Queensland's state government has not ruled out making a bid to host a round of the breakaway championship on the Gold Coast.
Responding to the leaked FOTA calendar that showed Adelaide or Surfer's Paradise as representing Australia, sports minister Phil Reeves admitted it is a possibility.
Surfer's Paradise has for years hosted Indycars, and from 2009 the A1GP series will race on the coastal street circuit.
"We are always interested in bringing world-class events to Queensland and certainly would not rule out the possibility of hosting a Formula One race on the Gold Coast," Reeves said.
Reeves' Victorian government counterpart Tim Holding, however, rubbished claims that the prestige of Melbourne's Australian Grand Prix risks being usurped.
"It's been made very clear on a number of occasions that if Formula One racing is to take place in Australia, it will take place in Melbourne," he said.
"This is just part of the pushing and shoving that Formula One is well known for," he added, a sentiment backed up by the Melbourne promoter Drew Ward.
Ward said: "We have every faith Formula One Management will reach a satisfactory resolution and the Australian GP will happen next year in March," he said.
It is not known, meanwhile, if Malaysia would or could bid for a breakaway round, with Sepang boss Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir commenting that the split would turn premier racing into "a beauty contest".

In addition, FIA and SLEC/FOA, the companies in charge of the commercial exploitation of Formula One, agreed to various changes in the commercial agreements for Formula One designed to lower or remove barriers to entry for the creation and operation of other motor sport series, in particular those that might compete with Formula One. This was achieved, for example, by removing restrictions in circuit contracts about the hosting of other motor sports events.
(mijn bold)quote:Following discussions with Competition Commissioner Mario Monti, the FIA agreed to modify its rules to bring them into line with EU law. After consulting interested third parties and the Member States, the Commission is now ready to close the file. The modifications introduced by FIA will ensure that :
* The role of FIA will be limited to that of a sports regulator, with no commercial conflicts of interest;
* The FIA rules are not used to prevent or impede new competitions unless justified on grounds related to the safe, fair or orderly conduct of motor sport;
* Internal and external appeals procedures against FIA decisions are strengthened.
To prevent conflicts of interest, FIA has sold all its rights in the FIA Formula One World Championship and will allow the creation of potential inter- and intra-brand competition between Formula One and similar races and series.

An agreement has been reached between Formula 1's governing body and the teams to prevent a breakaway series, says FIA president Max Mosley.
The two parties had been engulfed in a bitter row over planned budgetary and technical changes for the new season.
But it appears a resolution has now been found and, as part of the deal, Mosley has agreed not to stand for re-election as president.
"There will be no split. We have agreed to a reduction of costs," added Mosley.
"There will be one F1 championship but the objective is to get back to the spending levels of the early '90s within two years."
F1 surpremo Bernie Ecclestone added that he is "very happy commonsense has prevailed", following a meeting of 120 members of the FIA in Paris aimed at resolving the crisis.
Ahead of the meeting, FIA president Max Mosley had insisted that he would not step down as part of the price of any potential agreement and might even seek re-election as head of world motor sport.
He hit out at what he described as "wholly unjustified criticism" of the FIA, adding: "It is for the FIA membership, and the FIA membership alone, to decide on its democratically elected leadership, not the motor industry and still less the individuals the industry employs to run its Formula 1 teams."
However, it appears Mosley has now agreed to step down when his fourth term as FIA president ends in October, while writs that had been threatened against Ferrari and the other teams in the Formula 1 Teams Association (Fota) - McLaren, BMW Sauber, Renault, Toyota, Red Bull Racing, Toro Rosso and Brawn GP - are likely to be shelved.
"It's come as a bit of a surprise, given that Fota were planning to meet in Bologna on Thursday to discuss their plans for the breakaway championship," reports BBC sports news correspondent James Munro in Paris.
"But what we got today after a meeting of World Motorsport Council was an impromptu press conference and Max Mosley began by saying there will be no split, there will be one championship.
"He said that over the course of the negotiations he had been able to secure guarantees from the teams who were threatening to get away that they would try to reign back the levels of their spending to the levels they were spending in early 90s.
"It was him that had come up with the idea that next season all teams would have a budget cap of about £40m, but there has clearly been a trade-off as he has also agreed to do what he says was always the plan - stand down as president of the FIA this October."

The Formula One Teams' Association said, however, that their entries were conditional on a new Concorde Agreement being signed by all parties before 12th June.
"The renewal of the Concorde Agreement will provide security for the future of the sport by binding all parties in a formal relationship that will ensure stability via sound governance," said FOTA in a statement.
The teams' body also said that the entries were conditional on the regulations being based on 2009 rules, "identical for all competitors and amended in accordance with proposals that FOTA has submitted to the FIA."
"All FOTA teams' entries for the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship have been submitted today on the understanding that (a) all FOTA teams will be permitted to compete during the 2010 Formula One season on an identical regulatory basis and (b) that they may only be accepted as a whole," added the statement.
