Renault aims to be back fighting for championship titles again by 2011 according to the team's acting principal Bob Bell.

The future of Renault's Formula 1 team was secured in mid-December when a deal to sell a large stake in the team to businessman Gerard Lopez's Genii Capital was agreed, ending weeks of uncertainty over the French manufacturer's continuation in the sport.

Now, after a turbulent 12 months for the outfit - which included an uncompetitive and winless 2009 season and the race-fixing scandal that forced team principal Flavio Briatore and technical chief Pat Symonds to resign – Bell says Renault can now focus on building a multi-year strategy to return it to the front of the grid.

"The real target for us is to build for 2011 and a championship campaign," Bob Bell told AUTOSPORT before Christmas. "But we have realistic expectations for 2010.

"We are not going to produce a car that catapults us to the front because F1 is very competitive. But our 2010 expectations are to run towards the front and challenge for the top three."

Bell revealed that work on Renault's 2010 contender never halted while the team's future hung in the balance, but added that the security that the Genii deal brings to the project has boosted the staff working in the factory.

"This is nothing but positive for the team," he said. "It has ended all of the concerns that the staff had and gives a secure base for the future.

"There is a multi-year commitment and a very sensible strategy. It's a win-win situation for both Renault and its partners, and is a big step forward."

De laatste dagen gaat het gerucht dat Ralf Schumacher in gesprek zou zijn met Scuderia Toro Rosso. De Duitser wenste zelf niet in te gaan op de geruchten, maar teambaas Franz Tost heeft al laten weten dat er geen sprake van contact is tussen de coureur en het team.

"Ik weet niets van deze geruchten, ze zijn absoluut niet waar. De geruchten zijn nonsens. Dat is alles wat ik erover kan zeggen ", vertelde Tost aan het Duitse Auto, Motor und Sport.

Toro Rosso heeft alleen nog Sébastien Buemi bevestigd als coureur. Jaime Alguersuari heeft naar eigen zeggen wel een contract voor 2010, maar is nog niet bevestigd.

The seven times world champion is building up to a dramatic comeback at the Bahrain Grand Prix and according to Bild and Gazetta dello Sport he will have limited time to test the Mercedes car before the first event. As it’s Sunday I’ve not been able to call the team to verify, but I will do so.
The schedule calls for just four tests and Bild reckons that these are as follows:
February 1-3 in Valencia
February 10-13 in Jerez
February 17-20 in Jerez
February 25 to 28 in Barcelona
These are all one car tests so the driving will have to be shared with Nico Rosberg. There are a total of 15 days, which means, assuming reasonable reliability, both drivers should notch up somewhere around 2,000 miles of testing before the first race. Mercedes boss Norbert Haug is quoted as saying, “The tests will be divided equally between the two drivers.”
Incidentally, I’m interested to see what Mercedes will call this car. What will the type designation be? All previous Mercedes Grand Prix cars started with a “W” – as in W154. Perhaps the W110 – to designate F1 and the year 2010? More details will emerge this month, meanwhile the FOTA group launch idea has been shelved.

AMSTERDAM - Pedro de la Rosa is dichtbij een terugkeer als Grand Prix-coureur.

De ervaren Spanjaard wordt volgens de Zwiterse krant Blick de tweede rijder van het Sauber-team.
Teambaas Peter Sauber verkondigde afgelopen zondag in de Zwitserse media al dat hij een 'ervaren tweede rijder' heeft gecontracteerd. Blick meldt maandag dat het gaat om De la Rosa.

De la Rosa past met zijn 39 jaar, 72 Grand Prix-starts en vele kilometers aan testervaring bij McLaren-Mercedes ruim in dat profiel.

De Spanjaard stond voor het laatst aan de start tijdens de Grand Prix van Brazilië in 2006. In 2000 was De la Rosa teamgenoot van Jos Verstappen bij Arrows. In totaal reed hij in zijn carrière 29 WK-punten bij elkaar.
