Het is wel zo dat het zuiden van de VS niet bepaald geliefd is in Washington. Dat kan je heel erg goed merken als je er woont. Mississippi is de armste staat van de VS, alles wat zij hebben is de visserij en het tourisme aan de kust. Ik heb nog een beetje over die vulkaan zitten denken, en in feite klingt dat wel heel apart, maar zoveer ik kan zien, is er geen verschill tussen een gewoon olie reservaat, waar ze normaal gesproken in boren, en een olie reservaat waaruit zo een vulkaan kan ontstaan. Als de druk bij een olie reservaat hoog is (en dat is ie door de grote diepte en het veele methaan), gaat de olie ook mee naar boven, naar de zeebodem, en op de weg ernaartoe neemt het allemaal zand en steentjes mee, waardoor delen van het ruwe olie asfalt worden. Dat gedeelte is zo zwaar dat het op de zeebodem neerdaalt en dus zo een vulkaan trichter vormt. Methaan en de lichtere olie stijgt naar boven.
Dus als ik er zo over nadenk, als men zegt ze hebben een vulkaan geraakt, dan is dat mischien verwarrend. Ze hebben mischien in het diepe olie reservaat geboord, dat een natuurlijk vulkaan zou kunnen worden (of ooit is geweest) door de hoge druk en de hoeveelheid methaan maar het is op dat moment nog geen vulkaan, het is meer zo, dat het lek zelf nu een soort man-made vulkaan is.
Het lijkt er wel op dat door die grote druk van het reservaat ook meer zooi in de ruwe olie zit, steentjes, zand etc, waardoor het voor een gedeelte ook aslfalt kan vormen. Dat asfalt is waarom ze het "vulkaan" noemen, omdat het sommige eigenschappen van lava heeft, behalve dan, dat het niet zo heet is. Maar het vloeid op de zelfde manier en wordt hard in formaties die wij verder alleen van afgekoelde lavastromen kennen.
Hmmja... dus ik denk dat het woord "vulkaan" een beetje misleidend is en mensen die er niets over lezen en alleen dat woord lezen gelijk lava voor ogen hebben. Maar eigenlijk betekend het alleen dat de olie waarschijnlijk niet uit zich zelf zo snel gaat stoppen en ook dat er groote hoeveelheden methaan in het water terecht komen, en dat betekend minder zuustof in het water, wat weer betekend minder leven...
Wat ik dan ook heel erg interessant vind is dat ze bij de oude (dode?) aslfalt vulkanen (die trichters) een heel ekosystem hebben ontdenkt, waar wetenschappers eerst dachten dat het onmogelijk zou zijn om leven te vinden. Maar er zijn microoranismen bij voorbeeld, die van het methaan leven. De natuur blijft toch echt een wonderik bedoel, die vulkanen in de golf van mexico betekenen ook dat er veel vaker, al voor de olieplatvormen, olierampen waren, maar de natuur heeft zich altijd hersteld en geleerd ermee om te gaan.
Alleen jammer dat ze all 2 maanden dat Corexit aan het sprooeien zijn, want volgens mij kan de natuur daar minder goed mee omgaan dan met methaan en ruwe olie...
Overigens had ik laatst wel gelezen dat de natuur al antwoord had gevonden op Monsanto's gentech geklier. Dus het kan best. We moeten Gaia alleen wat langer de tijd geven om corexit-probleem op te lossen....

BP is al weken het risico van de aanspoelende olieresten op de Amerikaanse kust aan het minimaliseren. Er is helemaal geen risico voor de gezondheid, maar toch zoeken veel mensen hun arts op nadat ze in de buurt van de getroffen stranden geweest zijn. Vooral onzichtbare olieresten blijken gevaarlijk.
Ryan Heffernan is een vrijwilliger in Santa Rosa. Toen ze een zak met olieresten zag drijven, liep ze naar medewerkers van BP om te vragen of ze konden ingrijpen. "Sorry mevrouw, we mogen niet in de oceaan gaan. Die is besmet", zeiden ze. Ryan ging dan maar zelf het water in om de zak te halen. Een dag eerder had ze ook al in het water gezwommen. Toen waren er nog helemaal geen tekens van olie te bespeuren. "Ik wou een laatste keer gaan zwemmen voor de olie zou toeslaan", zei ze. Een dag na het incident met de zak moest Ryan naar de dokter omdat haar benen vol uitslag stonden.
Onzichtbare kwallen
Kleine olieresten en chemische stoffen van BP zijn niet altijd zichtbaar, maar toch kunnen ze de gezondheid schaden. Waarom wagen zoveel mensen zich dan toch nog in het water? En waarom is er geen verbod uitgevaardigd om in die zones te gaan zwemmen? Een reporter van de Huffington Post zag hoe medewerkers van BP op Pensacola Beach olieresten en zand aan het wegscheppen waren. Toen de zon opkwam lieten ze het strand achter en even later kwamen families met kinderen zwemmen in de oceaan.
Personeel van BP draagt bovendien speciale schoenen om het contact met de olie te vermijden. De beelden van badgasten op diezelfde stranden lijken dan toch wel heel vreemd. Vooral omdat het verhaal van Ryan geen geïsoleerd incident blijkt te zijn. Veel mensen keerden met huidklachten terug nadat ze in de oceaan gingen zwemmen. Ze omschrijven het als beten van "onzichtbare kwallen". Vrijwilligers die schildpadden willen redden, melden voortdurend dat ze last hebben van uitslag en zelfs bronchitis.
