FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Curt Schilling, one of the finest and most clutch pitchers of his generation, announced his retirement Monday morning with his laptop.
Schilling revealed the end of his 20-year Major League career via his blog, 38pitches.weei.com.

"This party has officially ended," wrote Schilling. "After being blessed to experience 23 years of playing professional baseball in front of the world's best fans in so many different places, it is with zero regrets that I am making my retirement official.

"To say I've been blessed would be like calling Refrigerator Perry 'a bit overweight.' The things I was allowed to experience, the people I was able to call friends, teammates, mentors, coaches and opponents, the travel, all of it, are far more than anything I ever thought possible in my lifetime."

The 42-year-old Schilling last pitched in 2007. As it turns out, his final performance was a win for the Red Sox in Game 2 of the World Series, helping pave the way for Boston's four-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies.

Right shoulder problems prevented Schilling from pitching in 2008, during which he was under a one-year contract with the Red Sox.

"You rack up that much mileage that at some point you pay the price," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. "I don't doubt what he did in '04, he paid for it the next year and probably, ultimately down the road. But I don't think he would change that. I don't think we would either."

A free agent this offseason, Schilling continually hinted he might retire, though he kept open the possibility of pitching a partial season for someone, like Roger Clemens did the last couple of years of his career.

Schilling, however was fulfilled enough with his accomplishments -- both from an individual and team standpoint -- that he didn't feel compelled to return.

"Four World Series, three world championships. That there are men with plaques in Cooperstown who never experienced one -- and I was able to be on three teams over seven years that won it all -- is another 'beyond my wildest dreams' set of memories I'll take with me," Schilling wrote in his retirement blog post.

"The game always gave me far more than I ever gave it. All of those things, every single one of those memories is enveloped with fan sights and sounds for me. Without the fans, they would still be great memories, but none would be enduring and unforgettable, because they infused the energy, rage, passion and 'feel' of all of those times. The game was here long before I was, and will be here long after I'm gone. The only thing I hope I did was never put in question my love for the game, or my passion to be counted on when it mattered most. I did everything I could to win every time I was handed the ball."

Schilling compiled a career record of 216-146, notching 3,116 strikeouts. In the postseason, Schilling went 10-2 with a 2.23 ERA in 19 starts.

Weliswaar tegen de Blue Jays (waarschijnlijk de slechtse ploeg dit seizoen in de AL) maar toch...

Qua voorspelling zet ik mijn geld toch op Boston. Vorig jaar kwamen we net tekort in de play-offs met een niet fitte Beckett en geblesseerde Lowell. Met Beckett en Lowell plus aankopen Penny en Smoltz moet het dit jaar lukken. Yankees hebben weliswaar Burnett gehaald (goede zet) maar ik ben nog nooit onder de indruk geweest van CC Sabathia.

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The Texas Rangers cleared the way for Andruw Jones to make their Opening Day roster by releasing Frank Catalanotto on Wednesday.

Jones, who won 10 consecutive Gold Gloves as Atlanta's center fielder, recovered from a slow start and is batting .293 with three home runs and six RBIs in 58 at-bats this spring. The move gives Jones the team's final roster spot as a fifth outfielder and a right-handed designated hitter.

"From an organizational standpoint, we feel that he's made progress to that point where we want to let it play out during the season," general manager Jon Daniels said.
Catalanotto hit .317 this spring, but he's a lefty-hitting first baseman, left fielder and DH. The Rangers already have Chris Davis at first, David Murphy in left and Hank Blalock at DH. All hit left-handed.

Texas owes Catalanotto $4 million this year and a $2 million buyout of a $5 million club option for 2010. That figure could be lowered by $800,000 if he is signed for the $400,000 minimum this year and next.

Daniels said Jones' chances of making the roster improved dramatically when he told the club he was willing to be a backup outfielder and part-time DH. Daniels spent most of the past two weeks trying to trade Catalanotto.

Jones' slow start this spring came after he washed out quickly with the Los Angeles Dodgers last year, hitting just .158 with three homers in 75 games after signing a $36.2 million, two-year deal. He showed up overweight and battled knee problems all season. The Dodgers ate $22 million to get rid of him.

"I wasn't 100 percent sure exactly what we were going to see," Daniels said. "It was clear that he had lost weight, that his knee was healthy and that he was in a good state of mind. He did not have a sense of entitlement. He really got after it to make the club."

The Rangers signed Catalanotto to a $13.5 million, three-year deal before the 2007 season. At the time, they were desperately thin in the outfield but have since signed or traded for several players, most notably center fielder Josh Hamilton.

"Frank has been nothing but professional," Daniels said. "I honestly believe that he can help a club. I wish him luck down the line."

Cops say someone driving a minivan blew through a red light, causing the Mitsubishi that Adenhart was riding in to hit a light pole. Three people were killed in the crash, including Nick.

Cops say the person driving the van fled the scene -- but was later caught and charged with felony hit-and-run. The suspect is currently being treated for injuries in a local hospital.

We're told one of the other men killed in the crash was also affiliated with the Angels organization.

Nick was 22-years-old.

FYI -- Nick pitched his ass off last night, striking out 5 guys in 6 scoreless innings. His performance was hailed by sportswriters as a "brilliant effort by a 22-year-old right-hander making his fourth Major League start."

Three people were killed in Fullerton after their vehicle was struck by a motorist who ran a red light, police said.

The accident occurred shortly after midnight at the intersection of Orangethorpe Avenue and Lemon Street in Fullerton, said Lt. Craig Brower of the Fullerton Police Department.

Several witnesses told police the driver of a red minivan ran a red light at the intersection, hitting a silver Mitsubishi carrying four passengers. Two people in the Mitsubishi were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, authorities said. Two others also in the Mitsubishi were taken to a nearby hospital, where one was later pronounced dead, Brower said.

The driver of the minivan fled on foot, but police found him about a mile away and took him into custody on suspicion of hit-and-run, Brower said. Further charges are pending as the investigation continues, he said.

A passenger in the minivan was taken to Western Medical Center, authorities said. The condition of that person was unknown. A third vehicle also was struck, but there were no reports that anyone inside was hurt. Authorities said the intersection will be closed at least until noon as the investigation continues.

Angels rookie right-hander Nick Adenhart died early Thursday morning in a car accident in Fullerton, Calif., an associate of the pitcher told the Los Angeles Times.

Three people were killed and another was seriously injured in the accident, which involved three vehicles. Authorities are blaming the accident on a motorist who ran a red light with his van and then fled the scene. He was later captured and charged with felony hit-and-run.

An Angels employee, reached by telephone, said that the team was preparing a news release and that its media relations department was not taking any calls at that time.

The news of Adenhart's death was first reported by Maryland television station WHAG, which cited a family member as its source.

A gray Mistubishi, hit by the van, slammed into a light pole, the TV station reported. Two of the occupants in the Mitsubishi were declared dead at the scene and a third died just after 6 a.m. PT on Thursday.

A fourth occupant is at University of California Irvine Medical Center in Orange in critical condition, said WHAG.

It was unclear if Adenhart was killed immediately or died after being transported from the scene. A passenger from the van was taken to Western Medical Center in Anaheim with minor injuries. A third vehicle, which was stopped in the intersection at the time of the accident, was also involved but the driver was not seriously hurt.

Adenhart, 22, made his season debut against Oakland on Wednesday night, shutting out the A's for six innings in a game the Angels eventually lost, 6-3.

A 14th-round Draft choice in 2004, Adenhart made his Major League debut on May 1 last season and pitched in three games, going 1-0 in the three starts.

The shock of Nick Adenhart’s death early Thursday in a car wreck caused by a suspected drunk driver was beginning to sink in for family, teammates and fans of the Los Angeles Angels rookie. Adenhart’s death came hours after his best showing yet in the major leagues.

Fans placed flowers, baseballs, posters and Rally Monkeys at a makeshift memorial on the pitcher’s mound of the replica brick infield near the stadium gates.

“He was here pitching yesterday, six amazing innings, had a really good game,” 17-year-old fan Rachel Watson said Thursday. “Today, he’s gone.”

The Angels planned to pay tribute to the 22-year-old pitcher before Friday night’s opener of a three-game series against Boston in Anaheim. They will wear a patch or emblem on their jerseys the rest of the season to honor him.

The team postponed Thursday night’s series finale against Oakland to mourn Adenhart, who was killed along with two other passengers in a car crash early Thursday in neighboring Fullerton.

The car they were riding in was broadsided in an intersection by a minivan that apparently ran a red light, police said.

Andrew Thomas Gallo, 22, of Riverside, was driving on a suspended license because of a previous drunk driving conviction. Preliminary results indicated Gallo’s blood-alcohol level was “substantially over the legal limit” of .08 percent, police Lt. Kevin Hamilton said.

Gallo was booked into jail on three counts of murder, three counts of vehicular manslaughter, felony hit-and-run and driving under the influence of alcohol. No bail was set.

Outside Angels Stadium, a pile of flowers and tributes grew steadily.

“No. 34, You are one more Angel in heaven,” a poster read. Scribbled on a baseball was, “Now you play for another Angels team.”

Inside the clubhouse, the team met privately Thursday to remember Adenhart, who made the major league opening day roster for the first time in his career after overcoming a devastating elbow injury and subsequent surgery in 2004.

“A lot of these guys in here have never lost anybody in their family that’s close to them. I hate that this happened, but this is part of life. This is the real deal,” outfielder Torii Hunter said. “That’s why you’ve got to kiss your kids, kiss your family every day when you get up in the morning and before you leave for work.”

Adenhart was killed hours after making his season debut with his father in the stands, throwing six scoreless innings against the Oakland Athletics. The Angels ultimately lost the game, 6-4.

“It is a tragedy that will never be forgotten,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.

The rookie pitcher’s father spoke to the team during its meeting Thursday.

“He just wanted to say thank you for the opportunity, thank you for raising his kid in minor league ball on up through the system in the Angels’ organization,” Hunter said.

Adenhart died in surgery following the accident. Henry Pearson of Manhattan Beach, a 25-year-old passenger in the car, and the driver, 20-year-old Courtney Stewart of Diamond Bar, were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Stewart was a student at nearby Cal State Fullerton, where she was a former cheerleader.

Another passenger, 24-year-old Jon Wilhite of Manhattan Beach, remained in critical but stable condition Friday and doctors believe he will survive, said John Murray, a spokesman for UC Irvine Medical Center. He was being medically sedated, Murray said. Wilhite played baseball from 2004-08 at Cal State Fullerton.

Stewart’s mother said Adenhart and the others had gone dancing at a club about a block away from the crash site.

At the ballpark Wednesday night, Adenhart made just his fourth major league start and left with a 4-0 lead, before the bullpen gave away what would have been his second big league win.

During Thursday’s closed-door session, “we were just kind of reminiscing about what Nick brought to the team, to the clubhouse,” Hunter said.

“He was a very funny kid and he’s going to be missed,” he said. “Every time you come to the stadium and you go in that clubhouse, you’re looking at Nick Adenhart’s locker.”

Adenhart had made a slow climb to reach the majors.

He hurt his pitching elbow two weeks before the June 2004 major league draft, when he was projected as a top-five pick out of Williamsport High in Maryland.

The setback dropped him to the 14th round, where the Angels selected him anyway. He had Tommy John surgery — a reconstructive operation on an elbow ligament — later that month and spent most of next four seasons in the minors.

Adenhart had a 9.00 ERA in three starts for the Angels last season, but Scioscia said last month the right-hander had worked hard over the winter and arrived at spring training with a purpose.

He was made the No. 3 starter as the season began this week because of injuries to John Lackey, Ervin Santana and Kelvim Escobar, all of whom are on the disabled list.
