De Taliban zijn vastbesloten de Britse prins Harry te doden. Dat heeft een woordvoerder van de radicale islamitische organisatie via de telefoon laten weten.
De tweede zoon van kroonprins Charles kwam vorige week in Afghanistan aan voor een tweede periode als militair in dat land. Hij zal 4 maanden als piloot van een Apache-helikopter werken vanaf kamp Bastion in de provincie Helmand.
Volgens de zegsman, die zich Zabihullah Mujahid noemde, hebben de Taliban een 'plan van hoge waarde' om de prins uit de weg te ruimen. 'Wij zullen ons best doen om prins Harry en de andere Britse militairen in Helmand te doden', benadrukte hij.
De 27-jarige prins diende al eerder in Afghanistan. Hij werkte er in 2007 en 2008 als infanteriesoldaat. Toen uitlekte dat hij als militair actief was in het land, werd zijn diensttijd afgebroken, omdat hij extra gevaar zou lopen. Er zullen vast wel wat neergestort zijn maar vaak claimen mensen dan dat ze zijn neergeschoten ipv. dat het gewoon een technisch probleem was.

Hier in Engeland vinden ze Prins Harry een bikkel, juist omdat hij gewoon met gevaar voor eigen leven durft mee te te vechten. Ik ben wel enigszins verbaasd dat ze nu zoveel informatie geven. Eerder vocht hij daar al in het geheim, maar toen uitlekte waar dat was hebben ze hem teruggehaald omdat dat extra gevaar oplevert voor de andere militairen in dezelfde groep. Misschien omdat het nu in een helikopter is en dat probleem dan minder speelt. Hiervoor vocht hij gewoon met de grondtroepen.

In totaal toch 14 Apaches. Niet veel vergeleken met Chinooks of Blackhawks, maar ook niet helemaal zonder risico.
Maar wel veel veiliger dan op de grond natuurlijk.
