Iran Navy detects US nuke sub in PG

quote:
Iranian naval forces have detected a US nuclear submarine in the Persian Gulf waters, amid growing concerns over the safety of one of the most important energy routes in the world.

An Iranian patrol on Thursday spotted the nuclear-armed and -powered submarine in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, which allows the passage of 90 percent of the oil produced by Persian Gulf states to Asia, the US and Western Europe.

There are currently 48 logistic and 18 combat US vessels in the Persian Gulf waters, among them the USS-Eisenhower aircraft carrier.

Experts say aside from the risk of ecologically disastrous accidents, the presence of a nuclear submarine in a narrow waterway also poses a threat of nuclear pollution.

In 2009, a US Navy Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered submarine collided with a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock in the strait. The incident caused a spillage of nearly 25-thousand gallons of diesel fuel.

In 2007, a submerged US nuclear vessel collided with a huge Japanese crude tanker in the south of the strait.

The US is yet to comment on the report.

According to the report, an Iranian company has purchased control systems from one of Germany's leading electronic manufacturers. The deal was negotiated with a Dubai trading company, which in turn sold Iran a range of electronic equipment for use at its enrichment facility, the British website reported.

The report comes amid growing concerns that though Iran claims its nuclear program has only peaceful aims, Tehran is in fact working toward manufacturing nuclear weapons.

According to the Sunday Telegraph, Iran has smuggled German computers, controllers, communication cards and cables into Iran. The equipment was sold to Iran via a Dubai intermediary, using false certificates for companies in Asia, without the knowledge of the German manufacturer.

Last month, U.S. and United Nations officials launched an investigation into Tehran's acquisition of components restricted for sale to Iran under UN resolutions. The investigation, which covered several Western companies suspected of violating said resolutions has now been expanded to Dubai, already under American pressure to prevent the transfer of technology to Iran.

Ahmadinejad: Israel's annihilation near

At a gathering of worshipers in Istanbul Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke to an enthusiastic Turkish audience saying “Zionist regime’s attack against Gaza Peace Flotilla was a big step of that regime and its masters towards death and total annihilation” Islamic Republic News Agency reported.
The audience in addition to chanting “Allah-o-Akbar” shouted "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" during Ahmadinejad’s presence.

The Iranian president said he appreciated the Turkish government and nation, particularly the worshipers among them and described the two nations of Iran and Turkey as “great, civilization maker, brother nations.”

The Iranian president said that the two nations are the “standard bearers of humanity and moralities” emphasizing, “Everyone should know that the relations between the two countries are friendly brotherly and deep rooted today and that the two countries would stand side by side of each other till to end of the line.”

Ahmadinejad continued with, “The future of the two countries is bright and their victory in campaign against the oppressors is near at hand, after which we would all attend the celebrations for our victory.”

Israeli officials said on Monday the two ships the Iranian Red Crescent announced it would be sending to Gaza would not be allowed to reach their destination.

One Diplomatic official said “If we didn’t let an Irish ship reach Gaza, we are certainly not going to let Iranian ships pass”.

The Israeli official explained that, “The Iranian regime has called for Israel to be wiped off the map and has a proven track record of supplying dangerous weapons to Hamas and Hizbullah,” “Obviously, any shipment from Iran to Gaza would be a major concern.”

Report: Egypt refuses to stop Iranian ships

Kuwaiti paper says Egypt denied Israeli request to prevent Gaza aid ships from passing through Suez Canal

Published: 06.18.10, 11:14 / Israel News

Egypt rejected Israel's request not to assist the Iranian ships slated to sail to the Gaza Strip in the coming days, Kuwaiti paper al-Dar reported on Friday. The report was not confirmed by any official Egyptian elements.

Facts regarding the Iranian flotilla to Gaza are vague and shrouded in mystery. As of yet, it is unclear whether the ships have already set sail, and the number of people on deck is unknown.

At the start of the week Iranian state radio reported that the first ship has already set sail and that another ship was slated to leave this weekend.

According to the Iranian Red Crescent, the ships are carrying humanitarian aid including gifts for the children of Gaza, baby cloths, toys and dolls.

The Kuwaiti report, which cites Egyptian sources, said the officers of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak appealed to Egyptian Intelligence chief Omar Suleiman and asked he prevent the passage of Iranian ships through the Suez Canal.

The Israeli sources argued in their request that Iran supports the Hamas organization, which is a terror group that also operates against the Egyptian authorities.

According to the paper's sources, the Egyptians rejected the Israeli request, and stressed in their response that, due to the international agreements on movement through the Suez Canal, Egypt cannot prevent any ship from sailing through it, unless it is a ship belonging to a state that is at war with Egypt, which is not the case with Iran.

Iran bars two U.N. inspectors in nuclear dispute
By Hossein Jaseb and Sylvia Westall – 1 hr 12 mins ago

Reuters – Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad speaks during a news conference at the Shanghai World Expo site, …

TEHRAN/VIENNA (Reuters) – Iran has barred two U.N. nuclear inspectors from entering the Islamic Republic, increasing tension less than two weeks after Tehran was hit by new U.N. sanctions over its disputed atomic program.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) rejected Iran's reasons for the ban and said it fully supported the inspectors, which Tehran has accused of reporting wrongly that some nuclear equipment was missing.

"The IAEA has full confidence in the professionalism and impartiality of the inspectors concerned," spokesman Greg Webb said in an unusually blunt statement which described the IAEA's report issued last month as "fully accurate".

Also on Monday, U.S. lawmakers seeking to tighten Washington's own sanctions, announced a draft law that would effectively deprive foreign banks that do business with banned Iranian institutions of access to the U.S. financial system.

Iran, which has declared the two inspectors persona non grata, made clear it would still allow the Vienna-based U.N. watchdog to monitor its nuclear facilities, saying other experts could carry out the work.

"Inspections are continuing without any interruption," Iran's IAEA envoy Ali Asghar Soltanieh told reporters in Vienna.

"(But) we have to show more vigilance about the performance of the inspectors to protect the confidentiality," he said, criticizing alleged leaks by inspectors to Western media.
Ties between Iran and the IAEA have become more strained since Yukiya Amano took over as head of the agency in December.

The Japanese diplomat has taken a tougher approach on Iran than his predecessor Mohamed ElBaradei, with the IAEA saying in a February report that Iran could be trying to develop a nuclear-armed missile now, and not just in the past.

Iran accused Amano of issuing a misleading report.

Ali Akbar Salehi, head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, said Tehran had asked the IAEA to replace the two inspectors, the ISNA news agency reported.

Iran has the right to refuse certain inspectors under its agreement with the agency, which has around 200 people trained to conduct inspections in the Islamic state. Iran denied entry to a senior U.N. inspector in 2006.

IAEA BACKLASH?

But if Iran continues to refuse inspectors it could face diplomatic retaliation at the IAEA, whose 35-nation Board of Governors reported Iran to the U.N. Security Council in 2006 over its nuclear secrecy and lack of full cooperation.

"It is worrisome that Iran has taken this step, which is symptomatic of its longstanding practice of intimidating inspectors," U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said. "This will not ... encourage the international community to believe that Iran's program is peaceful in nature."

Theodore Karasik of the Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis said he believed Iran's expulsion of the inspectors was in retaliation for sanctions.

The United Nations Security Council on June 9 imposed a fourth round of punitive measures on Iran because of nuclear activity the West suspects is aimed at developing the means to make bombs. Tehran says its nuclear program is peaceful.

Iran has branded the U.N. sanctions, which among other things target its banking and shipping sectors, "illegal".

Besides the U.N. sanctions, the United States and Europe are working on tightening measures of their own.

Senator Chris Dodd and Representative Howard Berman issued a joint statement announcing a proposal for a bill which they hope will be passed by early next month banning foreign banks that work with banned Iranian organizations.

"The act presents foreign banks doing business with blacklisted Iranian entities a stark choice -- cease your activities or be denied critical access to America's financial system," according to a summary of the proposed legislation.

IRAN CRITICISES IAEA REPORT

The IAEA's report in May said some nuclear equipment had gone missing from a Tehran site where Iran had started research on production of uranium metal, which has civilian and weapons uses. Iran denied equipment had disappeared from the laboratory and said inspectors had wrongly described the work there.

"We gave documents, pictures, everything, which proved this was a mistake," Soltanieh said. He said Iran had banned the two IAEA inspectors for an "utterly untruthful" report.
"We asked that they would not ever send these two inspectors to Iran and instead assign two others," he added.

Last month's IAEA report also showed Iran pushing ahead with higher-level uranium enrichment and failing to answer questions about possible military dimensions to its nuclear activity.

Despite the escalating dispute, Brazil's Foreign Minister Celso Amorim said in Vienna he still hoped a plan for Iran to part with some of its nuclear material could serve as the basis for further talks with Tehran.
Western powers have voiced deep misgivings about a plan brokered by Brazil and Turkey in May for Iran to send abroad 1,200 kg of its low-enriched uranium in return for reactor fuel.

"In my opinion I think sanctions make it more difficult, not easier. But I don't think they make it impossible," Amorim said.

ISRAEL 'PLOTS TEHRAN RAID'
Posted on » Saturday, June 26, 2010

MANAMA: Israel is massing warplanes in the Caucasus for an attack on Iran, it was revealed yesterday.

Preparations are underway to launch the military attack from Azerbaijan and Georgia, reports our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej, quoting military sources.

Israel was, in fact, training pilots in Turkey to launch the strike and was smuggling planes into Georgia using Turkish airspace, they said.

However, Turkey was unaware of Israel's intention of transferring the planes to Georgia, the sources said.

The unexpected crisis between Israel and Turkey following an Israeli commando raid on an aid flotilla bound for Gaza Strip hit Israeli calculations.

Azerbaijan-based intelligence units, working under the cover of technicians, trainers and consultants, have helped with the preparations, the sources said.

Military equipment, mostly supplied by the US, was transported to a Georgian port via the Black Sea.

Georgian coastguard and Israeli controllers are co-operating to hide the operations from Russian vessels, said the sources.

They point out that according to Israel, it will not be in a position to launch a strike on Iran without using bases in Georgia and Azerbaijan due to the limited capabilities of its nuclear submarines stationed near the Iranian coast.

Meanwhile, Iran's Press TV reported that a very large contingent of US ground forces had massed in Azerbaijan, near the Iranian border. The independent Azerbaijani news website Trend confirmed the report.

Those reports came just days after the Pentagon confirmed that an unusually large fleet of US warships had indeed passed through Egypt's Suez Canal en route to the Gulf. At least one Israeli warship reportedly joined the American armada.

Press TV also quoted Iranian Revolultionary Guard Brigadier General Mehdi Moini as saying that the country's forces are mobilised and ready to face Israelli and American "misadventures" near its borders.

* Iran last night said it has cancelled plans to send an aid ship to the Gaza Strip as Israel "had sent a letter to the UN saying that the presence of Iranian and Lebanese ships in the Gaza area will be considered a declaration of war on that regime and it will confront it," Irna said.
