quote:Dutch great urges Red Bull to back Webber
Ex-Formula One driver Jos Verstappen has joined the growing number of experts who believe Red Bull must back Mark Webber's title ambitions.
While both Webber and German teammate Sebastian Vettel remain mathematical chances for this year's world championship, Red Bull is refusing to back the chances of one driver over another.
But with Webber just 11 points behind championship leader Fernando Alonso going into this weekend's penultimate grand prix in Brazil many feel his team must back him over Vettel.
The young German is 25 points behind Alonso and must finish ahead of the Spaniard at Interlagos to stay in the championship hunt.
Verstappen, Holland's most successful Formula One driver, threw his support behind the Australian in his column for Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.
"Purely mathematically, the German has a chance to be world champion. But the team really has to put everything behind Webber," the 38-year-old wrote.
"He (Webber) has a better chance of winning the title.
"If Red Bull are to win the title it is crucial that at this stage of the title race that they make a choice."
Verstappen went on to suggest Red Bull's perceived bias towards the younger Vettel may well be behind the team's reluctance to commit wholly to Webber.
"Of course it's a difficult position for Red Bull," Verstappen, who made 106 grand prix starts, wrote.
"Although they have never directly expressed a preference for Vettel, the whole world knows that the team bosses prefer the young German to his older Australian teammate."
Regardless of Red Bull's decisions, Alonso's boss Stefano Domenicali says Ferrari will have to be "very careful" to keep the two-time world champion on top.
The Italian says his team won't be risking everything for a win in Brazil, despite Alonso being the only driver who could claim the title before the final race at Abu Dhabi.
"It is unlikely to decide the (championship) outcome, but it will be a very important race," Domenicali said.
"If one were to lose valuable points here it would make Abu Dhabi a bigger call.
"The approach the team will adopt in these final weeks of the championship will be the right one, keeping in mind the strengths of our rivals, Red Bull and McLaren.
"We have seen how complicated the races have been throughout the season, which means we have to be very careful.
"We can expect to find that Red Bull is again very strong, while McLaren could have some more updates to be quicker still and we will be in the fight."

"I have never done anything for money!"quote:Why Bernie goes after the little teams
November 2, 2010 by joesaward
Bernie Ecclestone has launched yet another attack on the small teams in Formula 1, saying that they bring nothing to the show and saying that Richard Branson, in particular, should put some money into the sport. Branson’s involvement is limited in that Virgin Racing team is structured to use the Virgin brand, but without Virgin needing to pour vast sums of money into the F1 business. That is clever.
One can argue that a little negative comment helps to temper new organisations and if they cannot survive, then they do not deserve to be in Formula 1. This is a fair point, but it would perhaps be a little wiser to nurture some new generation teams, just in case some of the more established names fall out of bed, as several have threatened to do in recent years.
But is there more to it than that? Ecclestone’s attacks are so regular that there are some who think that there a financial motive involved.
The new teams are categorised in the Concorde Agreement as being “Column 3″ teams. This means that they are outside the usual structure of prize money payments, and will remain so until they manage to climb into the top 10. With nine established teams in 2010, one of the new teams is going to move up next year into Column 2. This will probably be Lotus. This will leave Virgin Racing and HRT in Column 3.
According to our sources the Concorde Agreement provides for a fund of $30 million to be paid to the Column 3 teams in each remaining year of the agreement (thus 2011 and 2012). This means that each team is entitled to receive $10 million, plus various other benefits relating to travel, including the cost of freight.
If the teams all disappear then the Formula One Group gets to keep the cash…
