Obama zegt niet dat 'ie met een nieuwe aanpak komt. McCain legt de verwachtingen hoog maar kan ze niet waarmaken (wat je ook weer duidelijk in de polls ziet).

Ik weet het nog niet of Obama wel echt gaat winnen. De Republikeinen zijn doorgaans heel smerig als het gaat om "valsspelen" met voter purges, uncounted ballots, etc.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The presidential candidates seem to be spoiling for a fight ahead of the final presidential debate Wednesday night -- their last chance to challenge each other face-to-face before Election Day.

The onus is on John McCain, analysts say, to ratchet up pressure on Barack Obama because the Republican candidate has seen his poll numbers either drop or stagnate in critical swing states across the country.

McCain raised new questions about Obama's readiness to lead Tuesday as he campaigned in the battleground state of Pennsylvania.

"Perhaps never before in history have the American people been asked to risk so much based on so little," McCain said, warning that Obama could turn a "recession" into a "depression."

The economic crisis has proved troubling for the Republican nominee, whose strong suit is considered foreign policy and national security. But both candidates have come forward with a new package of economic prescriptions over the past two days.

The debate, to be held in Hempstead, N.Y., and moderated by CBS' Bob Schieffer, is expected to focus on domestic policy and will provide both candidates with another opportunity to define their economic agenda.

But McCain hinted that the debate will not just be policy-oriented.

His campaign during the past two weeks increasingly has drawn attention to Obama's ties to ACORN, which is under investigation for voter fraud, and to 1960s radical William Ayers. McCain told a St. Louis radio host Monday that Obama had "probably ensured" his ties to Ayers would come up Wednesday.

That was after Obama and Joe Biden teased McCain for not delivering his criticisms on Ayers personally at the last two debates.

The Democratic ticket, too, has taken its shots at McCain in recent days, calling him "erratic" and "angry."

"The other guy running for president is fighting mad, because he thinks he may lose," Biden said in St. Clairesville, Ohio, Tuesday.

Despite the rancor, Chris Kofinis, former campaign spokesman for John Edwards, said Obama's got to stick to policy on Wednesday.

"Senator Obama should do the same thing he did in Debate 1 and Debate 2 -- talk about his vision, talk about his policies," he said. "It's what's winning him this election so far."

Kofinis said he expects some fireworks from McCain, but the Republican needs to focus on the economy as well.

Kofinis said at this point, the momentum has slipped so far away from McCain "there's literally nothing McCain can do to change the dynamic of this race overall, let alone in this debate."

But FOX News analysts Karl Rove said the public should avoid "premature declarations" on the outcome of the race.

"There's plenty of time for a candidate to make up," he said, saying McCain needs to draw "sharp distinctions" with Obama over their economic policies and tax policies.

"There are deep and persistent doubts about Barack Obama's fitness to be president," he said.
The economic crisis has transformed the campaign over the past month. Obama has built leads nationally and in key states as the turmoil has returned the nation's focus to the unpopular Bush's policies.

The weekly FOX News/Rasmussen Reports Battleground Poll out Monday showed Obama pulling ahead of McCain in Ohio, and holding a narrow advantage in Florida, Virginia and Missouri. The two were tied in North Carolina. President Bush won all five of those states in 2004.

The RealClearPolitics.com state-by-state projection map now shows the toss-up states of Colorado, Florida and Virginia leaning Obama, based on the latest polling.

Now, the burden is on McCain to try to reverse his slide.

McCain seems to be looking to draw greater distinctions between himself and the Bush administration, even as his campaign argues that Obama's attempts to link the two Republicans are ineffective.

"We cannot spend the next four years as we have spent much of the last eight: waiting for our luck to change," McCain said Tuesday.

Advisers for each candidate say he will use the final debate to lay out his vision for the country and promote his economic policies while drawing differences with his opponent.

Obama's campaign released a pre-debate memo Tuesday that argued McCain was "ill-equipped" to lead during this crisis, saying his response "has careened, sometimes changing course within the span of a single day."

McCain has accused Obama of lying about his association with Ayers, a founder of the violent anti-war group Weather Underground. McCain has softened that attack on the campaign trail in recent days, though not in his TV and radio ads.

His campaign assailed Obama's on Tuesday for its "failure to explain how it is that Barack Obama carried on a decade-long friendship with a man who sought to topple the U.S. government through violence."

Also, McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin, is being dispatched to campaign in usually Republican states such as Indiana, North Carolina and Virginia to shore up GOP support. However, McCain campaigned Tuesday in Pennsylvania and was to return there Thursday as well, a sign of the campaign's sustained effort to try to pick off that Kerry-won state offering a whopping 21 electoral votes.

To win, 270 are required.

McCain's strategy relies on keeping Florida, Missouri, North Carolina, Virginia, Indiana and Ohio in the GOP column along with 21 other Bush-won states that aren't seriously contested.

That would give McCain 260 electoral votes. He would then have to win 10 more votes from a pool of contested states won by Bush (Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico) and Kerry (New Hampshire, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania).
