Hamburg - Motorsport's ruling body, the FIA, confirmed Thursday that Michael Schumacher will be granted the Formula One driving licence he needs if he is to race for Ferrari as Felipe Massa's replacement in next month's European Grand Prix in Valencia. Seven-time world champion Schumacher last raced in F1 at the Brazilian GP on October 22, 2006 but an F1 licence automatically runs out at the end of each year.

However, Schumacher qualifies under FIA Article 5.1.2a, which states that a driver can be issued a licence if he has competed in a minimum of 15 races in the previous three years.

Schumacher fulfills this requirement as the 40-year-old was in the Ferrari cockpit for all 18 races in the 2006 season.

The German Motorsport Federation (DMSB) has already applied for the licence to FIA, well within the 14-day deadline before the European GP on August 23.

Felipe Massa's personal doctor is confident the Brazilian driver will be able to leave hospital in less than ten days thanks to the progress he is making.

Further tests performance yesterday showed that the edema Massa had is now disappearing, and doctor Dino Altman continues to be upbeat about the Ferrari driver's progress.

"The edema involved only a tiny part of the brain. There's nothing to worry about, and no further operations are forecast. No permanent damage," Altman told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"He speaks normally, very well and more than before. He remembers everything starting from Saturday, except for the crash of which he can't remember anything. He knows what day is today, and he also knows that for two or three days he wasn't conscious.

"The way things are going, he will be able to leave even before ten days have gone by."

Massa was able to take his first steps yesterday, when he left the intensive care unit.

The doctor said Massa asked who won the Hungarian Grand Prix and that he remembered his qualifying position before his accident.

The Brazilian will be replaced by seven-time champion Michael Schumacher at the European Grand Prix next month.

FIA sets date for Renault appeal hearing

The FIA has announced that the International Court of Appeal will hear Renault's appeal against its suspension from the European Grand Prix on August 17.

The hearing will start at 10am in Paris, with the verdict due to be released on the afternoon of August 18.

Renault was punished after race stewards ruled that Fernando Alonso was knowing released from his pitstop without the wheel-nut retaining device securely in place and that Renault failed to take any action to stop the car leaving the pitlane.

They also found that Renault did not inform Alonso of the problem or ask him to stop, leading to his front right wheel falling off exiting Turn 9.

The stewards concluded that Renault had violated Article 3.2 of F1's Sporting Regulations, which insists that "competitors must ensure that their cars comply with the conditions of eligibility and safety throughout practice and the race."

Renault was also found to be in violation of Article 23.1, which calls for cars to be released from a pitstop only "when it is safe."

Should Renault's appeal be upheld, it will be allowed to participate in the European Grand Prix on August 23.

Michael Schumacher must get the green-light of a doctor before shifting his planned Valencia comeback into high gear.

The 40-year-old German, who retired in 2006 but has agreed to return to replace Ferrari's injured race driver Felipe Massa, is to undergo medical tests at the Bad-Nauheim sportklinic in Germany.

"It's only because Michael has worked so hard in recent months that all of this is possible," a confident Dr Johannes Peil, who treated the seven time world champion after he fell and injured his neck during a motorcycle crash earlier this year, told Bild newspaper.

It is also rumoured that Schumacher may attempt some testing miles prior to Valencia, despite the official ban on in-season circuit testing.

The Tagesspiegel newspaper reports that while Ferrari is not allowed to run the F60 except in a straight-line, Schumacher may instead turn to the Italian team's 'F1 Clienti' department, which operates former Grand Prix cars for wealthy enthusiasts.

Possible venues for Schumacher's test were named as Imola or Mugello.

Lewis Hamilton says it will be “an honour and a privilege” to race against Michael Schumacher when the German makes his return to Formula 1 competition.

Schumacher retired from the sport at the end of the 2006 season but is set to make a surprise comeback later this month in Valencia as a stand-in for injured Ferrari driver Felipe Massa provided he passes a fitness test.

Hamilton, who joined the F1 circus in 2007 and has therefore never raced against Schumacher, says he relishes the prospect of competing against the most successful driver in the sport’s history.

“I am excited by the possibility of Michael Schumacher's return to Formula 1, assuming it happens, but my thoughts are still with Felipe and his family following his terrible accident in Hungary,” said the reigning champion, who at 24 is 16 years younger than Schumacher.

“Michael is one of the sport’s greatest competitors and a legend in his own right and it would be great to compete against him.

De FOTA-teams hebben Ferrari toestemming gegeven om Michael Schumacher een dag in de F60 te laten testen. Dat bevestigde vice-president John Howett tegenover het Amerikaanse Speed TV. Of de test ook daadwerkelijk plaats zal vinden, hangt af van toestemming van Williams en Force India, die niet meer in de FOTA zitten.

Sinds dit jaar geldt een testverbod in de Formule 1 en mag er tussen de eerste en laatste race niet meer worden getest door de teams. Schumacher is opgeroepen als vervanger van de Braziliaan, maar heeft sinds zijn laatste race in 2006 slechts een handvol tests voor Ferrari gedaan.

Bovendien heeft Schumacher nog helemaal geen ervaring met de technische veranderingen van dit jaar, zoals KERS, de verstelbare voorvleugels en hij heeft sinds 1998 altijd in auto's met gegroefde banden geracet, terwijl dit jaar de slicks zijn teruggekeerd. Ferrari vroeg de overige teams dan ook om toestemming te geven toch een dag te mogen testen en de FOTA-teams hebben die toestemming gegeven. "We zijn er zeker van dat Ferrari dit sportieve gebaar zal respecteren", zei Howett tegen Speed TV.

Williams en Force India zijn echter geen leden meer van de FOTA sinds ze zich onvoorwaardelijk hadden ingeschreven voor het volgende seizoen. Als deze twee teams besluiten geen toestemming te geven, gaat het hele plan van Ferrari niet door. De reglementen stellen namelijk dat er alleen bij unanieme toestemming van alle deelnemers een uitzondering op een regel, in dit geval het testverbod, mag worden gemaakt.

Schumacher heeft vandaag (vrijdag) al in een F2007 op Mugello getest.

Felipe Massa will leave Hungary by a private plane on Monday, his personal doctor, Dino Altmann confirmed.

"Felipe continues to improve, he is doing very well, and we already decided to go back home on Monday to Brazil," Altmann told journalists on Friday at the AEK Hospital in Budapest, where Massa has been treated since his accident during the weekend of the Hungarian Grand Prix.

"He will fly to Sao Paulo."

Altmann said "there was no need" for the Brazilian to be taken to FIA Institute deputy president Gerard Saillant's clinic in Paris, where Michael Schumacher was also treated after he broke his leg in an accident ten years ago.

"He has to continue his recovery and go back racing as soon as possible, that's the plan," Altmann added. "No special treatment.

"He is in very good mood, he is in good shape. He wants to come back soon."

Ferrari decided to replace Massa with seven-time world champion Schumacher, who has already started practicing at a wheel of a two-year old F2007 at Mugello today.
