Tripoli divided as Libyan leader clings to power

TRIPOLI, March 6 (Reuters) - Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi turned Tripoli into a mass celebration of his long rule on Sunday, but residents in one of its most restive neighbourhoods pledged to press on with their campaign to oust him.

The capital woke to the sounds of heavy machine gunfire on Sunday in what the government said was a celebration of its victory over anti-Gaddafi rebels in key cities across Libya.

At daybreak, thousands of Gaddafi supporters poured into the streets waving flags and firing assault rifles into the air.

In the working class Tajoura neighbourhood, flashpoint of anti-Gaddafi sentiment in the capital, people looked terrified as vans loaded with Gaddafi supporters sped past shouting "God, Muammar, Libya, nothing more"

Al Jazeera's Tony Birtley, on the road between Ras Lanuf and Bin Jawad, reports four airstrikes on the area, but that Gaddafi's troops have retreated as the armed opposition proceeds westwards along the coast.

This has gone so smoothly for the rebels, everyone is forced to ask: "When are Gaddafi's forces going to strike back?"

I think the people here are driven by enthusiasm more than experience. They do have some heavy weaponry- but many realistic people here are telling me that Sirte is a different ball game.

If that falls, there is little to stop them marching on to Tripoli - so Gaddafi is expected to put up a very strong fight there, just 100km to the west of here. And we have yet to see the full strength of Gaddafi's air power - the helicopter gunships and so on.

John McCain: Gadhafi Is 'Insane'

John McCain, R-Ariz., reiterated his call for a U.S.-backed no-fly zone over Libya this morning and called Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi "insane."

In calling for the no-fly zone, McCain told "This Week" anchor Christiane Amanpour, "We can't risk allowing Gadhafi to massacre people from the air, both by helicopter and fixed-wing [aircraft]."
