FERRER QUALIFIES FOR BARCLAYS ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS FOR THIRD TIME
LONDON – David Ferrer of Spain is the fifth player to qualify for the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, to be held November 20-27 at The O2 in London, featuring the world’s Top 8 singles players and doubles teams of the year.
After advancing to the quarter-finals at the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Thursday, Ferrer joins Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Roger Federer as the other qualified singles players.
The 29-year-old Valencia resident will be making his third appearance in the season finale, the second in a row. In 2007, he went undefeated in round robin play and reached the title match, dropping one set along the way before falling to No. 1 Roger Federer.
“This is what I have been fighting for all year,” said Ferrer, who joins countryman Nadal in the year-end championship. I've had a great season with a lot of wins and I can't wait to return to London. It is such a great event and it is so special to be among the top 8 players once again. The atmosphere is incredible there.”
The No. 5th-ranked Spaniard has posted a 2-3 mark in ATP World Tour finals in 2011, winning titles in Auckland (d. Nalbandian) in January and Acapulco (d. Almagro) in late February. He was runner-up to Nadal in the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Monte-Carlo and Barcelona in April and to Swede Robin Soderling in Bastad in July. In the first Grand Slam tournament of the season at the Australian Open, he reached the semi-finals, defeating No. 1 Nadal en route.
He has also helped his country to the Davis Cup final (vs. Argentina in December), by posting a 3-0 record in wins over the U.S. in Austin, Texas, defeating Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish, in the quarter-finals, and over France’s Gilles Simon on Sept. 16 in the semi-finals.
The Barclays ATP World Tour Finals is the world's biggest indoor tennis event, where each of the top eight players and top eight doubles teams are drawn to play a minimum of three round-robin matches to determine which four players and teams advance to the knockout semi-finals.
