Ari Vatanen has gone to court to try and ensure the upcoming FIA presidential election is fair.
The former world rally champion is one of two candidates, former Ferrari boss Jean Todt being the other, in the running for the prestigious post.
Ahead of the start of the voting process he has applied to the Tribunal de Grande Instance de Paris to impose a number of measures for next Friday's election, following an exchange of letters with current president Max Mosley.
Vatanen had written to explain his concerns at the lobbying taking place behind the scenes by a number of FIA official on behalf of his rival Todt.
Mosley responded by referring Vatanen to a conversation that took place between them on July 3 when the latter asked for the support of the former.
The 68-year-old also asked for proof of any wrong-doing or defamation. The Finn responded by taking the matter to the courts, a move that has not impressed the FIA.
Statement
An FIA statement read: "Had Mr Vatanen troubled to examine the procedures in place, he would understand that these in fact already provide more safeguards than those he is asking the court to impose.
"The FIA is therefore at a loss to explain the purpose of this legal action, if not merely to generate further negative publicity and to attempt to raise doubts about the honesty of FIA staff.
"This is despite the fact that a large team of FIA personnel have worked continuously over recent months to ensure that the new FIA president is elected in a dignified and democratic way.
"The FIA have retained a public official (a Huissier de Justice) to supervise the electoral process and the count.
"On October 15 the FIA circulated a note to all voting members, outlining in detail the election process to be deployed and the role that the Huissier will play.
"This legal action follows a number of allegations made by Mr Vatanen to the media which attempt to call into question the integrity of the FIA's personnel and the FIA's election process.
"However, Mr Vatanen has not taken up an invitation to specify and substantiate his allegations."

quote:Former Renault boss Flavio Briatore will begin his fightback against a lifetime ban from motor racing on Monday when he takes the matter to the French courts.
Briatore is set to lodge papers at the Tribunal de Grand Instance in Paris to try and cancel the lifetime ban that was handed to him by the FIA as the result of his involvement in Renault's race-fix controversy at last year's Singapore Grand Prix.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Briatore stated that he believes the FIA had acted incorrectly in the way it dealt with its hearing into the race-fix case, and the punishment handed down.
"In this case, the FIA has been used as a tool to exact vengeance on behalf of one man," said Briatore in the statement. "This decision is a legal absurdity and I have every confidence that the French courts will resolve the matter justly and impartially."
Briatore has stated that the grounds for his action were that there was a delay in the issue of the summons, a failure to state the charges in advance and a lack of access provided to prosecution document and to the key witness.
Briatore also stated that there had been a 'breach of the natural rules of justice' including a lack of impartiality of the body passing judgement, the secret negotiation of the decision before the hearing and the granting of selective immunities.
He also claims that the FIA has abused its power by imposing a penalty on a non-licensee of the FIA, the disproportionate and illegal nature of an indefinite ban and the threat to refuse to renew FIA licences to any driver or entity involved with Briatore.
As well as trying to overthrow his punishment, Briatore is also demanding compensation for the damage caused to his reputation - with a report in the Journal du Dimanche suggesting he is seeking as much as one million euros.
If the judges in Paris rule that there is a valid case, then the matter could go to trial in around one month's time, with a decision possible before the end of the year.

quote:Williams will switch to Cosworth engines next season, AUTOSPORT has learned, after believing its prospects for success in 2010 are best served with the independent engine maker.
Although the Grove-based outfit came close to a deal with Renault, high level sources at the French car manufacturer have revealed that Williams has now informed the company that it is no longer interested in a tie-up for next year.
With Toyota already having confirmed that it is ending its customer supply deal at the end of this year, it means that Williams has now settled on a switch to Cosworth.
Williams is refusing to confirm its engine plans until after the end of the season, but its engineering director Patrick Head praised Cosworth's efforts in preparing for its return to Formula 1.
"They are certainly very committed to it and working hard," he said. "They have been one of the options but we are not stating where we cast our final hook in terms of what is available to us until after the final race of the season. But I think our design office know what they are designing for."
Sources claim that one of the key attractions for Cosworth is the fact that the engine supplier will be able to re-tune its powe runit until early next year - something no other manufacturer is able to do because of F1's engine freeze.
The tweaks could help ensure Cosworth's engine is competitive throughout 2010, which is why Red Bull Racing is also considering a switch to the power unit if it is unsuccessful in its bid to secure Mercedes-Benz power.
Head said that his team had chosen to finish its partnership with Toyota because it fancied a change of direction.
"We had a very good relationship with Toyota," he said. "We made a decision about two months ago that we wanted to go in a different direction and I think the reasons are not for public consumption.
"We haven't had any falling out so it's an amicable parting. There were a number of factors that caused us to make the decision but I don't think that the combination of the reasons we decided to make a change are not ones that we are prepared to share. But it was nothing that caused any shouting and screaming, we chose to change direction.
"Ross Brawn and the team showed that you can make an engine change on Christmas Eve and still produce a pretty competitive car but I don't think our design office would thank us for doing that and they will have a little longer than that to design the car around the engine."

en in ander nieuws:quote:Williams falls in line with FOTA over KERS ban
Despite the technology again appearing in the technical regulations for next year, the formula one teams association FOTA had reached a gentleman's agreement to drop KERS after the forthcoming season finale in Abu Dhabi.
The fiercely independent Grove based team Williams, however, was suspended by FOTA amid the recent breakaway war, and was therefore not technically bound by the other teams' pacts.
Moreover, the British squad - although not using KERS at all this season - has been a strong advocate of the energy recovery technology, jointly developing an electrical as well as an uniquely flywheel-based system.
Engineering director and co-owner Patrick Head told the German website motorsport-total.com that at the last meeting of the technical working group, Williams was the only team still wanting to use KERS in 2010.
After that, Williams was invited to re-enter the FOTA alliance.
"We were conscious that one of the conditions was that KERS is not permitted in 2010," the Briton said. "We expressed that we think it is the wrong decision, but accept the rules of the club."
McLaren want Kimi Raikkonen for 2010 Formula One season with Niko Rosberg keen on Brawnquote:"He was unfortunate," Ecclestone told Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo, "but the publicity generated by his death was so much...It was good for F1."
"It was a shame that we had to lose Ayrton, but it happened. He was very popular, but the actual event interested so many people who did not know about the sport, and increased interest in F1 because of it."

quote:Williams CEO Adam Parr has confirmed that the team is in no mood to shift their beliefs on the matter despite renewed efforts from other teams to force through the increase. The F1 grid is already set to expand from 20 to 26 cars next year, despite BMW's withdrawal, thanks to new teams from USF1, Lotus, Campos and Manor.
The old Hinwil-based BMW Sauber team has secured new backing from the mysterious Qadbak company, and is on the FIA's reserve list should a spot become available. The possibility of 14 teams for 2010 has been suggested by the FIA, but Williams, as well as Campos, are against the move. Rumours suggest that Campos have vetoed the move to keep the price tag of their grid slot lucrative, should they choose to sell-on their spot later in the year.
Parr insists that there Sir Frank Williams, the boss of the eponymous team, feels "very strongly" about the issue, and does not believe that 28 cars is logistically possible.
"Frank has been crystal clear on this," Parr shouted, "He feels very strongly about it, but he's not the only one. At the last FOTA meeting it was not the only team that raised concerns, and it was not the only team that voted against 14 teams."
Parr believes that no work has been carried out on planning for a potential increase to 28 cars, in terms of accommodating them in pit lanes throughout the world, as well as in terms of revenue share from commercial rights.
"First of all, nobody has done any work that I can see to show that there is space to accommodate 14 teams, 28 cars," Parr said angrily, "No one has discussed that, neither the FIA nor anyone else. Look at where we are now in Brazil. You couldn't possible get 28 cars and 14 teams here.
"And I'm sure that's true in Monaco and several other circuits. So once they've done that work, and the FIA has never suggested that 14 teams can be accommodated.
"I don't think it can be accommodated on the revenue side either, it's just not sustainable, and the FIA presumably believe that because they fought very hard this year to reduce the cost dramatically."
He added that the increase to 28 cars would necessitate a return to pre-qualifying, with some teams failing to make the grid, as the maximum grid size is still capped at 26 cars. This, according to Parr, means the move would not make financial sense to the unlucky cars that failed to get in to the race.
"No," he said in response to a question, presumably, "Because then people will start saying we need to pre-qualify, which is completely ludicrous. The idea, in this day and age, to have a team flying all the way to Melbourne or somewhere at massive expense, only to tell their sponsors that they are not going to appear on the grid. It's just ridiculous."
Meanwhile, Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali has said that the Italian team are in favour of the increase, saying: "It's very clear on our side. We feel it would be a shame to lose a team like Sauber that is on the podium. We all respect they have tradition, they have infrastructure. And I think we can agree for that kind of exception."
Ferrari also remain committed to three-car teams for the sport, meaning that the ideal future for Ferrari is some bizarre 42-car sport, but pointed out that they would only want BMW Sauber becoming the 14th team, otherwise 13 would suit them fine.
"If someone is not ready then I think it's going to stay with 13 teams, also because as we have said we like to think of a future with three cars per team, because we think it's the right way to look ahead," Domenicali added, "If it's only Sauber. And then if someone is leaving, then we go back to 13."
Backing up Domenicali's view that it would be sad to see Sauber go was Red Bull boss Christian Horner, though the caffeinated one also echoed Parr's concerns over logistics.
"Obviously you don't want to see any team disappear and it would be a great shame to see Sauber disappear," Horner weeped," Although you don't know if it's Sauber or something completely new.
"If you just look at the practical issues of a 14th team, look at the cramped conditions of the paddock, it's going to be tight enough with a 13th team. Look at qualifying somewhere like Monaco with all the logistics. That creates some practical issues. That's what's agreed though."
He added that Red Bull would prefer 13 teams, saying: "We hope a solution that would involve Sauber continuing would play out, but we would prefer 13 teams. We would first of all want to see how things panned out with all the new entrants. 26 cars, plus with some of the paddocks we go to, logistically we're already at the limit.
"If only Sauber had signed the Concorde Agreement when they had the chance, but such is life. It's been discussed briefly, but I guess it's not just us that are concerned about there being 14 teams. It's fantastic [the numbers are rising], but it's a massive challenge for the new teams to be there.
"And if we get to 13 teams next year then for the new teams to all be there in Bahrain, good luck and we hope they'll be there, but it's a massive challenge."
