Beach Boys' heen wilden met hun stemmen, wat uiteindelijk resulteerde in Paperback writer. De inspiratie voor Pet sounds was dan weer Sgt. Pepper. En dan hebben we natuurlijk ook de dikke vette knipoog van McCartney naar The Beach Boys met Back in the USSR.

Net andersom, Sgt. Pepper's (1967) is deels geïnspireerd op Pet Sounds (1966). Sgt. Pepper's wordt echter wel eens gezien als mogelijke oorzaak dat het album Smile nooit door de Beach Boys is uitgebracht en dat Brian Wilson in een depressie is geraakt en paranoïde is geworden, omdat ze het nooit zouden kunnen evenaren. Wat er allemaal van waar is weet ik niet, maar The Beach Boys en The Beatles hadden iig een creatieve strijd die het beste bij beiden naar boven heeft gehaald

Ze hadden in ieder geval eerder een plaat uit ("Surfin' Safari" oktober '62, "Please Please Me" maart '63).

Maar wat een geniale band blijft het toch... Ik heb periodes dat ik er nauwelijks naar luister, maar iedere keer kom ik toch weer terug bij een klein aantal artiesten die nooit gaan vervelen - waaronder de Beach Boys dus...

Vaak zijn hun albums een beetje samengeraapt naar mijn idee, juweeltjes worden afgewisseld met troep die je nog voor het nummer is afgelopen alweer vergeten bent. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan het album Surf's Up. Geniale nummers Long Promised Road en de titeltrack worden afgewisseld met bagger van de bovenste plank als Take A Load Off Your Feet of Don't Go Near The Water. Terwijl er zo veel gave nummers zijn die ze nooit officieel hebben uitgebracht op een album, zoals San Miguel, Soulful Old Man Sunshine en Still I Dream Of It.. Om het natuurlijk nog niet eens te hebben over de originele Smile opnames uit '66/'67

Jazeker Opgenomen in Nederland, in Baambrugge om precies te zijn. Ze hebben hier wel een paar maanden gewerkt. En deze plaat wordt beschouwd als één van de beste Beach Boys albums, ondanks het feit dat Brian Wilson er weinig aan heeft bijgedragen (hij was toen al behoorlijk (geestes)ziek). De andere Beach boys leden hebben dat echter heel goed opgevangen.
