This image was acquired at an angle of 30 degrees from straight down, looking west. Another image looking more directly down will be acquired in five days, completing a stereo pair along with this image.

HiRISE is one of six instruments on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The University of Arizona, Tucson, operates the orbiter's HiRISE camera, which was built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., Boulder, Colo. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Project for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, Washington. Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Denver, built the spacecraft.

Oudere hardware die zichzelf bewezen heeft wordt door de NASA als veiliger in gebruik ingeschat dan nieuwe hardware. Overcapaciteit is niet nodig, hiermee kan het ook.quote:

Wat de poster boven mij zegt, plus dat het ontwerp natuurlijk al vele jaren op de tekentafel heeft gelegen. Daarnaast zijn de specs eigenlijk best goed... Je moet niet vergeten dat normaal ontzettend veel rekenkracht gebruikt zodat we als mens kunnen kijken naar al die fancy interfaces en mooie (game)beelden op je computer/telefoon. Een robot heeft daar geen ene zak aan natuurlijk.quote:

Je weet zeg maar dat de computer die in de Apollo zat waarmee de maanlanding gedaan is slechts 64kb geheugen had en 0.043MHz. Om dat even in perspectief te zetten, een modern broodrooster heeft betere specs.

First of all, the computer was selected about 8 years ago, so we have the latest and greated space certified parts that existed then. Second of all, it was the most rubost and proven space grade processor at that time. Thirdly, in order to make a processor radiation hardened it requires lots of tricks on the silicon that is not conducive to making it fast. Given that, it does not run any GUIs and can just focus on raw programming, and actually gets a lot done. All of the programming is done in C, and our toolchain is very similar to programming on any platform.

Ja, er is uiteraard geen GUI, en alles is geschreven in C (volgens de Q&A sessie op reddit)quote:

Dat ook. Maar de software van een specifiek apparaat zoals de rover of een Airbus zijn geprogrammeerd met één doel in gedachten. Die dingen hoeven niet zelf 'na te denken' over berekeningen of vervolgacties zoals een normale desktop/laptop/tablet dat wel moet. De CPU van een vliegtuig hoeft bijvoorbeeld alleen maar een (relatief) simpel mechanische actie uit te voeren, de condities en te nemen stappen zijn allemaal volledig uitgedacht en geprogrammeerd.quote:
