The aim of this course is to investigate the ways war is interpreted and re-presented through media (paintings/wood engravings, words, still and moving photographic images, internet), and in what ways people react to these representations of war.
Students have to deliver a paper, using the literature and focusing on one war in particular, always using visual images as one of the media of representation.

’The first casualty when war comes, is truth’, California Senator Hiram Johnson said in 1917. The problem, of course, is that reality always has to be transmitted and translated by artificial means for those who are at home and want to learn about it. By ways of telling, writing or giving visual images of the ‘fog of war’.
Questions that will arise during this course are: is objectivity possible? What was/is the role of the changing media that are used to give an account of wars? What is the changing relation between the parties involved: governments, the military, journalists and artists, (political) activists, and the general public?
The course will focus on two media in particular, the written word and the image. So, the stories people tell each other privately about war will be left out. This aspect is highly interesting, but it is hardly possible to investigate within the scope of this course. What, of course, is possible is to study the ways people talk about war on internet.

Al vind ik het oorlogsgedeelte dan weer wat minder boeiend. Maar de vraag 'is objectivity possible' is wel interessant (al is het antwoord natuurlijk 'nee').
