Bahrain unveils new layout for F1 race

The Sakhir circuit hosts the first race of the season on March 14 and, with an expanded grid of up to 26 cars set to take part, race bosses have opted to use an existing extra loop for this year's event.

The new track will turn left shortly after Turn 4, the right hander at the top of the hill following the first sequence of turns.

There will then be a sequence of five turns before the cars head back to the original circuit. There will then be a left-right kink before a tight hairpin returns the cars onto the main track. The new layout increases the circuit length from 5.412km circuit to 6.299km.

Zayed R. Alzayani, Chairman of the Bahrain International Circuit, said: "The loop was completed in 2006 as part of the built-in evolution of the venue for competitors and fans.

"We gave it its debut with the inaugural 24 Hour Race of Bahrain that same year where it proved extremely successful, and with the changes to the regulations, the teams and the driver line-ups in Formula 1 this year it is the perfect time to evolve the circuit with this new challenge and new overtaking opportunities."

Formula One points system set to change again

STUTTGART, Germany, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Formula One teams have agreed to change the scoring system for the second time in two months to increase the reward for race winners and encourage overtaking.

The governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) said last month that the scoring system would be extended to the top 10 drivers this season, rather than eight, with race winners handed 25 points instead of 10.

However team leaders told Reuters on Monday that a further adjustment had now been agreed by them at a meeting last week, subject to official approval.

Instead of allocating the points in a 25-20-15-10-8-6-5-3-2-1 format the proposal was to distribute them 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1.

"I think there is some tuning of the middle range of the points system," said Mercedes GP principal Ross Brawn at the presentation of the team that has replaced his champions Brawn.

"There was a bit of a disparity in the gaps. It has to be ratified by the F1 commission but that's the proposal."

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh, attending the Mercedes launch, told Reuters he was not personally convinced by the change but was willing to go along with it.

"We've got to go the world motor sport council meeting next Monday to see the outcome," he said

"I personally believe that changing the points won't make a radical difference and therefore I am fairly relaxed if there is strong opinion about tuning these points.

"The original idea (was) that if you increase the incentive to overtake, then drivers will try harder. Certainly most of the young drivers that I see in Formula One are trying quite hard anyway, so I'm not absolutely convinced.

"But at the same time we have got to be willing to change."

Whitmarsh felt the decision to ban refueling would in itself encourage overtaking because cars would not be running with different fuel loads and drivers would not hold off in the hope of getting ahead at the pitstops.

"Now there will be an incentive throughout the whole race to overtake because you will not have variable fuel loads occurring," he said. "I think people will be pushing harder in the early stages of a race to get past."

Inderdaad ja ik vond dit van Mercedes GP al met al een beetje lullige presentatie, door de belichting is er ook geen goede foto gemaakt, het lijkt wel of de witte Brawn verf nog door de zilveren lak heen schijnt

Ecclestone bevestigt problemen Campos en USF1
Bernie Ecclestone heeft toegegeven dat Campos Meta en USF1 moeite hebben om het budget voor 2010 rond te krijgen. Die geruchten gingen al een tijdje, maar als Bernie het zegt, is het waar.

Ecclestone gelooft echter niet dat het ten koste zou gaan van het imago van sport als die teams de grid niet halen. "Campos en het Amerikaanse team hebben problemen", zei hij tegen The Mirror. "Financiële problemen, niet technische. Maar de Formule 1 heeft lange tijd niet zo stevig in zijn schoenen gestaan."

Toch wel verontrustend. Zullen deze teams het seizoen volmaken? Gaan we extremere vormen van pay-drivers krijgen (bv comeback van Mazzacane. )? Ik hoop dat ze gewoon kunnen blijven, hoe meer teams hoe beter.

ik vind dat nog steeds een rare regel...

ik vond Gaston Mazzacane niet eens zo heel erg. Riccardo Rosset, Taki Inoue of Yuji ide waren toch wel een slagje erger.

Ik verwacht minder. De meesten zullen de meeste races met 1 stop doen. Afgelopen seizoen konden beide compounds het al een halve race volhouden. Als dat nu nog steeds kan met de dubbele hoeveelheid benzine hebben ze aan een stop genoeg (eerste de harde, dan de zachte). Op sommige circuits hebben de banden misschien iets meer te lijden en worden het er twee.

Ik vraag me af of de banden het nog uithouden zo lang. Bij de start zijn de auto's ruim 100 kilo zwaarder dan vorig jaar.

We zullen het wel zien denk ik

Vind het zelfs schandalig dat ik niet uit m'n bed moet komen Hoort een beetje erbij om zo rond 4 uur op te moeten staan voor de eerste GP van 't jaar

Edit: En die livery, in m'n eerste indruk vond ik 'm wel gaaf. Nu ik 'm nog eens heb bekeken met die HQ pic moet ik toch zeggen dat ik 'm al wat gewoontjes vind
