This Sunday, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band will wrap up their two-year tour by performing their 1973 debut album Greetings From Asbury Park in its entirety (stick with Rolling Stone for a full report). After that, Springsteen's next moves are unclear. His manager, Jon Landau, says the only plans for 2010 are the release of the long-delayed Darkness on the Edge of Town box set and a DVD of the Working on a Dream tour. "The Darkness box set is 93 percent done," he tells RS. "It's absolutely fantastic and there are just some finishing touches that we need to turn our attention to and finalize and we'll get it out there." As for the Dream DVD, Landau says, "We're working on some different approaches to a DVD for this tour. We'll release it sometime fairly soon, post-Christmas." The Darkness box will likely contain a remastered edition of the disc, a new documentary about the making of the LP, as well as live footage from the 1978 tour. A handful of pro-shot shows circulate through the fan community, but there's no word on which concert will be brought out of the vaults for the set. In 2005, fans were stunned when a previously unknown complete performance from London in 1975 appeared on the Born to Run box set. The Darkness on the Edge of Town tour is widely regarded as the high water mark of Springsteen's live career.

There are no plans for another E Street Band album or tour next year. "We just had back-to-back tours and back-to-back records," Landau says. "That's never happened before, so we're going to have substantial downtime at this point. The E Street Band does have an illustrious future, but I don't have anything more specific to tell you about next year except those two media projects that are on the horizon."

The E Street Band have mixed feelings about the tour coming to an end. "I really don't want the work to end, but I need to go home," says guitarist Nils Lofgren. "It's kind of an inherent level of homesickness that wears on you. I'm really looking forward to being home and actually unpacking my suitcase. It sat there with my dogs giving me dirty looks for two years."

Steven Van Zandt has similar feelings. "It feels very much like The Sopranos," he says. "Everybody was like, 'Well, we're extremely successful and still very high on the ratings,' but David Chase knew it was time to stop. In the end I agreed and I feel like it's the same thing here." He says he hasn't had any discussions with Springsteen about future work. "I'm always afraid to stop," he says. "You think, 'If we stop, can we get this thing going again?' After a year or two off, you find yourself at the bottom of Mt. Everest looking up and thinking, 'How are we gonna get there?' I will be surprised if we don't continue and if you ask me if I think we'll continue I'll certainly say yes. It's just a matter of what happens to everybody physically, beginning with Clarence [Clemons] I suppose. He may fantasize about retiring, but with all his ex-wives I doubt it."

Ook nog even mijn reactie op bovenstaand stuk. Ik denk dat het vooral mooie tijden voor de verzamelaar wordt. Het stuk zelf belooft mijns inziens weinig goeds en het enige concrete (buiten de aankondiging van de DVD's) waar over wordt gesproken is een flinke (E-Street) pauze...

Because the Night, Jungleland, Born To Run, Tom Joad, Higher and Higher, Just My Son, New York State Of Mind was ongeveer het uitgezonden rijtje als ik het me goed herinner. Ohja en die van Orbison..Maar volgens mij vergeet ik er nog wel een hoor. Maar Tom Joad was echt fenomenaal...Kende al een versie van hem met Morello, maar nu zo op groot scherm en bij zo'n gelegenheid...Geweldig. En het respect van Bruce voor Morello, geweldig.

Kan me herinneren dat Dancing In The Dark en No Surrender in 2000, in een country versie zijn gespeeld. Voeg daar nog een nieuwe plaat aan toe en je hebt een hele gave tour met The Sessions Band!!

'London Calling: Live In Hyde Park' conveys both the experience of being on-stage and the vast crowd experience of the festival environment. Viewers are able to see Springsteen spontaneously directing the E Street Band and shaping the show as it evolves.

The set list spans from 'Born To Run' era to 'Working On a Dream' and includes rare covers such as The Clash's "London Calling," Jimmy Cliff's "Trapped," The Young Rascals' "Good Lovin'," and Eddie Floyd's "Raise Your Hand." Springsteen also performs fan favorite "Hard Times (Come Again No More)," written by Stephen Foster in 1854. Brian Fallon from The Gaslight Anthem joins the band as a guest vocalist on Springsteen's own "No Surrender."

The concert earned rave reviews. The London Times called it "epic" and "a revved-up three-hour power drive through Springsteen's America." The Independent concurred, "He awed the 50,000-strong crowd. Drenched in sweat by the second number, tossing his guitars to the roadies with the vigour of a frontman a third of his age and jogging down a walkway to meet his fans and take their requests, Springsteen's intensity was staggering from first powerful vocal to final thrashed-out chord."

GRAMMY and Emmy Award-winning producer and editor Thom Zimny and director Chris Hilson, both members of Springsteen's video team dating back over a decade, oversaw the film. Audio was mixed by Bob Clearmountain.

Bonus material includes stunning footage of "The River" from Glastonbury, June 27; and the full music video for "Wrecking Ball," filmed at New Jersey's Giants Stadium.

Package nearing completion, its documentary to premiere next month
Just announced this morning, the documentary that Thom Zimny has been working on for the impending Darkness box will premiere at the 35th Toronto International Film Festival as a Gala screening in September. Zimny created the Wings For Wheels doc for the Born to Run 30th Anniversary box; his new film is titled The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town.

Speaking to IndieWIRE, festival documentary programmer Thom Powers says that The Promise draws on "a treasure trove of footage from the 1970s. You see all the twists and turns of the making of this album. And we're the first people to announce that this film even existed... It's been in the works for a couple years now in total secrecy. And we’re very proud to be presenting it."

The description of the film from TIFF.net: "The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town takes us into the studio with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band for the recording of their fourth album. Grammy and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Thom Zimny has collaborated with Springsteen on this documentary, gaining access to never before seen footage shot between 1976-1978, capturing home rehearsals and recording sessions that allow us to see Springsteen's creative process at work."

TIFF runs from September 9 - 19. According to the festival website, a confirmed schedule will be posted August 24. Tickets are available now.

Update: A Shore Fire press release confirms that "Bruce Springsteen, Jon Landau Management, and Columbia Records are working on completing a new package related to Darkness on the Edge of Town, which will include the new Thom Zimny film The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town. Further details will be announced when they are finalized." The statement also gives the date for the TIFF premiere as September 14.

Toronto Star movie critic Peter Howell writes that "The pick of the The Promise as a Gala selection almost guarantees that Springsteen will come to Toronto to introduce it to the TIFF audience."
