Australian Open - Cilic edges Roddick in thriller

Marin Cilic advanced to his first grand slam semi-final after the Croat resisted a dogged fightback from an injured Andy Roddick to edge their Australian Open quarter-final 7-6(4) 6-3 3-6 2-6 6-3.

..Roddick struggled with a shoulder injury he picked up in the first set and despite needing medical treatment throughout the second, the seventh seeded American battled bravely to take the match into a deciding set.

Cilic's previous best performance at a major was in reaching the quarter-finals at last year's US Open and the 14th seed will next meet either defending champion Rafael Nadal or fifth seed Andy Murray for a place in the final.

"It wasn't easy. I got experience of it during the week," Cilic said of having to play his third five-set match of the tournament.

"I just had a few extra gears in the last set. It wasn't easy when he started to play a lot better. I really struggled on my serve and he put a lot of pressure on me and I didn't know what to do.

"But I just took it point-by-point... and then I got the break."

The 27-year-old Roddick, meanwhile, will be left to rue the timing of the injury and was heard telling the trainer that his right shoulder felt "dead" and there was tingling in his hand while receiving treatment.

Cilic edged the first set in a tiebreak and seemed to take full advantage of Roddick's growing fragility in the next, before the Croat had a nasty scare when he crashed into a line judge in the back court, though neither he nor the official were injured.

He regained his composure to secure the crucial break in that fourth game and held on to the advantage to seal the second set.

Roddick, however, came out firing in the third set and raced to a 3-0 lead as Cilic, who had beaten Juan Martin Del Potro in the fourth round in a five-set marathon, appeared to wilt and the American took it 6-3.

The American again started strongly in the fourth, racing to a 5-0 lead and while Cilic broke and then held, Roddick ensured the match would go to a decider.

The loss of those two games at the end of the fourth, however, served as a portent for the fifth with Roddick's momentum evaporating and Cilic raced away to a 5-2 lead.

He converted that advantage into victory two games later when Roddick's backhand push went wide, prompting the tall Croat to sink to his knees in celebration after three hours and 50 minutes.

Sporting a pair of bright red running shoes, looking more subdued than usual, perhaps tired from having attended the Super Bowl and seeing one-time tennis opponent Drew Brees in action, three-time SAP Open champ Andy Roddick spoke briefly one night prior to his first-round SAP Open match.

Having been struck with a right shoulder injury that hindered him during his quarterfinal loss to Marin Cilic at last month’s Australian Open, Roddick admits, “it was a little touch and go to be playing here. But I got the clearance I needed and I’ll give it go.”

Keeping the ball-hitting to a minimum since Australia, Roddick only started serving in the last few days. “That’s the part I’ll be most concerned about,” says Roddick. “The first match will be telling. If I can get through that one, I should be OK. I may have to work my way into this tournament a little bit.”

Roddick’s tennis rivalry with Brees goes back to his early childhood in Austin. Nearly four years older than Roddick, Brees, as Roddick recalls, “beat me a couple of times. I beat him and then he quit to play all sorts of other sports. I don’t remember his game, but I do remember he was quite an athlete.” Asked for more, Roddick joked, “I’d love to be able to break down point structure for you” – and then conceded he was only nine years old at the time.

More than 20 years later, he’s still grinding away, still looking for the answers. As he sees it, Roddick’s 2009 “had a lot more positives than negatives,” a year he regards as his most successful end-to-end campaign since 2004 (when he finished the year ranked number two in the world). As far as San Jose goes, Roddick says, “I always have a good time here. There’s a comfort to it.”

An industry secret guarded until late Monday was announced accompanied by a several story banner of the cover that will surely stop traffic in New York City. Congratulations to Mrs. Roddick, the 2010 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Cover-girl!

The special issue, which sold over 4 million copies last year will undoubtedly be another media sensation this year when the models take over New York and Las Vegas this week.

..After breezing through the first set, the big-serving American was broken early to trail 3-0 in the second.

Fellow American DeHeart served for the set at 5-3 but could not close it out as Roddick fought back to force a tie-breaker, then sealed it 7-1 with a forehand winner.

Playing in his first match since the Australian Open, Roddick finished with 11 aces and will next meet Leonardo Mayer in the second round.

Roddick rolls on in San Jose

Andy Roddick moved closer to a fourth title at the SAP Open with an easy 6-3 6-2 win over second-round opponent Leonardo Mayer.

..The top-seeded American, who last won the title here in 2008 after triumphs in 2004 and 2005, took just 75 minutes to book his place in the next round in San Jose.

Roddick made 36 of 42 points on his service and never faced a break point against the Argentine.

"Luckily the court here is helping out a little," Roddick told the Mercury News.

"I'm able to mix it up a little bit more. My first serve was 74 (percent) last night and 73 per cent tonight. I'll take that."

Looking to rebound from his quarter-final defeat by Marin Cilic at the Australian Open where he was bothered by an injured shoulder, Roddick has yet to drop a set in San Jose.

Roddick is an impressive 30-5 all-time in San Jose where he feels right at home.

"I was comfortable out there tonight," he said. "I was able to kind of move the ball around a little bit more. That just comes with getting matches in."

In the next round he will take on Tomas Berdych from whom he has won four of six matches.
