FIA Statement Of Condolence
20/07/2009
Following yesterday’s tragic accident, the FIA extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Henry Surtees. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.
The FIA is awaiting a report into the incident.

quote:F1 at risk of EC investigation
Pitpass hears that the gaze of the European Commission may soon fall on F1 and, in particular, the selection process of the three new teams which are due to join the sport next year.
One of the rejected teams told Pitpass' business editor Chris Sylt that it is actively considering all options for redress including making a formal complaint to the EC.
One of the bones of contention is that the teams claim they were told by the FIA that for their entry to stand any chance of success they would have to use a Cosworth engine. This seems to be a case of commercial bias and when the charge was put to the FIA it didn't deny it but instead said that it "has always considered the availability of an independent supply of engines to the new Formula One entrants and the other independent teams to be a priority."
Whether the EC would rule that this is sufficient reason to justify demanding new entrants to use Cosworth engines remains to be seen, particularly given that in 2001 it said "the Commission has been assured that the FIA rules will never be enforced so as to prevent or impede a competition or the participation of a competitor, save for reasons inherently linked to FIA's regulatory role of maintaining safety standards." (link)
Clearly, the demand to use Cosworth could hardly be inherently linked to maintaining safety standards since the FIA has also allowed other manufacturers to supply engines to F1 teams in 2010. However, there is little doubt that by demanding teams use Cosworth engines it would prevent teams not using Cosworths from competing in F1. It would also prevent other independent engine suppliers (those which are not already involved in F1) from getting into the sport.
If the complaint does indeed go ahead it will be most interesting to see how far the EC will go to investigate the allegations and redress any unfairness which it may find. Seasoned observers of F1 will remember the last time that the EC investigated F1 in the late 1990s. It led to sweeping changes such as F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone stepping down from several positions he held on the FIA and also the sale of F1's commercial rights for 100 years.
It is worth remembering that there have even been claims that the FIA specifically aided the bid of Manor Motorsport so would the EC look into this and would it even go so far as to carry out the team selection process itself if necessary?
All the EC will say at present is that "should such a complaint be filed, we would review it with a view to ensuring that the competition rules are respected."

Since 1998, F1 cars have had to fit wheel tethers connecting the wheels to the chassis. This rule was introduced to try to stop wheels coming free and bouncing around dangerously during an accident. Unfortunately, wheels still do come off the cars during crashes, tragically killing a marshall at the Italian GP in 2000. The FIA have introduced an extra tether to each wheel for the 2001 season to try to stop the wheels coming off and causing injury to other drivers, marshals or spectators. The tether must attach to the chassis at one end, with the other end connecting to the wheel hub.
The wheel tethers are made by one of three companies in the UK, Future Fibres in London being one of them, and take the form of a rope. The tethers used in F1 are a derivative of high performance marine ropes, made especially for each car. They are made from a special polymer called polybenzoaoxide (PBO) which is often called Zylon. This Zylon material has a very high strength and stiffness characteristic (around 280GPa) much like carbon, but the advantage of Zylon is that it can be used as a pure fibre unlike carbon which has to be in composite form to gain its strength. The drawback of Zylon is that is must be protected from light, so it is covered in a shrink wrapped protective cover. The tethers are designed to withstand about 5000 kg of load, but often they can break quite easily during an accident, especially if the cable gets twisted by the broken suspension members. The teams normally replace the tethers every two or three races to ensure that they can withstand the loads put on them during an accident.

The axe has fallen at Ferrari with the Gazzetta dello Sport revealing that John Iley, head of aerodynamics at the Maranello based squad has lost his job over the un-competitiveness of this year’s challenger, the F60.
The F60 has only managed to secure two podium finishes so far this season, one for Kimi Raikkonen and one for Felipe Massa and they are currently way down the order in the title fight, something that is totally unacceptable for the reigning world champions.
While his position at Ferrari is no longer in force, he is still under contract until the end of the season and therefore to ensure Ferrari secrets remain Ferrari secrets, he will be unable to go to work for another other team until next year, meaning he will be unable to have any input in their 2010 contenders.

Drugs overdose suspected in death of Alexander Mosley, whose father is formula one boss
guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 6 May 2009 15.09 BST
The eldest son of formula one boss Max Mosley has been found dead in his west London home.
Alexander Mosley, a 39-year-old economist, is reported to have died after a suspected drugs overdose. His death is not being treated as suspicious.
Police were called to Mosley's Notting Hill flat an hour after he was seen returning home with another man.
Neighbour Steve Abrams, 70, a retired psychologist, told the London Paper: "I saw two men go into the flat and about an hour later there were rows of police outside and an ambulance."
Paramedics could not revive Mosley and he was declared dead at the scene.
A spokeswoman for Scotland Yard said: "We were called at 4.20pm on Tuesday to reports of a man found dead at a property in W11. We believe we know the identity of the deceased. Next of kin are being informed and a postmortem will take place in due course."
The former formula one team boss Eddie Jordan said he was "devastated" by the news.
"Max and Alexander particularly were very close," he told Sky News. He said the father and son shared "a great intellect" and he described Alexander as a "hugely clever and talented computer expert".
"It's totally tragic, he was such a bright boy. I'm devastated for them."
In a statement, the motor racing's governing body, the FIA, said: "The FIA extends sincere condolences to the Mosley family on the sad news of the death of Alexander Mosley.
"Our thoughts are with Alexander's family and friends, and we would request that the media respect the Mosley family's privacy at this difficult time."
Max Mosley, 69, is president of the FIA and the son of the 1930s British fascist leader Sir Oswald Mosley.
Last year he won a high-profile privacy action against the News of the World over a story the paper ran about his encounter with five prostitutes.
He married Joan Taylor in 1960. The couple had two sons, Alexander and Patrick, who was born in 1972.

De 35-jarige Jacques Villeneuve keert terug in de Formule 1. De Canadese oud-wereldkampioen tekent binnenkort bij USF1 Racing. Dat meldt het Duitse tijdschrift Sport Bild.
Rijdersduo

quote:To: Mr Ari Vatanen
21st July 2009
Dear Ari
I am writing in my capacity as Chairman of the FIA Foundation to express my concern at your reported remarks about Michelle Yeoh and the allegation that in some way we are funding Jean Todt’s candidacy to be President of the FIA. A number of websites have included as quotes from you the following:
“At the expense of the FIA Foundation, Jean goes with a private plane with his girlfriend, supposedly as a FIA representative, to various parts of the world, sometimes he has gone to Asia, sometimes to Canada, sometimes to Buenos Aires, whatever. In fact, he is doing a campaign totally supported and paid by the FIA”.
These assertions are totally false. For the last two years Jean Todt’s partner, the internationally acclaimed actress Michelle Yeoh, has served in a voluntary capacity as the global Ambassador for the Make Roads Safe campaign which is co-ordinated by the FIA Foundation. In this role Michelle has travelled all over the world to support the campaign especially in advance of this year’s first ever global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety to be held in Moscow on November 19-20. A centrepiece of her involvement has been the production of a documentary film, Turning Point, which was broadcast worldwide in May on BBC World TV and also featured at the launch of the Commission for Global Road Safety’s new report calling for a UN Decade of Action.
This month Michelle participated in the Make Roads Safe Africa conference held in Dar es Salaam, speaking alongside four African Ministers of Transport and also meeting with the President of Tanzania. This important event has been the main preparatory meeting for African governments for the Moscow Ministerial and was attended by over 300 delegates across the continent. These included FIA mobility and sport clubs from Africa which took the opportunity of being in Dar es Salaam to hold additional meetings with support from the FIA Foundation. I have attached follow up emails from David Njoroge and Surinder Thatthi which give you their unsolicited and highly positive opinion of the outcome of these meetings.
Jean Todt sometimes accompanies Michelle Yeoh on her trips for the FIA Foundation. He does so when he has another task to fulfil. In Dar es Salaam, for example, a workshop was organised for ASNs on motor sport safety issues which was financed by the Motor Sport Safety Fund. Jean is a member of the Management Committee of this Fund and attended in that capacity. As you know Jean Todt was elected President of eSafety Aware earlier this year and in that role is helping to promote intelligent vehicle safety systems such as Electronic Stability Control.
All these engagements are very helpful to the work of the Foundation and demonstrate the strong commitment of both Michelle and Jean to our work promoting road safety. These activities have nothing whatsoever to do with the FIA, or the recently announced election. It is very disappointing that you have chosen to misrepresent the work of a fellow Trustee in this way and belittle the magnificent contribution being made by Michelle Yeoh. I am also surprised that you do not seem to be aware of the truth of their involvement as their activities have been extensively reported to you at successive meetings of the Board of Trustees of the FIA Foundation of which you are a member.
I appreciate that during the forthcoming election for the FIA Presidency there needs to be open and robust debate. However, I would ask that you do not again misrepresent the role of the FIA Foundation in this way.
Yours sincerely
Carlos Macaya
Chairman, FIA Foundation
