Felipe Massa has undergone successful surgery at the AEK hospital in Budapest after crashing heavily during the qualifying session for the Hungarian Grand Prix. However, the Brazilian's condition remains critical.

"Massa's condition is serious and life-threatening but stable," summarized Peter Bazso, the hospital's medical director during a news conference late today local time.

Lajos Zsiros, the hospital's chief of surgery, and Bazso explained that they induced coma for Massa, given the seriousness of the injuries. The Brazilian driver is also on a respirator as a precautionary measure.

However, Ferrari spokesman Lucal Colajanni said there was no danger to Massa's life, describing such statements as "absolute nonsense."

The hospital is expected to provide an update on Massa's condition late on Sunday morning.

Massa crashed his Ferrari F60 heavily into the tire barriers near the end of the second qualifying segment. He appeared to have braked, black rubber streaks bearing out the action, but he never turned the wheel; no doubt he was knocked out momentarily, and went straight off the circuit at Turn 4 to crash heavily into a tire barrier. He sat slumped forward for before the medical team arrived to remove him from the car.

With replays indicating that he was likely hit by a dislodged rear spring from Rubens Barrichello's car, he suffered cuts above the right eye, a concussion as well as damage to the bones of his skull.

A Formula 1 rear spring, a standard part, typically weighs only between 700 and 800 grams (1.5 to 1.8 lbs), but the speed of the impact, likely close to 200 km/h (125 mph) combined with the spring's sharp extremities, greatly increases the potential damage from such an object.

Photographs taken immediately after the crash showed that the spring had broken through the helmet, bloodying and bruising the area around his left eye.

He was reported to be awake and agitated, though not necessarily entirely aware of his surroundings, in the track medical center. He was then airlifted to the hospital by helicopter, and arrived there at 3:20 PM local time. The surgery was started approximately one hour later after the diagnosis was completed.

Daar twijfel ik niet aan. Of beter gezegd; ik heb zeer goede hoop.

De nood-operaties zitten erop. De hersen-scans zullen wel erg snel gemaakt en geanalyseerd zijn. Morgen weten we ongetwijfeld het fijne ervan.

In het ergste geval is er een hersenbloeding. De eerste berichten uit het ziekenhuis waren dat z'n hersens niet beschadigd waren maar dat is een uitspraak die waarschijnlijk gedaan is na de eerste observatie van de schade aan z'n schedel. Bloedingen die door de G-krachten zijn ontstaan komen pas aan het licht na MRI-scans.

There seems to be some questions about the condition of Felipe Massa this evening. The Brazilian suffered a fracture to his skull in qualifying in Budapest and was flown by helicopter to hospital, where he had surgery. In F1 circles it was felt that Massa had had a very lucky escape but that his injuries were not serious. Both Ferrari and the FIA were saying the same things but the medical director of the hospital Peter Bazso said in a news conference that Massa’s condition was “life-threatening but stable.”

All serious head injuries can be considered life-threatening, particularly given the fact that bruising of the brain can cause dangerous pressures. However techniques to manage brain swelling have developed considerably. Understanding the extent of the problem is very important as the risk of death increases dramatically if no action is taken within four hours of the injury occurring. Reducing the pressure inside the skull is done with drugs and by placing the patient on a respirator and artificially hyperventilating him. This reduces the carbon dioxide content in the blood and as a result the brain vessels naturally reduce in size. In extreme cases the swelling can be relieved with an operation.

In Formula 1 there have been several drivers who have suffered such injuries, notably Martin Donnelly and Karl Wendlinger in the modern era. Back in the 1970s American Mark Donohue crashed heavily following a tyre failure in the morning warm-up before the Austrian Grand Prix. It initially seemed that he was only lightly injured, but he died three days later as a result of brain swelling. Technology has moved on considerably in the interim and in F1 circles there is hope that the reports of Massa’s condition have been exaggerated somewhat. The F1 doctors seemed to be none too worried about the situation, with Massa reported to have a small cut on his forehead, a skull lesion and concussion.

Rubens Barrichello visited Felipe in the circuit medical centre and said that “he was conscious, he was moving and he was very agitated with the fact that he had a cut on his head. With that, they sedated him for him to calm down, and then they moved him to hospital.”
