quote:Andy Loses In Epic Historic Wimbledon Match
“I still hope one day my name will be up there with theirs as a winner of this tournament,” Andy declared to a standing ovation at the All England Club. After battling in the longest final in Wimbledon history, Andy held the finalist trophy for the third time 7-5, 6-7, 6-7, 6-3, 14-16.
Despite the heartbreaking loss, Andy’s genuine compassion and grace were on display as always as he addressed the fans four hours after stepping on to Centre Court. “I want to say congratulations to Roger, he is a true Champion, and deserves everything he gets,” Andy looked back at Roger whose 15th Grand Slam victory tops Pete Sampras’s existing record. “Sorry Pete,” Andy even joked with Sampras who sat in the Royal Box during the incredible display of world class tennis.
As Federer accepted the Champion Trophy after the 30th game in the fifth set, the two enjoyed a candid moment. “You already won five,” Andy and Federer bantered during the presentation as the two congratulated each other. From the former Champions who sat courtside to the fans watching at home stateside, there is no question that everyone will put this on the short list of the best matches in the history of the game.
“I”m one of the lucky few,” Andy acknowledged only moments after one of the hardest losses of his career. “I’ll be back,” he smirked as he realized it sounded like threat. But throughout the fortnight, and seeing Andy’s growth mentally and physically over the past few months, it is a very real threat.
With little time to rest, Andy will continue to represent his Country on the world stage as he joins The Bryan Brothers and James Blake en route to Croatia for Davis Cup.

Go Andy! |

Was erg zonde gisteren.

Spare a thought for Roddick. I looked at him slumped in that chair and knew every ounce of psychological and physical energy he had in his soul he drained into that match and he probably was a little delirious in the end. But Roddick will be remembered fondly and not as a loser for his efforts. Because this was one of those rare matches when people see one title holder, but two winners at the end of the day.

 quote:'Grown-up' Roddick eyes US Open
Andy Roddick has "grown up" as a player and wants to use the confidence gained at Wimbledon to fuel a US Open title bid.
..Roddick said coach Larry Stefanki, hired late last year, has helped him in several areas, including fitness, nutrition, and his mental approach to the game.
"Toward the last six months of last year I felt I was going the wrong way," he said at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington, where he is the top seed. "I dealt with some injuries. Then you start dealing with self-belief. Then you come back and take it on the chin a couple of times.
"Now, mentally, I've grown up on the court. I don't get too up or too down, which I used to be guilty of a lot earlier in my career. I'm just going to keep an even keel."
Roddick conceded that his epic five-set loss to Roger Federer at the All England Club was the culmination of an impressive year, not just a fabulous fortnight.
"It does help my confidence going into the US Open the fact that I was recently able to navigate my way through a major tournament," Roddick added.
"Those results can only help on a short-term basis, going into the US Open. But nothing's guaranteed. You still have to be in form."
The 26-year-old has been recovering from a hip injury and this week will play in his first tournament since his riveting 5-7 7-6 7-6 3-6 16-14 loss to Federer.
Three-times winner of the DC hardcourt event, Roddick will play either American Robby Ginepri or Benjamin Becker of Germany in his first match on Wednesday.
"I'm not expecting to pick up where I left off a month ago," he said.
"I'd love to get off to a great start. But it would be presumptuous of me to expect that in my first match."
When Roddick won the US Open in 2003 many believed he would have won several major championships by now. But that title remains the only grand slam hardware in his trophy case.
In the wake of his courageous Wimbledon effort, however, those expectations have been re-kindled. Roddick said his resurgence actually began with a semi-final appearance at the 2009 Australian Open.
"I'm having difficulty separating Wimbledon from the rest of the year," said the fifth-ranked Roddick. "Everyone's focusing on that but I feel like I've been doing a lot of the things I applied at Wimbledon from January forward."
Roddick admitted he is enjoying reading his post-Wimbledon press clippings but concedes he must back it up with an impressive run at Flushing Meadows.
"I feel like I've been a pretty good tennis player regardless of what's happened over the last six weeks," he said. "I know I'm on the defensive quite a bit for that.
"So I'll take the good press coverage while it's there. I know it's fleeting."

quote:Wimbledon - Ivanisevic: Roddick can win at SW19
Goran Ivanisevic thinks it could take three years for Andy Roddick to recover from his Wimbledon disappointment, but he believes the American can still win the title.
..Roddick will play his first competitive match since his heartbreaking 16-14 final-set defeat to Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final when he meets either Robby Ginepri or Benjamin Becker at ATP Washington on Wednesday.
And Ivanisevic claims he knows better than than anyone how the American feels, comparing Roddick's defeat to his own 1998 final loss to Pete Sampras after almost going two sets up.
"Losing that final was the worst feeling I ever had on a tennis court," said the Croatian.
"I had two set points against Sampras for two-sets-to-love, and there was a shaky line-call. If we had Hawk-Eye back then I could have been leading by two-sets-to-love and that would have been so different.
"It took me three years to recover. I only recovered when I won it in 2001. I am floating on a boat enjoying myself now on vacation. If I had not won in 2001 I might have been underneath the boat instead."
The Croatian, who will return to London to play in The Masters tournament this December, watched every ball of the Wimbledon final this year and felt Roddick's pain.
"It was exactly the same for Roddick against Federer as it was for me against Sampras," he said.
"This year's final was the best match I have ever seen Roddick play. He served so well, he played so well and if he had made that backhand volley in the second set tie-break, who knows what would have happened.
"He had 6-5 in that tie-break, and then he missed that backhand volley. He's going to dream about that shot every night until the day that he wins the title.
"He is a good player and he can still win Wimbledon - if I could do it, so can he. When I arrived at Wimbledon in 2001 I was 29 and just happy to have a wild card. I always thought, even then, that I had a chance with my serve, with my game, and look what happened.
"He is younger than I was, he still has some years left, but it could take him three years to recover from that backhand volley. Maybe two years because unlike me he had already won a Grand Slam title. But he can still do it." |

Waar ben je KZ, dit heugdelijke moment is nu gewoon ongemerkt voorbij gegaan quote:Roddick marches on in Washington
Top seed Andy Roddick reached the last eight of the ATP Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington DC with a 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 win against Sam Querrey.
Roddick, in his first tournament since taking a break after Wimbledon to recover from a hip injury, was too strong for his compatriot, seeded 16th.
It was Roddick's 500th tour win, a feat achieved by only 36 in the open era.
Only four current players have passed the 500 wins mark, Roger Federer with 657, Spain's Carlos Moya on 573 and Australian Hewitt with 511.
"It's a pretty small number who have gotten there, an elite group," Roddick said. "Moreso, I got there with enough time to add to it significantly. It's just a nice validation of the consistency I've been able to have in my career."
Roddick, 27 later this month, won his only Grand Slam title at the 2003 US Open. Now ranked fifth in the world he is seeking a 29th career crown this week and a fourth Washington title to go with the cake he received for his 500th match victory.
"That's kind of a milestone in tennis," Roddick said. "It's a very humbling experience. Who knows? We might try for 500 more." |

Fifth seed Andy Roddick produced some of the best tennis of his career to post a 6-4 7-6(4) win over Novak Djokovic and reach the semi-finals of the Canada Masters in Montreal. ..The American will face Juan Martin Del Potro, who beat Roddick in the Washington final last weekend, in Saturday's semi-finals after the Argentine downed world number two and defending champion Rafael Nadal 7-6(5) 6-1.
"I feel pretty good, the last two weeks I've been playing real well," said Roddick. "I haven't been serving as well as I normally do so I think that's a good sign.
"If I had to kind of pick and choose, I'm pretty confident my serve will come around. So I'm pretty happy with the rest of it."
Roddick is enjoying a career renaissance under new coach Larry Stefanki and had the measure of Djokovic for the majority of the match, quickly regaining control in the second set when it was briefly wrestled from him.
But despite the straight sets scoreline, it was by no means a poor performance from Djokovic, who could well have forced a decisive third set when Roddick twice served to stay in the second.

Andy Roddick has pulled out of the ATP World Tour finals after failing to shake off a knee injury, with his place at the O2 taken by Robin Soderling.
..Roddick has failed to shake off the effects of the knee injury he picked up at the Shanghai Masters, admitting defeat in his bid to feature at the season finale for the seventh consecutive year.
"I am really disappointed to miss the Barclays ATP World Tour finals," Roddick said. "I love playing in London and I've heard so many good things about the venue.
"However, I have not fully recovered from my knee injury and I won't be able to compete. One of my goals in 2010 will be to qualify for this event again."

Four Grand Slam winners, five former World No. 1s, an additional 10 former Top 10 players and crowd favourites headline an exciting field for the Brisbane International this January.
With the full player list announced today, Grand Slam Champions, Andy Roddick (US Open 2003), Kim Clijsters (US Open 2009 and 2005), Ana Ivanovic (French Open 2008) and Justine Henin (Australian Open 2004, French Open 2007, 2006, 2005 and 2003 and US Open 2007 and 2003) will be major attractions.
In the men’s draw 2009 Wimbledon finalist and World No. 6 Roddick is joined by the reigning champion Radek Stepanek, fellow Czech Tomas Berdych, Frenchmen Gael Monfils and Richard Gasquet, and crowd favourites James Blake and Marcos Baghdatis.
Buy Tickets
Clijsters, Henin and Ivanovic are joined by World No. 2 Dinara Safina, fellow Russian Nadia Petrova, glamour girl Daniela Hantuchova and former Gold Coast Champion Lucie Safarova.
Australia will be represented by Jelena Dokic in the women’s draw and Peter Luczak in the men’s draw with Taylor Dent, son of former ATP player and 1974 Australian Open finalist Phil Dent, adding another Australian angle.
Brisbane International Tournament Director Steve Ayles said he is excited about the strength of the player field in 2010.
“Both the men’s and women’s draws have some real star power, depth and flamboyant players creating a great mix for spectators,” Ayles said.
“We have had a lot of success in attracting new players in 2010 but have also benefited from a large number of players wanting to return to compete in their second Brisbane International.
“Fifteen out of 25 men and 14 out of 24 women are returning players, which is the ultimate endorsement for the tournament, the event and the city.
“It is going to be very exciting to see who’s going to start their 2010 season in the best possible way – in good form and with a title win in Brisbane.”
The men’s draw is again dominated by the French with Monfils, Gasquet, Jeremy Chardy, Arnaud Clement, Marc Gicquel, Michael Llodra, Paul-Henri Mathieu and Florent Serra named in the main draw.
Brisbane International 2010 series packages and single sessions are on sale now. Ground passes remain $9.90 with the qualifying event on Friday 1–2 January 2010 remaining free. De twee players/mooiboys van het circuit |

quote:The Last Time…With Andy Roddick
American Andy Roddick reveals to DEUCE the last time…
I cooked for myself or others? This morning: breakfast. I made eggs. I started to cook probably a lot more in the last year or so. I’m not claiming to be any good but… I don’t really do anything too great, but for a specialty I probably just put some vegetables together or something like that.
I flew economy class? Five days ago (26th October). I was on Jet Blue from New York to Austin. I don’t remember exactly when I stopped flying economy; it was probably around my second year on tour.
I met a childhood idol? Muhammad Ali is the one person I haven’t met that I would like to. The last person from my childhood, that was one of my favourites, that I met, was Michael Jordan last year. He was playing in a group behind us in golf and I left my putter on the green behind us accidentally on purpose and he grabbed it and I was sort of walking towards the green to retrieve it. So he recognised me and said “nice to meet you” and all the stuff, it was pretty cool.
I shared a hotel room with another player? Oh, that’s got to be juniors!
I had to pay to hire a tennis court? It had to be 10 years ago or something like that… Actually no, it’s not, that’s not true! When it rains here in Austin sometimes they have a very limited number of indoor courts, there’s pretty much two in the city. So when we go there we’re happy to pay for our hour just like everyone else, as long as they can sneak us in to actually get on them.
I dressed formally for a dinner? Pretty much the only time I ever wear a suit is to the formal Davis Cup dinners, so I guess earlier this year.
I lost a bet? It happens all the time! I think I lost a bet on a Fantasy Football game last week. I think it was $50 or something.
I sang karaoke / sang in front of an audience? Car singing doesn’t count right? (laughing) I don’t know that I’ve ever sang in front of an audience… I did some karaoke, but I think it’s been a couple of years. The Bryan brothers always try to get me to sing with their band, but I’ve retired from the Bryan Bros. Band.
I had to show ID/credential at a tournament? Oh, all the time! At the US Open, all the time. And at Wimbledon, because they make you scan in all the time so you have to show up with a credential every time. I was behind Martina Navratilova, she had to show it and she’s only won it like 48 times! We normally figure it out, but I lose my credential probably on a bi-weekly basis, along with the room key!
I slipped on my diet? I slipped up a little bit after the US Open. I had a little bit of time off so I was not scared of Mexican food for a couple of weeks. For about 10 months (this year) I was fine and then the last two months have been a little dicey.
I played a practical joke in the locker room? This is just mean, but it was the attendant in China. Every time you brushed up against the locker it would make some beeping noise and they would have to run down. One day, I was kind of laughing and I was doing it over and over again and the guy was running back and forth (laughing). People play jokes on me all the time, like putting something smelly in your locker… The worst culprits are the kids who work in the locker room in Cincinnati. I have had an ongoing prank for about five years so they always get me pretty good. It’s not printable what they do, though!
I walked my dog? Last night. I took Billie [after Billie Jean King] down to the end of the street and back, she has a place where she does her business. My buddy, Neil, takes care of her when I’m away. It’s kind of like a community dog amongst my friends and Neil looks after her when I’m gone.
I forgot a family member/close friend’s birthday? I try to buy up presents in bulk so you get a nice present that should be worth three or four presents and then I request a free pass for the next time I forget! I’m good at getting them, but I figure if you get them something nice it buys you a couple of forgets.
Being recognised helped me? Last night (Friday 30th October). We went to a Haunted House in Austin and the line had to be a couple of hours long and we were able to get in a little quicker. I get recognised just as much outside the States as I do at home. When you figure tennis is probably the second-biggest sport worldwide and it’s definitely not the second-biggest sport as far as American interests. It’s probably pretty similar.
I heard a good joke? Actually this morning from my friend, Dillon. Again, it’s not printable… |

quote:Australian Open - Cilic edges Roddick in thriller Marin Cilic advanced to his first grand slam semi-final after the Croat resisted a dogged fightback from an injured Andy Roddick to edge their Australian Open quarter-final 7-6(4) 6-3 3-6 2-6 6-3. ..Roddick struggled with a shoulder injury he picked up in the first set and despite needing medical treatment throughout the second, the seventh seeded American battled bravely to take the match into a deciding set. Cilic's previous best performance at a major was in reaching the quarter-finals at last year's US Open and the 14th seed will next meet either defending champion Rafael Nadal or fifth seed Andy Murray for a place in the final. "It wasn't easy. I got experience of it during the week," Cilic said of having to play his third five-set match of the tournament. "I just had a few extra gears in the last set. It wasn't easy when he started to play a lot better. I really struggled on my serve and he put a lot of pressure on me and I didn't know what to do. "But I just took it point-by-point... and then I got the break." The 27-year-old Roddick, meanwhile, will be left to rue the timing of the injury and was heard telling the trainer that his right shoulder felt "dead" and there was tingling in his hand while receiving treatment. Cilic edged the first set in a tiebreak and seemed to take full advantage of Roddick's growing fragility in the next, before the Croat had a nasty scare when he crashed into a line judge in the back court, though neither he nor the official were injured. He regained his composure to secure the crucial break in that fourth game and held on to the advantage to seal the second set. Roddick, however, came out firing in the third set and raced to a 3-0 lead as Cilic, who had beaten Juan Martin Del Potro in the fourth round in a five-set marathon, appeared to wilt and the American took it 6-3. The American again started strongly in the fourth, racing to a 5-0 lead and while Cilic broke and then held, Roddick ensured the match would go to a decider. The loss of those two games at the end of the fourth, however, served as a portent for the fifth with Roddick's momentum evaporating and Cilic raced away to a 5-2 lead. He converted that advantage into victory two games later when Roddick's backhand push went wide, prompting the tall Croat to sink to his knees in celebration after three hours and 50 minutes. |

quote:Roddick Knows The Way To San Jose
Sporting a pair of bright red running shoes, looking more subdued than usual, perhaps tired from having attended the Super Bowl and seeing one-time tennis opponent Drew Brees in action, three-time SAP Open champ Andy Roddick spoke briefly one night prior to his first-round SAP Open match.
Having been struck with a right shoulder injury that hindered him during his quarterfinal loss to Marin Cilic at last month’s Australian Open, Roddick admits, “it was a little touch and go to be playing here. But I got the clearance I needed and I’ll give it go.”
Keeping the ball-hitting to a minimum since Australia, Roddick only started serving in the last few days. “That’s the part I’ll be most concerned about,” says Roddick. “The first match will be telling. If I can get through that one, I should be OK. I may have to work my way into this tournament a little bit.”
Roddick’s tennis rivalry with Brees goes back to his early childhood in Austin. Nearly four years older than Roddick, Brees, as Roddick recalls, “beat me a couple of times. I beat him and then he quit to play all sorts of other sports. I don’t remember his game, but I do remember he was quite an athlete.” Asked for more, Roddick joked, “I’d love to be able to break down point structure for you” – and then conceded he was only nine years old at the time.
More than 20 years later, he’s still grinding away, still looking for the answers. As he sees it, Roddick’s 2009 “had a lot more positives than negatives,” a year he regards as his most successful end-to-end campaign since 2004 (when he finished the year ranked number two in the world). As far as San Jose goes, Roddick says, “I always have a good time here. There’s a comfort to it.” http://www.sapopentennis.com/ftpuploads/OP.pdf

Only moments after the cover reveal Andy tweeted, “so happy/proud of my wife… the new cover for sports illustrated swimsuit issue!!!! unreal… so excited!!!!!!!!!!”
An industry secret guarded until late Monday was announced accompanied by a several story banner of the cover that will surely stop traffic in New York City. Congratulations to Mrs. Roddick, the 2010 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Cover-girl!
The special issue, which sold over 4 million copies last year will undoubtedly be another media sensation this year when the models take over New York and Las Vegas this week. |

Fellow American DeHeart served for the set at 5-3 but could not close it out as Roddick fought back to force a tie-breaker, then sealed it 7-1 with a forehand winner.
Playing in his first match since the Australian Open, Roddick finished with 11 aces and will next meet Leonardo Mayer in the second round. |

Andy Roddick moved closer to a fourth title at the SAP Open with an easy 6-3 6-2 win over second-round opponent Leonardo Mayer.
..The top-seeded American, who last won the title here in 2008 after triumphs in 2004 and 2005, took just 75 minutes to book his place in the next round in San Jose.
Roddick made 36 of 42 points on his service and never faced a break point against the Argentine.
"Luckily the court here is helping out a little," Roddick told the Mercury News.
"I'm able to mix it up a little bit more. My first serve was 74 (percent) last night and 73 per cent tonight. I'll take that."
Looking to rebound from his quarter-final defeat by Marin Cilic at the Australian Open where he was bothered by an injured shoulder, Roddick has yet to drop a set in San Jose.
Roddick is an impressive 30-5 all-time in San Jose where he feels right at home.
"I was comfortable out there tonight," he said. "I was able to kind of move the ball around a little bit more. That just comes with getting matches in."
In the next round he will take on Tomas Berdych from whom he has won four of six matches. |

"I think I've been broken once, but I don't know that I've had that many break points against me throughout the week.
"That's always a good thing in that holding that easily makes my returns better," added the American, whose victory was his 11th in a row against the Spaniard.

quote:Roddick good, but not great Tue Apr 06 02:01PM When I heard what Larry Stefanki had to say on Andy Roddick's potential to emulate Andre Agassi in his later career, my initial thought was that it was just the natural reaction of a coach talking up his player. There is no doubt to me that Roddick was starting to slip down the rankings and that his role as a contender at Grand Slams was diminishing. But last year's Wimbledon changed all that. And following his latest win in Miami, it seems he's not quite ready to fall down the rankings and I believe he has what it takes to go on and win one more Slam. But can he do what Agassi did and win five more major titles and become world number one after turning 29? I'm not so sure. Roddick always does well in America, both in Grand Slams and ATP events, and he was on terrific form in Miami, especially against Rafa Nadal and Tomas Berdych, who is playing really well at the moment. But perhaps it is a bit late for him. Two or three years ago when he was that bit younger I would have said yes, he can become world number one again. But he is limited at the moment. What he does now is use his strengths better to mask his weaknesses. The Nadal match proved as much when he combined brilliantly with Stefanki on a tactical level, working out a way to take the Spaniard on, mixing it up and not giving him as much pace as he would have liked. But his backhand isn't the best - he hides it well - and his forehand, while better than it was two or three years ago, isn't as strong as in his early career. His service game remains the key, but what is really impressive about Roddick is that the desire still burns brightly inside him. You have to admire him for that. You can understand why Stefanki came out with those comments. None of the top players are getting any better; Roger Federer may well win a couple more Slams this year but for me he's still not the player he was two years ago, Nadal has had his injury problems, Andy Murray has not advanced quite at the pace we expected and Novak Djokovic certainly hasn't. The others are certainly catching up and the gap between the top four and the next six or eight is slight. Roddick is well amongst the chasing pack. Wimbledon last year will have given Roddick a huge boost. There comes a point when a player needs to see definite results and some substance behind a good relationship with a coach. That's what happened in SW19 and it seemed to reignite some belief inside him. If he is to win another Slam, it could well be there. It's possible, but I can't see him winning multiple Slams. In that respect, Agassi stands way ahead of Roddick. |

Brooklyn Decker has been voted Sexiest Woman Alive by Esquire magazine. Decker has appeared in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue every year since 2006, and is married to tennis player Andy Roddick.
The blonde supermodel-turned-actress won the coveted title after some five million votes were cast by readers of the men's magazine.
Brooklyn beat off tough competition from the likes of fellow supermodel Heidi Klum, actress Megan Fox and a total field of 64 nominess by receiving an impressive 89 percent of votes cast.
The beauty was thrilled to be honoured with the title and said she has had an especially good year, getting a part in movie Just Go with It alongside Adam Sandler and gracing the cover of the prestigious Sports Illustrated magazine.
"I've had a very lucky year with the Sports Illustrated cover, the new movie, and now this. Let's hope good things come in threes," she gushed.
The 23-year-old swimsuit model also praised nominee Heidi, who just lost out on the title, admitting she can't believe how good the 37-year-old mother of four looks.
"It's not normal to look that good with three full-time jobs and four children," said Brooklyn.
Via Esquire.com:
The most beautiful tennis trophy ever is taking home the first-ever Sexiest Woman Alive Madness trophy. Twenty-three-year-old Brooklyn Decker dominated the veteran Heidi Klum on her home court here this past week in the finals of Esquire's upset-laden, fan-favorite bracket. The blond captured 89 percent of the vote for a championship run nobody — with the possible exception of Seal, who was home taking care of Klum's newborn baby — really saw coming. quote:Andy Roddick and Brooklyn Decker Waiting to Make Babies
We can only imagine what beautiful kids tennis champ Andy Roddick and Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker will have some day.
However, Decker says she and her hunky hubby are in no rush to start a family…
"Not to namedrop because that's really lame, but I ran into Fergie one time and she said to me, 'Once you get married, people are going to ask, when are you having babies? So just get ready for it. It's going to be so annoying,' " Decker, 23, told me at the Guys Choice Awards, which air Sunday on Spike TV.
"And she's so right. So my answer is, we're obviously waiting. We're young and we're focused on our careers and being together right now."
The two got hitched a little over a year ago in Roddick's Austin, Texas, home.
Decker said she will spend three weeks with Roddick, 27, in Europe this summer. "I'm just going to be a wife," she smiled. "I'm just going to go and be a wife and be a plain Jane. I'm so excited."
As for that namedropping, it's going to be pretty hard for Decker to avoid if her career keeps going the way it is. She recently shot her first movie, Just Go With It, in Hawaii opposite Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman and Adam Sandler.
"Talk about intimidating," Decker said. "I was shaking. But to have them around you, they were so encouraging. I mean it was my first film and to have them as teachers? You can't top that. So I really had to pep talk myself and say, ‘Use this as a learning experience,' and I did. But yeah, I was shaking." |

Former world number one Andy Roddick said a virus was to blame for his recent fitness problems but expects to be back in good shape for the US Open.
..Roddick pulled out of this week's Toronto Masters citing an illness and after a lacklustre loss to Frenchman Gilles Simon in the recent Washington Classic third round he complained of feeling lethargic.
The 27 year-old American will compete in next week's Cincinnati Masters after tests showed he had been suffering from mononucleosis, a viral illness.
"I pulled out last week on the advice of doctors. I got some blood work done in Washington, and then again in Texas, and one of them came back positive. I've been dealing with a mild, mild case of mono for the last couple of months that I wasn't really sure about," Roddick explained.
"They think I'm fine now. They think I'm most of the way through it, if not all the way through it. It's kind of a mental relief opposed to wondering why and if I was out of shape," he said.
"It's nice to just have a little bit of clarity moving forward. It's not something that's going to affect me, anything super serious.
Roddick, champion at Flushing Meadows in 2003, won in Brisbane this year and he was playing well until March but he has since slipped outside the top 10 in the world rankings.
The American said he had been feeling out of sorts for the past two months and had been skipping some physical training.
"Normally I enjoy training all day and running all day and doing all that stuff. I opted out of probably four or five workouts this summer that I've never done that before," he said. |

This past summer, Andy Roddick and wife Brooklyn Decker took an abbreviated IQ test while on a morning radio show in Austin. The Sports Illustrated cover girl scored an impressive 136, three points more than her tennis-playing husband. (Both scores are pretty impressive.)
We bring this up now because Roddick was asked about the infamous IQ test while in Switzerland this week for the Basel Open.
From the ATP website: "I was just behind my wife, unfortunately," said Roddick when asked about the result following his first round match Wednesday at the Swiss Indoors Basel. The World No. 9 was quick to point out a factor he believed affected the outcome, asserting, "She had a [136], but she was using paper for the first half of it!"

Defending his title, Roddick took 74 minutes to snuff out fifth seeded Baghdatis's challenge and set up a clash with towering South African Kevin Anderson of a growing big-serving reputation.
"I feel good after three matches. I felt good about pretty much everything tonight," Roddick said.
Looking ahead, the American reckoned a tougher assignment awaits him in the semis.
"It's going to be a different match. I feel like it's less about form. With a serve like that you're not going to see a lot of balls you could go games without seeing it, so it's hard to get into a rhythm.
"It's going to be a matter of opportunity."
Earlier in the day, Berrer sensed his opportunity as well but could not stop Soderling from advancing.
The world number five Swede broke the 58th-ranked Berrer once to claim the first set but was unable to penetrate the lanky 30-year-old's serve in the second.
Soderling prevailed in a tense 9-7 tiebreak to seal the hard-fought match in 95 minutes and set up a quarter-final encounter with Australian qualifier Matt Ebden, who earlier upset eighth-seeded Uzbek Denis Istomin 6-4 6-4.
The double French Open finalist said he would be wary of the 196th-ranked Ebden as a player with nothing to lose as he warms up for the January 17-30 Australian Open.
"A couple of years ago when I played top ranked players I played without any pressure at all - and I always enjoyed the matches," he said.
"To me it was easier to play when I felt I had nothing to lose... There is always the possibility that I can lose if I am not 100 per cent."

Dag Andy

quote: Altidore dankt toptennisser: ‘Had kaasmarkt nooit gezien zonder Roddick’
