Ik heb geen probleem, waar haal je dat in godsnaam vandaan?
Er is niets zeldzaams aan de stem van Boyle. Het zeldzame aan het hele geval is juist dat een niet zo heel erg aantrekkelijk en zich wereldvreemd en banaal gedragend persoon in een zeer populair programma auditeert en over een stem blijkt te beschikken die normaal gesproken niet bij zo'n persoon verwacht wordt, maar die stem is nog steeds gewoon middelmatig. Door het programma wordt het een hype, en nergens anders door. Als Simon Cowell zegt dat iemand goed is neemt de wereld die mening helaas klakkeloos over. Meestal heeft ie gelijk overigens. Maar helaas meent men daar dan een hype aan te moeten verbinden ofzo.
Joan Sutherland ziet er ook uit als de Wicked Witch of the West, maar heeft dus wel een fantastische en zeldzame stem.

Susan Boyle heeft een rauw talent en had, als ze op jongere leeftijd de juiste zangtraining had gehad, een waarschijnlijk uitstekende (jazz? klassieke?) zangeres kunnen worden. Wat ze nu doet zonder training is goed (ik baseer dit vooral op haar oude cd-opname van Cry Me A River) en zelfs bewonderenswaardig, maar past vooral goed in de context van het programma, waarvoor dit soort sprookjes nodig zijn. Ik gun haar het succes, ik gun iedereen succes in het leven, maar ik zit nog steeds in Team Waar-is-al-die-heisa-om? Ze zingt goed maar ik heb beter gehoord, ze ziet er niet uit maar ik heb lelijker gezien (de spiegel niet meegerekend). En ja ook de combinatie uiterlijk/stem en dat het een niet opweegt tegen het ander, geen unicum. Youtube heeft haar gecatapulteerd naar de grote hoogtes waarin haar populariteit zich nu bevindt. Een lopend vuurtje, dat 5 jaar geleden misschien een paar showbiz-programma's buiten Engeland zou hebben bereikt maar lang niet zoveel mensen als nu.
Maar da's dus even over het Fenomeen Boyle. De Zangeres Boyle, ik vind haar goed, maar ik krijg geen kippevel, ik krijg kippevel van de reacties van het publiek en de jury en Boyle's reactie daarna.

Allemaal overdreven. En het feit dat het filmpje zo veel keer bekeken is zegt niet meteen dat ze een muzikale messias is. Als je meer dan 2 miljoen views haalt met de hype die ze eromheen creëren dan is het alleen maar logisch dat het meer wordt.
Ze kan niet slecht zingen, maar het is allemaal gewoon zo opgeblazen. Over een paar maanden hoor je er niks meer van.

Qua postuur en qua uitstraling kan ze helemaal geen rol spelen in een musical, of het moet Ruth zijn, in de Pirates of Penzance, maar dat is geen Webber musical.
Misschien Jennyanydots in Cats? Da's ook een plomp geval. Maar dan moet ze weer kunnen tappen, en dat zie ik Boyle nog niet doen.

Volgens mij is haar 'verlies' onverwacht voor de mensen die al 7 weken lang zitten te fappen op dat ene youtube-filmpje en verder geen flauw idee hebben wat de rest van de acts waren. Of nog nooit een andere versie van dat nummer hebben gehoord. Maar, smaken verschillen he.

The picture that graces many of Britain's front pages this morning is of a Scottish woman with crinkly hair whose mother, Bridget, an Irish immigrant shorthand typist, experienced difficulties during birth. Susan Boyle was deprived of oxygen for a number of minutes and has had learning difficulties since. She was born three months before Diana Princess of Wales; four months before me. Susan has rarely held a proper job, caring instead for her mother, who died two years ago at the age of 91. Susan likes to sing, and is really rather fine at it.
The picture needs words of explanation. Because it could mark, and should mark, a moment of national reappraisal. Never in our fast-changing history, until Susan Boyle, have we managed to quite so swiftly canonise and then pillory another human being, for our own titillation. For our own grubby, voyeuristic amusement: just because we could.
It was just six weeks ago, on 11 April, that Susan first sang on Britain's Got Talent and became an instant hit. Then, in the semi-finals, rather than being jailed for consciously singing a song written by Andrew Lloyd Webber while not actually being held at gunpoint, her success continued. Through the internet, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube. We all watched, and watched again, the starched brows of the judging panel crinkle to genuine emotion; the sneers of the audience cartoon into delight.
Then, of course, we started discussing her. America joined in. And so the world had its say. On Susan. On every blog and website: on every online newspaper asking the mob to fill their pages for them. On her hair and her voice. On her figure. On her accent. On, most recently, her swearing, after she got rightly peeved at a couple mocking her in a London hotel. By the time of last night's final, we had learnt, she was close to breaking point, shrilly unnerved by not only the media attention but the knowledge that the world, a much bigger world than the Scottish village of Blackburn, was talking about her. All the time.
Of course she swore. She's from West Lothian. She drank, normally in a corner alone, in her local pub (called, with savage Scots humour, the Happy Valley). She swore with the best of them. Hell, if he'd been brought up there, Terry Waite would swear the hole out of a drunken navvie. And sometimes she would get up and sing, and her singing was lovely, and it was what people liked about the lass they'd called "Simple Susan". That, and her love for her mother.
And I know, of course, that the media played its huge part in this, pretending to "reflect public attitudes" while quite consciously sitting there with its big meaty stick in the bowl, stirring up the turds. But this fiercely fast arc of fame/ignominy, this trajectory of wilful judgment through which Susan Boyle has been put - for simply, let's not forget, chunting out a song or two nicely on a talent contest - has been fuelled, hugely, by our twittering, and facebooking, and interacting. Just because we can. Never mind the quality: feel the bandwidth.
And Susan has cried. A slightly simple woman who normally drank alone has realised that everyone on the planet, from intrusive journalists such as myself to even more misogynistic morons playing alone on laptops in darkest Missouri or Madagascar, is playing with her life. Not just conjecturing about her armpit hair: actually creating a rise/fall arc of fame. Just because we can.
They used to call it, in medieval times, rough music - "Saucepans, pokers and tongs, marrow-bones and cleavers, beaten upon and sounded in ludicrous procession" according to Grose's Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue in 1796. The sound of the mob, basically: blaring and battering outside the home of an innocent party. Or, sometimes, a guilty party, but, frankly, who cared? The mob exists to feed and to fuel itself.
Yes, we in the media are guilty: guiltier than anyone of course in instant judgment, instant celebrity, instant condemnation. But you, with your snap judgments, and your anger, and most crucially, your ability to communicate all of this in a flirt of a second to the entire world, you have helped immeasurably to talk up Susan's fame, and will help similarly to talk up her fall. Just because you can.
Susan Boyle is a sonsie lass, as they say in Scotland: there's a fair hips to her. She's a wee bit simple. She sings pretty well, and good luck to her for that, and I hope she's karaokeing in the Happy Valley this time next year and starting to laugh at it all. But she is not the kernel of the world. And many, many people in Britain, in the first half of this odd and misbegotten year, need to shout a little less, and get out a little more

O jee... dit vreesde ik al vanaf het eerste moment dat ik deze sociaal en verstandelijk achtergebleven vrouw gehyped zag worden. Daarom heb ik het hele gedoe rondom haar (niet de persoon Susan Boyle zelf) ook altijd zo vreselijk gevonden.

A Met Police Inspector and police doctor were called to assist and she was then escorted to the private clinic.
A police spokeswoman said: 'We were called about 6pm on Sunday to a central London hotel to doctors assessing a woman under the Mental Health Act.
'Police attended at the request of ambulance personnel and the woman was taken voluntarily to a clinic. No one was arrested and there were no allegations of crime.'
A spokeswoman at the private Priory Clinic in London would not confirm or deny the star was staying at the clinic.
TV company talkbackThames released a statement saying the Scottish spinster had been advised by a doctor to take time off.
It said: 'Following Saturday night's show, Susan is exhausted and emotionally drained. She has been seen by her private GP who supports her decision to take a few days out for rest and recovery.
'We offer her our ongoing support and wish her a speedy recovery.'
According to other reports, after her shock defeat Boyle, from Blackburn, West Lothian, ran down a corridor shouting: 'I hate this show.'
She is accused of swearing and throwing a cup of water over a floor manager who tried to calm her down.
The alleged outburst follows a last-minute backlash against Boyle, who was favourite to win the competition for some weeks.
She was accused of four-letter outbursts at her hotel and speculation grew that she would not be able to cope with the pressure of fame.

Yesterday Morgan was joined by show co-presenter Anthony McPartlin who said it had been a 'blessing' Miss Boyle finished runner-up after the 'rollercoaster' of pressure she had endured.
Following her rapturously-received debut a few months ago, some sections of the studio audience turned on Miss Boyle, booing her after her performance of her signature song, I Dreamed a Dream.
Viewers were also left confused by her behaviour afterwards.
Miss Boyle pulled up her skirt to show a bare leg and also made a chopping sign after judges commented on her performance.
Her family revealed that despite her 'gracious' behaviour in saluting Diversity as worthy winners, she was 'devastated' and 'distraught'.
Up to 19.2million viewers tuned in to ITV1 on Saturday night to see Diversity crowned as winners. They received around a quarter of the four million votes. Miss Boyle had 20 per cent.
Morgan said of the result: 'I do think it may turn out to be the best thing that happens to her, coming second. I think she has found a lot of it quite hard to deal with and I think the pressure of actually winning and living up to all that expectation would have just carried on the mayhem for her.'
He added: 'I'm only sorry that the extraordinary tidal wave of publicity she attracted meant so many people got either bored or irritated by Boyle mania and decided not to vote for her.'
The biggest winner on Saturday night, some might say, was ITV.
The 19.2million peak in ratings, during the second part of the coverage, means that 72 per cent of people watching television had tuned in.
The last time viewing figures were this high was in 2006 when the World Cup quarter final game between England and Portugal peaked at 19.7million on BBC1.

However, ITV was feeling a backlash last night, with pressure from fans to introduce an age limit for contestants.
Viewers spoke out on message boards after seeing 10-year-old Hollie Steel's semi-final meltdown on Friday night, and the tears from dancer Aidan Davis, 11, on Saturday night after criticism from Simon Cowell.
Many viewers are baffled that while The X Factor has an age limit - recently raised to 16 from 14 - Britain's Got Talent has no such rules.

Well, there you go world! You made this mess! Just like that jerk Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby, you stood by idly and watched madness tear the world asunder. Go, sign your name on this Jackson Pollock-esque monstrosity. Apparently, after placing second in Britain’s Got Talent, our newest avatar for bold, feminist derring-do collapsed under exhaustion. Then she was rushed to the hospital. And you know whose fault it is? Mostly Simon Cowell’s. But also yours. Maybe mine too. In case you were wondering, yes, SuBo succumbing to exhaustion is almost as sacrilegious as flag-burnings or any Brett Rattner-assisted abortions of superhero epics. Because she was supposed to be what fixed the free world. Fail!
The upside: Exhaustion now puts Boyle on the fast-track to true diva-dom. Her tumultuous trek through fame is a path that took everyone from Maria Callas to Mariah Carey upwards of an decade to stomp through. But in a matter of months, Boyle’s not only established herself as a household name, but also turned into a force. And in losing Britain’s Got Talent, she’s remained vulnerable, while ultimately emerging victorious. And in suffering from exhaustion, she’s assured all of us that her take on The Emancipation of Mimi is inevitable.

"Elke hulp in een psychiatrische instelling voor een paar dagen is mijns inziens een mislukte behandeling", aldus Thompson.
Boyle verloor zaterdag de finale van het talentenjachtprogramma van de dansgroep Diversity. Kort daarna werd ze opgenomen. De zangeres zou na de show zijn uitgevallen tegen enkele producers van Britain's Got Talent. In haar hotelkamer in Londen zou ze vervolgens zijn ingestort.
Boyle's familie liet eerder weten ervan overtuigd te zijn dat de zangeres binnenkort weer naar huis zou terugkeren. Ook jurylid van het programma Amanda Holden meende dat de 48-jarige Schotse internetsensatie slechts toe was aan een pauze, 'zodat ze alles weer op een rijtje kan zetten'.
Thompson zegt dat de privékliniek The Priory 'geen rustoord of spa is'. "Het gaat hier wel om een psychiatrische instelling." De leidinggevende heeft begrepen dat Boyle mogelijk gedwongen is opgenomen. "Dat gebeurt bijvoorbeeld als iemand een gevaar voor zichzelf vormt. Ook kan het voorkomen dat patiënt zich niet vrijwillig op laat nemen."
Toch is er ook goed nieuws voor Boyle. Volgens een bron binnen Sony heeft jurylid Simon Cowell haar inmiddels een platencontract aangeboden 'om haar zelfvertrouwen op te vijzelen'. "Als ze het niet wil is het ook goed. Er is geen haast of druk mee gemoeid", aldus de ingewijden tegenover The Daily Mail.
