Chandhok, who is known to have substantial sponsorship backing, much like J-Lo himself, was in the frame for the seat, though recent reports seemed to suggest that the team were aiming for a deal with Lopez.

However, rumours persist that Lopez might still be taken on by the financially-troubled team, with Bruno Senna being ditched on the eve of the new season.

Campos team principal Colin Kolles simply told the BBC that their driver line-up would be "announced soon".

Chandhok, who won an underwhelming two of his 60 GP2 races across the last three years, had also been linked with a role with the Stefan GP team, but now seems set to drive for the Spanish team.

Meanwhile Lopez, who is backed by a reported $8 million of sponsorship, could potentially still be signed as a reserve driver for the team should they keep Senna as the team leader.

Chris Goodwin, Senna's manager, was quoted by the Beeb as saying: "There's no reason to think Bruno won't be part of it. It's clear as far as we're concerned. He signed a contract in October and he'll be in the car this season."

Chandhok and Senna are former team mates from their GP2 days, with the pairing driving for the iSport team in 2008.

US F1 shareholder Chad Hurley and Stefan GP boss Zoran Stefanovich are trying to put together a deal that will see their teams join forces and make it to the first race in Bahrain, sources have confirmed.

Hurley has given up on a possible deal with Colin Kolles and Campos to pursue the Stefan talks, and thus the logical scenario of a team with no car linking up with a team with no entry finally appears likely to unfold.

The FIA will in theory have no problem in allowing Stefan onto the Bahrain grid if such a deal takes place before the start of the season. It would also support a name change, although other F1 stakeholders would also have to agree.

Life will be much easier for the FIA and its new president Jean Todt if a merger does go ahead. The alternative scenario – the cancelling of the US F1 entry and a new bid process – would be far more complicated legally.

Meanwhile Jacques Villeneuve is on standby and will be willing to sign up as team mate to Kazuki Nakajima, should the team get an entry.

However we understand that US F1 founders Ken Anderson and Peter Windsor are not amenable to such a deal, and still wish to pursue their dream of fielding an American car. However, since Hurley owns a significant stake in the team – and has more funds to put in – he is presumably in the driving seat, and that may ultimately enable him to push the merger through.

In addition the visit of Charlie Whiting to Charlotte on Wednesday has given the FIA a clearer picture of what is going on there, and the governing body may now be in a position to force the issue and perhaps give Anderson and Windsor no alternative but to do a deal.

There could be more for Stefan GP to gain than just an entry. Stefan already has a base in Belgrade, Serbia and also has a foothold at the Toyota factory in Cologne. However the US F1 facility in Charlotte could still be of use as a manufacturing base. It may prove more economical to have parts made in the USA than by Toyota.

Ultimately there’s also a question of the 2011 car, which won’t necessarily be a Toyota product. US F1 also has access to the Windshear wind tunnel facility. If the Charlotte facilities are of use to Stefan then clearly jobs could be secure there.

Sources say that one Toyota/Stefan chassis is ready in Cologne, but the second is not yet complete, and a total lack of spares back-up will make the early races difficult, to say the least. Not surprisingly Stefan has not been in a hurry to encourage Toyota to build a lot of spares until the entry is confirmed.

The engine will not be badged as a Toyota, although the company will send a handful of fulltime staff members to races to support it. They are likely to be the only current Toyota employees to travel to the races with Stefan.

Alonso says Ferrari ready for Bahrain

Fernando Alonso says Ferrari is 100 per cent ready for the Bahrain Grand Prix after completing his pre-season testing in Barcelona on Friday.

The two-time champion, joining the Italian squad this year, had a strong day at the Catalan circuit, finishing as second quickest behind the Williams of Nico Rosberg.

Alonso has now completed his on-track work before the first race of the season, as team-mate Felipe Massa will take over from tomorrow for the final two days of testing.

The Spanish driver said Ferrari is as well prepared as it could have been.

"I don't know," he told Spanish reporters when asked if he had a winning car. "What's clear is that we have done a great job. The car has worked well during all the pre-season, and I was lucky with my days because I had a lot of dry days.

"We made a list of things before we began testing and today we checked the final item, so I think we arrive in Bahrain having done all we could have done, with the homework done. We'll see what happens.

"We don't know how fast we are compared to our rivals, but I think we will extract 100 per cent of our potential."

Alonso insisted the F10 is the best Formula 1 car he has ever driven, although he admitted that did not mean it will be the strongest car this year.

"What I say I usually say it because that's what I think and I can say it again," he added. "It's the best car I've ever driven, but that doesn't mean that is the best car on the grid.

"It's the best car I've ever had but it's impossible to know if there's a better car until the first races, but I'm quiet, and very happy with how February has gone."

The Spaniard said his team had completed all the preparations and that he had no concerns for the first race.

"We have simulated a full weekend and the car has responded well. I have no worries ahead of Bahrain."

Schumacher rules out early victories

Michael Schumacher says that Mercedes GP's performance is still not where the team wants it to be after his first day on track at the final pre-season test.

The seven-time world champion finished the day seventh fastest at Barcelona, and while he admitted that the team had not tried any low-fuel running, he repeated his claim from the first test at Valencia that Mercedes will not be able to win races early in the season.

"At the moment we are not perfectly in the position we would like, probably to be competitive enough to win the first races," Schumacher told reporters on Friday.

"But we are working hard, the season is long, and the main issue is not to be too far off. This is very difficult to judge right now, the real picture."

Despite the apparent lack of pace from his car, Schumacher added that he had settled in well with the team that won both world championships as Brawn last year.

"We are working very well together, it has taken very little time to get on with everybody," he said. "They are very good guys, it's very professional and a good atmosphere.

"But we have to prove ourselves on the track. Testing is one thing, racing is another thing."

Ze keken specifiek naar de diffuser en ik kan me goed indenken waarom Ferrari zo reageert. Ze hebben er immers veel werk geld en tijd ingestoken, en hebben geen zin dat McLaren ze na-aapt.
