Een 'bitter sweet victory'. Zo noemen ze in Israël de langverwachte vrijlating van hun 'held', soldaat Gilad Shalit. De prijs is hoog - met honderden criminele Palestijnen op vrije voeten - maar principes gaan in Israël blijkbaar nog altijd voor de angst. Vijf vragen over een historische deal.

Eerst even, wordt Shalit nu inderdaad onthaald als een held?
Held, held..., niet echt. Natuurlijk zijn de Israëliërs blij dat hun 'verloren zoon' terugkeert. Er was een ware hype ontstaan rond de vijf jaar geleden gevangengenomen Shalit. Iedereen loopt met polsbandjes met daarop Free Shalit - mede dankzij de professionele inzet van een pr-bureau, ingeschakeld door de familie van de soldaat. Maar Shalit is eigenlijk meer een 'nerd-achtig'-figuur, die feitelijk gezien, op strategisch gebied, natuurlijk een sukkel is. Hij werd destijds door de Palestijnen ingerekend na een compleet mislukte militaire operatie.

Ok, na vijf jaar is er dan een deal over zijn vrijlating. Waarom zo ontzettend veel gevangenen vrij in ruil voor één soldaat?
De huidige Israëlische onderhandelaars betaalden in zekere zin de prijs voor het afschieten van een eerder bod. Vlak na de gevangenneming van Shalit, vijf jaar geleden, bood Hamas aan hem vrij te laten in ruil voor het vrijlaten van 'slechts' 250 gevangenen. Toenmalig premier Olmert wees de deal af, waardoor Hamas jarenlang de hakken in het zand zette. 1000 gevangenen, of anders niets, klonk het. Er zat voor Netanyahu niets anders op dan uiteindelijk in te stemmen. Want in Israël gaan ze door het vuur voor hun soldaten. Het leger is veel meer verweven in de maatschappij dan bijvoorbeeld in Nederland of Engeland. De prijs die men wil betalen voor een ontvoerde soldaat ligt veel hoger. Netanyahu liet families van terreurslachtoffers weten hun gevoelens over de ruil te begrijpen. Zijn broer Yonatan kwam in 1976 om bij de bevrijding van gijzelaars in Entebe, Oeganda. 'Maar ik ben verplicht een militair terug te brengen die eropuit is gestuurd om Israël te beschermen'.

En waarom nu?
Israël liet in het conflict een bemiddelende rol aan Egypte. Maar met de grillige politieke ontwikkelingen in dat land, is het nog maar de vraag met welke machthebbers Israël straks te maken krijgt. Er was Netanyahu veel aan gelegen om snel zaken te doen met de huidige gematigde politici in Egypte.

Maar Hamas viert de overwinning én ruikt nu natuurlijk bloed. Nog een soldaat kidnappen en er komen wéér honderden gevangenen vrij. Toch?
Die kans is inderdaad best groot. Maar het Israëlische parlement hoopt daar een stokje voor te steken. Het bereidt een wet voor waarbij het in de toekomst alleen nog maar mogelijk is om één ontvoerde soldaat te ruilen met één Palestijnse gevangene. Een dergelijke megaruil is dan niet meer mogelijk. Of Hamas hier ook maar één nacht wakker van ligt, is de vraag.

Is deze historische vrijlating nu een overwinning voor zittend premier Netanyahu?
Als blijkt dat straks één van de vrijgelaten Palestijnse gevangenen zich opblaast in een Israëlische pizzeria natuurlijk niet. Dan zijn we weer verder van huis. Tot die tijd krijgt hij het voordeel van de twijfel. Het volk staat achter de beslissing om zo'n ongelooflijk aantal gevangenen vrij te laten. Uit een peiling bleek onlangs dat 79 procent de beslissing steunt. Het maakt de extremistische Hamas sterker en dat biedt Netanyahu de mogelijkheid om in zijn retoriek harder uit de halen en er zodoende politiek voordeel uit te halen. Daarbij zou het voor hetzelfde geld het begin van een nieuw begin kunnen zijn. Met andere woorden, Israël wilde nooit praten met de extremistische Hamas. Want in haar manifest zegt de partij de vernietiging van Israël en in plaats daarvan een islamitische staat na te streven. Reden voor Israël om niet met Hamas te willen praten. Dat is nu - weliswaar dankzij onderhandelaars - gelukt. En dat schept mogelijkheden voor nieuwe onderhandelingen over Gaza, dat van de buitenwereld werd afgesloten na de kidnapping van Shalit. Mogelijk komt er dus nog iets goeds uit.

The Arab side is the clear winner of the Gilad Shalit swap. If anyone around here thought Israel could challenge the Arab standards of cruelty and primitivism, Tuesday’s events sat the record straight. We lost the sadism contest by knock-out.

It started in the West Bank, where Hamas fans marked the joyous occasion of their countrymen’s release from jail with some trademark Arab civility: Urging renewed terror attacks and the butchering of Jews. Indeed, when it comes to pure lust for Jewish blood, the Palestinians outshine virtually any competitors.

Later, Palestinians in Bitunia continued their celebration with another highly sophisticated tradition: Hurling stones at Israeli security forces (deployed in the area in order to ensure the safety of released Arab detainees.) Here too, our Arab neighbors won the much-coveted “We live in the Stone Age” award hands down.

Yet the true highlight of the day came later, when Egypt delayed Shalit’s return for the sake of a forced interview on Egyptian national television. In what must have been one of the most embarrassing, disgraceful moments in the history of global journalism, a callous so-called newswoman bombarded the just-released, barely breathing Shalit with a series of brainless questions ranging from awkward to outright idiotic (“So why were more videos of you not released?” “What lessons did you learn from your captivity?”)

The Egyptian dimwit also did not miss the chance to serve up some good old propaganda, asking Shalit whether he will be joining a campaign to free the remaining 4,000 Arab prisoners upon his return to Israel. Shalit’s ability to handle this merciless, moronic ambush under such incredibly difficult conditions speaks volumes about his mental strength and noble character, which starkly contradicted his interviewer’s stunning senselessness.

Israel an island of civility
The Egyptian anchorwoman, Shahira Amin, later took pride in her great “scoop” in an interview with Israeli TV, highlighting how clueless she is in respect to enlightened journalistic standards. With her shameful performance she joined a long list of fellow Arabs who had proved time and again in the past that speaking fluent English and wearing modern clothes does not make one intelligent, civilized or humane.

Notably, while all this was going on, Israel went about its side of the deal with customary dignity, avoiding any disparagement of the freed Palestinian prisoners.

The above statements should be qualified with two notes: Firstly, not all Arabs are like this. It is not the Arab “race” that is flawed, but rather, Arab culture and society which are mired in a cesspool of primitivism and barbarity. One can only pity the honorable, intelligent citizens of these societies for being surrounded by such spectacular mediocrity.


Secondly, despite our neighbors’ unsavory character, these are our “partners for coexistence” in our home region, the Middle East. As such, we must do everything in our power to maintain our peace treaty with Egypt, a priceless asset for Israel, and attempt to secure some kind of understandings (rather than “peace”) with our Palestinian foes.

Yet while doing this, we should always keep in mind the kind of people we are dealing with, as was made clear during Tuesday’s events. Israel is indeed a villa in the jungle, an island of civility surrounded by mean-spirited, wicked barbarians

Egyptian anchorwoman Shahira Amin, who came under for her insensitive interview with Gilad Shalit moments after he was released from Hamas captivity, told BBC network that she was unaware that Shalit was forced to submit to an interview.

Responding to harsh criticism of what was described by many media outlets as a "cruel" interview, Amin said she asked to conduct the interview, and was simply told it would be arranged. However, it was not confirmed until the last moment, she said, adding she did not realize it was a forced interview.

Officials in Israel said Tuesday evening they were surprised by the Egyptian interview and were unaware of Cairo's plans. Defense officials stressed that the TV interview was not undertaken with Israel's consent, coordination or knowledge.

As Israeli officials did not imagine that the Egyptians would seek to interview Shalit, the issue was not discussed in the meetings ahead of the swap and no request to avoid such interview was submitted by Jerusalem.

Amin became one of the heroes of Egypt's uprising in February of this year after quitting the Nile TV network to join anti-government protestors.

At the time she said she was not allowed to cover what was happening at Cairo's Tahrir Square, adding that she did not wish to be part of a "propaganda machine."

However, Amin's crude interview with Shalit Tuesday morning featured heavy pro-Egyptian and pro-Palestinian propaganda. Through the interview, the anchorwoman attempted to prompt Shalit to praise Egypt for its role in arranging the prisoner exchange.

At one point she also asked the Israeli soldier whether he would be joining a campaign to free Arab prisoners held by Israel upon his return to the Jewish State.


During Tuesday's interview, which was aired by Egypt's national television station, it appeared that Amin was virtually abusing Shalit, moments after he was brought to Egypt from Gaza.

Shalit was having trouble breathing during the interview and looked exhausted and confused, yet Amin kept on presenting him with questions, many of them absurd and ridiculous.

Responding to the anchorwoman's question regarding remaining Palestinian prisoners, Shalit said he would be happy to see them released, as long as they no longer attack Israel.

Eleven Palestinians made V-for-victory signs as they arrived in Turkey early on Wednesday as part of the thousand-for-one prisoner exchange, television pictures showed.

Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit and hundreds of Palestinians crossed Israel's borders in opposite directions on Tuesday under the swap, one of the biggest ever such exchanges between the two sides.

A private plane flew the ten men and one woman from Cairo to the Turkish capital Ankara, where they were met at Esenboga Airport by the Palestinian ambassador to Ankara Nabil Maarouf and Turkish foreign ministry officials.

Among the Palestinians was Amna Muna, who on Tuesday caused a brief delay in the implementation of the deal after refusing to be moved to the Gaza Strip.

Muna lured teenager Ofir Rahum to his death in 2001. She is considered the leader of the female Palestinian prisoners held in Israel and previous reports suggested she terrorized inmates. It was feared that families of the prisoners will seek revenge over her abuse of the other inmates.

"We are grateful to the Turkish government for its support in the process of releasing the Palestinians and bringing them to Turkey," state-run Anatolian news agency quoted Maarouf as telling reporters at the airport.

"God willing we will continue to seek Turkey's support until Palestine attains freedom," he added.
Media reports said the 11 were spending the night in Ankara but it was not disclosed where for security reasons.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu had announced on Tuesday that about 10 Palestinians would come to Turkey. Some 40 of the Palestinians were sent to Turkey, Syria and Qatar.

Davutoglu said Turkey was willing to assist the prisoner exchange as it believes it will support the peace process. He described the prisoner swap as having a humanitarian element.

Meanwhile, Turkey's Hurriyet newspaper quoted an official source as saying Ankara will keep the prisoners away from the public eye for the time being for their own personal safety. Israel, the report said, did not demand any special conditions from Ankara in handling the prisoners.


Turkey's once-close ties with fellow regional power Israel have deteriorated sharply since Israeli naval commandos killed nine Turks in May 2010 in a raid on a ship carrying aid to the Gaza Strip.

Turkey downgraded diplomatic ties with Israel and halted defense trade after the Jewish state confirmed last month it would not apologize for the raid.
