Mother of Libyan woman in rape-claim case says she is very proud of her daughter
TRIPOLI, LIBYA The mother of the woman who burst into a Tripoli hotel and claimed she had been raped by militiamen loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi hailed her daughter as a hero Sunday and said she had been offered money and a house by the government if she changed her story.
Aisha Ahmed, contacted by telephone at her home in Tobruk, in the rebel held eastern part of the country, said she was proud of the courage displayed by her daughter, Iman al-Obaidi, whose dramatic outburst Saturday was broadcast around the world.
I am very happy, very proud, said Ahmed, describing her daughter as a 26-year-old law student in Tripoli.
A government official in Tripoli who said he had spoken with Obaidi called her a prostitute and said the rape took place when a party went wrong.
Obaidi was catapulted to world fame Saturday when she burst into the breakfast buffet at Tripolis Rixos Hotel, where the foreign press corps is staying as guests of Gaddafi's regime.
Disheveled, weeping, bleeding and bruised, she told reporters she had been raped by 15 Gaddafi militiamen after being detained at a checkpoint because she comes from the eastern city of Benghazi, the epicenter of the revolt against the Gaddafi regime. Before she could finish her story, security guards, government minders and wait staff violently overpowered her and hauled her away in an unmarked car.
Hasan Modeer, a rebel activist who was with Obaidi's mother in Tobruk, said a government official had called Ahmed at 3 a.m. Sunday, asking her to convince her daughter to change her story.
They said they will give her a new house and a lot of money and anything she wanted, Modeer said, adding that Ahmed had relayed the message to her daughter by phone but that Obaidi had refused.
She said, I will die rather than change my words, Modeer said.
But government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim said that he had talked to Obaidi by telephone and that it turned out she knew her assailants. He described her as a divorced mother who earned an income having parties with men and said the rape occurred after the men she was with tried to force her to drink whiskey and beat her up.
One of them was the son of a high-ranking government official, Ibrahim said, but otherwise there were no political implications to what he called a criminal case.
It is unfortunate she has to make a living in this way, he said.
Journalists have been pressing Ibrahim to allow them to meet with Obaidi to verify her story. But, he said, her family has so far refused to allow her to do so.
Obaidis father, Atiq Saleh al-Obaidi, said no such request had been relayed.
The only communication weve had was when they called us at 3 in the morning offering money if she recanted, he said.
He also contradicted the governments claim that his daughter was a divorced mother, saying she was single and has no children.
The incident offered insight into the regimes treatment of its citizens and the lengths to which it will go to prevent them from speaking out against the government. Journalists who tried to protect Obaidi were punched or knocked to the ground. One government minder pulled a pistol, and a CNN camera was smashed in the melee.
But with multiple news organizations on hand to record the event, video clips quickly found their way onto Facebook and Twitter, turning Obaidi into a symbol of defiance against Gaddafi among activists seeking to oust his regime.
Ahmed said she still has hope her daughter can be saved.

Colonel Gaddafi's son, Saif al-Islam, is touting a "transition" plan for Libya, according to the Saudi-owned newspaper, Asharq Alawsat.
Saif's plan "would see him take over control of Libya from his father during a transitional period during which Libya would transform from a revolutionary state to a democratic state that enjoys public and economic freedoms" the paper says.
The transitional period would last between two and three years, in return for a comprehensive ceasefire and negotiations with the opposition. Saif is also said to be pushing for assurances that "Colonel Gaddafi and his family will be granted immunity from prosecution, and will not be legally punished in any manner".
The report adds that Saif "has been in contact with officials in the US, British, and Italian governments, in an attempt to submit the above-mentioned plan".
Libyan opposition figures quoted by the paper dismissed Saif's plan as "just a new political manoeuvre" and "an attempt to gain time and fool public opinion".

Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan challenges western direct action and says prolonged conflict could lead to a 'second Iraq'quote:The Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has signalled that Turkey is ready to act as a mediator to broker an early ceasefire in Libya, as he warned that a drawn-out conflict risked turning the country into a "second Iraq" or "another Afghanistan" with devastating repercussions both for Libya and the Nato states leading the intervention.
In an exclusive interview with the Guardian, Erdogan said that talks were still under way with Muammar Gaddafi's government and the Transitional National Council. He also revealed that Turkey is about to take over the running of the rebel-held Benghazi harbour and airport to facilitate humanitarian aid, in agreement with Nato.
Speaking in Istanbul at the weekend, Erdogan said Gaddafi had to "provide some confidence to Nato forces right now" on the ground if there was to be progress towards the ceasefire the Libyan leader wanted and an "end to the blood being spilled in Libya".
His comments came as Nato leaders met in Brussels to finalise arrangements for the alliance - with Turkey's participation - to take over the enforcement of the UN no-fly zone from Tuesday, as well as for the more controversial air strikes against Gaddafi's ground forces.
Meanwhile, rebel forces completed their weekend take-over of a string of government-held oil towns, including Brega, Ras Lanuf and Bin Jawad, with the help of heavy coalition air strikes on pro-Gaddafi forces. By Sunday night their Their rapid advance westwards is heading for the Libyan leader's home town and stronghold, Sirte, where two loud explosions were heard.
The Turkish government, which is playing an increasingly important regional role and has the second largest armed forces within Nato, has been at the centre of the argument within the alliance over Libya, publicly clashing with the French president Nicolas Sarkozy.
Turkey opposed any outside military involvement before it began Erdogan described the idea of Nato intervention as a "nonsense" but has now agreed to participate in a non-combat role in the wake of the UN security resolutions and Arab League appeal.
His public challenge to US, British and French direct military intervention is likely to deepen Nato dissension and alarm western leaders who hoped Turkey had now acquiesced in the thrust of the Libya mission.
"We have been opposed to any unilateral action and we could never accept appeals such as that by the French minister for a new crusade," Erdogan told the Guardian, in a reference to comments made by France's interior minister, Claude Guant. His government would carry out its obligations under UN resolutions. "But for Turkey, it's out of the question to shoot at Libyan people or drop bombs on the Libyan people," Erdogan said in reference to the emerging "no-drive zone" policy. "Turkey's role will be to withdraw from Libya as soon as possible" and "restore the unity and integrity of the country based on the democratic demands of the people", he added.
It was vital, Erdogan said, that "this deployment should not be carried out for Libya's oil. Of course there will be a price for these actions and no one can guarantee that Libya won't have to pay a price."
Repeatedly drawing parallels with Iraq and Afghanistan which senior Turkish officials regard as a serious risk if there is a military stalemate Erdogan said Iraq was "still paying a price" 20 years after the Gulf war of 1991. "I'm afraid we could see another Afghanistan or a second Iraq emerging. When western forces entered Afghanistan nearly 10 years ago, people were talking of it being over in days, and people said the same in Iraq. But a million have died and a civilisation has as good as collapsed. We don't want to see a similar picture in Libya."
If the conflict was prolonged, the Turkish prime minister warned of a backlash against countries now carrying out air strikes. "It will be devastating for the entire Libyan people, and the repercussions will not be restricted to Libya, but will have a direct impact on those countries that have intervened."
Erdogan added: "There is a civil war in Libya and we have to bring that to an end."
He had spoken to Gaddafi repeatedly before the air strikes and to the Libyan prime minister since, while Turkey's foreign minister was in close touch with the Benghazi-based opposition.
It was crucial that contacts were maintained with both sides, he said. "Gaddafi wants a ceasefire, this came up when I was talking to the prime minister, but it's important for those circumstances to mature. It wouldn't be consistent to keep shooting while demanding a ceasefire."
If the two parties to the conflict requested Turkey to play the role of mediator, the Turkish prime minister said "we will take steps to do that" within the framework of Nato, the Arab League and African Union. "We can never ignore the democratic rights and liberties called for by the people of Libya, and change and transformation can never be delayed or postponed," Erdogan said, adding that a leader such as Gaddafi, with no formal position, should be able to "lay the foundation for such a transformation".
Erdogan's AKP party and its programme of Islamic democratisation and greater national independence is widely admired in the Arab world, and Erdogan widened his warning to autocratic governments facing popular uprisings throughout the region: "Leaders who are resistant to change and their people's demands may find that brings an end to their being a leader."
Erdogan was also fiercely critical of European governments he said had misunderstood Turkey's embrace of "Islam and democracy simultaneously".
In its negotiations to join the EU, Turkey had faced "obstacles that no country had ever witnessed before," adding: "Never mind, we will do what we will do."
He was at pains to rebut criticism in the western media over the jailing of journalists caught up in the long-running investigation into an attempted military coup and claims that the government has used the case to intimidate sections of the press.
"These criticisms upset us very much," he said, adding that a total of 27 journalists had been convicted and jailed for crimes, including membership of terrorist organisations, coup plotting and sexual harassment. "Would that be accepted as normal in your country?"

Cairo, Asharq Al-Awsat Independent Arab and Libyan sources have informed Asharq Al-Awsat that Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi is seeking to convince the coalition forces to accept a deal that is being secretly discussed between Gaddafi delegates and a number of Arab and American parties. This deal would see Gaddafi stepping down from power, only to be replaced by his son Saif al-Islam, with a deadline being put in place for a peaceful transition of power.quote:A well-informed Libyan source told Asharq Al-Awsat that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi has held a number of secret meetings with officials in the French and British governments, discussing the idea of his replacing his father for a transitional period of between 2 3 years, in return for a comprehensive ceasefire and negotiating with the anti-Gaddafi rebels.

The rebel forces are gaining strength and momentum, moving westwards towards the center of Gaddafi's support in Sirte, and the Libyan capital Tripoli. The rebels have recently captured the cities of Ajdabiyah, Brega, and Ras Lanuf, and Gaddafi's aides are racing against time to prevent the inevitable toppling of the regime in the face of the rebels' momentum.
Asharq Al-Awsat learnt that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, who has not appeared in public for almost a week, has been in contact with officials in the US, British, and Italian governments, in an attempt to submit the above-mentioned plan. Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said that his country will present an alternative diplomatic plan to the British French plan, on London on Tuesday.
The Italian Foreign Minister said that NATO will take control of the Libyan operation no latter than Monday, saying "NATO will take over Sunday or Monday." He also revealed that he would be participating in a meeting of NATO members in London that is scheduled for Tuesday.
Frattini also revealed that he has spoken with Mahmoud Jibil, head of the Libyan National Transitional Council in Benghazi, who reassured him that the rebel council is committed to a united Libya, and will respect all of Libya's oil contracts.
Sources within the National Transitional Council also informed Asharq Al-Awsat that what is happening on the ground with regards to the conflict between the Gaddafi forces and the rebels, cannot be resolved by Saif al-Islam Gaddafi's plan [to replace his father], stressing that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi is nothing more than an extension of his father.
An official within the Libyan National Transitional Council told Asharq Al-Awsat that "this is just a new political maneuver, and we will not participate with this in any way, shape, or form. WASHINGTON The United States has undertaken the lion's share of coalition military sorties against Libya late Saturday and Sunday, despite NATO formally taking command of operations, Pentagon figures showed.
Of 167 sorties flown between 1930 GMT Saturday and 1500 GMT Sunday, more than half -- some 97 -- used US aircraft, the US Defense Department said.
That figure is only slightly less than the 62 percent of sorties flown by the US planes since Operation Odyssey Dawn got underway on March 19.
The latest Pentagon figures showed some 1,424 missions conducted during the operation so far as it imposes a United Nations Security Council-mandated no-fly zone over Libya.
The international coalition enforcing the no-fly zone, headed by the United States, Britain and France, has struck Kadhafi's defense and air capabilities and sought to protect Libyan civilians.
As rebels pushed towards Tripoli after nine days of Western bombings on Kadhafi forces, NATO ambassadors overcame objections from Turkey and France after days of tense talks and agreed to take control of the campaign.
"Our goal is to protect civilians and civilian-populated areas under threat of attack from the Kadhafi regime," declared NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

Al Jazeera says they've uncovered evidence of rape by Gaddafi forces; Libyan soldiers found with condoms and viagra in pockets.
Doctors in one of the Ajdabiya's main hospitals have told Al Jazeera English that they have treated women who were raped by Libyan soldiers over the past week and they have found viagra and condoms in the uniforms of dead Gaddafi soldiers.

BENGHAZI, Libya, March 27 (Reuters) - A Libyan woman who burst into a Tripoli hotel to show journalists injuries she blamed on Muammar Gaddafi's militia was first targeted by the authorities after a protest, her cousin said on Sunday.
Eman al-Obaidi entered a hotel where foreign journalists were staying on Saturday to show bruises and scars she said were caused by militiamen. After being intimidated by security men and hotel staff, she was bundled into a car and driven away.
Wadad Omar, who said she was her cousin, said Obaidi was originally from east Libya and was first arrested after taking part in a protest in the early days of the uprising in the western city of Zawiyah.
The revolt in Libya erupted in mid-February.
Omar said Obaidi was detained on her way back from Zawiyah to Tripoli, along with other women with her at that protest.
"There were other lawyers with her, and we don't have any information about them," Omar said, naming the three other women arrested as Naimaa, Amal, and Mona.
Omar said Obaidi was from the eastern city of Tobruk and was working for a tourism company in Tripoli when she was arrested.
Omar said the family did not know what had happened to Obaidi except for the little information they were able to glean from her sister's appearance on Libyan television on Sunday.
"(Obaidi's) sister went on television to say her sister is crazy," Omar said. "Muammar wants to prove to the world that she is insane. She (Obaidi's sister) is certainly under pressure from the government."
Residents in Benghazi staged a demonstration in support of Obaidi on Sunday, waving monarchy-era flags -- the adopted symbol of rebels -- and chanting as they marched through the city centre. "Eman, you are not alone," one placard read.

Food, music, late nights, women, marijuana, etc. After 3 days there were organized into a convoy and armed, and headed east, presumably towards Ajdabiyah. On this road trip some videos were being shared of previous days. The video is one such video.
At one point, they received an order to stop and immediately leave their vehicles and take cover. Minutes later the convoy was bombed entirely (by coalition). Some at the front of the convoy were fatally injured. It was apparently horrific. The majority volunteers were hysterical at what they saw. They had to walk for miles and miles back to sirt.
Back at sirt they regrouped and Moatasim Gaddafi gave a speech telling them they were brave and heroes (this is confirmation of the reports that Mutasm is in Sirt and is now supreme commander of the armed units). There was word that they were organizing another convoy to send. The contact who passed on the video was distraught. He didn't want to go. Apparently there were crying men begging not to go. His uncle is a general so he was able to be put on "messenger" duty and was sent to Tripoli, where he went straight home.
The gaddafi forces were making the prisoners say "we are aljazeeras dogs" as well as other things, so the media will perhaps find it interesting.

An account from an opposition fighter in Wadi al Ahmar [the Red Valley], 90-100km east of Sirte, indicates that pro-Gaddafi forces are "beyond the hills" of the valley.
He said that typically fighters will send scout teams up to 10km ahead of the main opposition force. The scouts will then report back to their commanders with the main force.

Reuters reports that a "steady stream of [opposition fighters] in 4x4 pick-ups mounted with machineguns" has been seen heading towards Sirte.
