Toyota reveals cause of Glock crash
28 July 2008

Following Timo Glock's incident during the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim, Toyota initiated a thorough investigation. This initially established that a rear toelink (trackrod) gave way causing Glock to lose control of the car, but confirmed that there were no exceptional circumstances before or during the incident in the German Grand Prix.

Further investigation has established that damage sustained in the British Grand Prix two weeks earlier was the cause. During that race Timo suffered several incidents.

As is normal practice, some parts from the British Grand Prix were carried over to Hockenheim, including most of the rear right suspension. Although the parts were subjected to the normal test and screening process following the Silverstone race and passed fit for use at Hockenheim, it has become apparent that it did not identify an issue which subsequently led to the incident at Hockenheim.

As a result of this investigation, Toyota Motorsport has revised its inspection processes to include such cases and is extremely confident there will be no repeat.

Three years after the farcical US grand prix of 2005, history almost repeated when the NASCAR world gathered at the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway at the weekend.

Unlike the Michelin withdrawal and subsequent six-car Formula One fiasco, however, the premier class of American stock car racing still managed to put on a show at the former grand prix venue.

But the crowd was less than amused that Goodyear's tyre problems resulted in officials ordering mandatory 'competition yellows' - caution periods - every 10 to 12 laps.

Goodyear's problem was similar to Michelin's in 2005; the tyres were simply no match for the unique diamond-cut grooves in the Indianapolis tarmac.

But in 2005, it was the construction of the Michelin tyre that was failing because of the demands of the banked corner, while NASCAR competitors were simply wearing through to the canvas in a handful of laps.

Colombian driver Juan Pablo Montoya competed in both events, and was one of the victims of a failed tyre at Indianapolis on Sunday.

The Ferrari driver bought the 1974 Chevrolet, previously owned by Hollywood actor Sharon Stone, for 200,000 Euros at a charity auction at Monaco two months ago.

But since making the highest bid, Räikkönen, 28, has heard nothing about his car.

"I haven't got it yet," he told the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport.

"Honestly, I don't even know where it is, whether I have to pick it up or if they are sending it to me."

Räikkönen, however, who is among F1's highest paid drivers, is unlikely to be losing sleep over the matter.

"I didn't buy it because I really wanted it, but just for charity," he insists.

Domenicali: No crisis at Ferrari

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali has rejected suggestions that the Italian squad are in a crisis following the disappointing results of the last two races.

The Maranello-based outfit dominated the French Grand Prix but then saw rivals McLaren emerge as the team to beat in Britain and Germany, where Ferrari managed a third place as their best result.

Their performance in the last two outings has meant Lewis Hamilton now leads the drivers' championship by four points from Felipe Massa and seven from Kimi Raikkonen.

But despite their poor run of results, Domenicali insists the team are still in a very strong position and claims the standings reflect that.

"Despite the fact the last two races have been negative for us, the Scuderia is definitely not in crisis," said Domenicali. "The team is still leading the constructors' championship and theoretically, one of our drivers could again be back at the top of the drivers' classification on Sunday night.

"We are on a similar points tally to last year, we have won half the races so far and indeed, taken half the pole positions. Just as we never felt we were unbeatable after our French GP victory, so too, we do not feel all is lost after the British and German events.

"The entire squad is doing its best to overturn this situation. We have come from behind before and in fact, we have emerged as the top team at the end of the season, having been in much greater difficulty than we are now.

"If we look at where Ferrari was in 2007 after ten races, today we are in a much better position and this year, there is one more race than last, which gives us even more opportunities to fight back."

We reported some months ago that we believed that Fernando Alonso had signed a deal to race for Ferrari in 2010. This has been consistently denied by all concerned, but the rumours do not go away and the latest is that the Spaniard is looking at buying a house in the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland, which would be close enough to get to and from Maranello without too much drama. His current house near Geneva makes travel much more complicated.

It seems from what we are hearing that Alonso's future will largely depend on what happens to Kimi Raikkonen as the Finn may possibly retire at the end of the current season and that would give Ferrari a problem for next year. We believe that Alonso is waiting to see what happens and could be in a red car in 2009 if Raikkonen decides that he has had enough.

His personal travails aside, Max Mosley is also under pressure on another front. He is being urged by Formula One’s commercial director Bernie Ecclestone’s partner, the venture capital firm CVC, to sign a new “Concorde Agreement”. That is the contract that dictates the terms on which teams compete in races and on which TV revenues and prize money are allocated. CVC is rumoured to be looking to sell its 75 per cent stake in the business – but Mr Mosley is in no rush to sign.

“They tell me they are in no hurry [to sell],” he says. “If a sovereign wealth fund came along with a huge amount of money, then they’d be tempted.”

Central to Mr Mosley’s bargaining position is the FIA’s right of veto over who buys the commercial rights.

“I would never give up [the veto] because you might find someone who was a complete disaster coming in, but we could soften it if the company has less say over what happens at a grand prix.

“Eventually I think we’ll agree a compromise with CVC where they abandon a lot of the control they have over the sporting side of the event. In return we will give them much greater freedom to sell the business to whomever they want. At the moment it is not a problem with Bernie there.”

A hot and probably dry weekend of racing awaits formula one teams ahead of the Hungarian grand prix.

Local weather reports predict a humid and possibly thundery Thursday on the eve of opening practice at the Hungaroring, which is located about a thirty minute drive from the centre of Budapest.

But Friday will be sunny and dry, before some cloud but temperatures in the low-thirties (C) predominate for qualifying on Saturday and then Sunday's grand prix.

The chance of rain on both latter days is very low -- between 5 and 10 per cent.

A German tool design and construction company already involved in formula one has this week bought the fixed assets of the defunct Super Aguri team.

Formtech GmbH said in a statement that it will use the former Honda-powered team's Leafield base to open its first UK operation.

The company said it hoped the move would lead to the forging of "business relationships within all areas of motorsport, including the provision of composite parts to formula one teams".

"We shall be employing a number of ex-Super Aguri staff who are experienced in the field of composite design and manufacturing," said managing director Franz Hilmer.

Formtech also bought Super Aguri's race equipment on Tuesday and hopes to sell it to someone wanting to run a team.

Kovalainen Staying At McLaren ?

Norbert Haug, the racing boss of Mercedes-Benz, has hinted once again that formula one partner McLaren is not looking to replace Heikki Kovalainen ahead of the 2009 season.

Despite the Finnish newcomer's difficult start to his career at the team this year, Haug said a couple of weeks ago that Kovalainen is a "star in the making".

But Willi Weber, the manager of Williams test driver Nico Hulkenberg, recently stirred up speculation about the future of McLaren's lineup by suggesting that Nico Rosberg might soon be making his way to the Woking based team.

"It can be assumed that Kovalainen is staying with us," Haug is quoted as saying by the German press agency dpa.

However, the Mercedes chief stopped short of saying McLaren's 2009 driver lineup is already set in stone.

The German said the outfit does not feel under "pressure" to confirm its plans. "There is no deadline," Haug added.

Teams set up body to work on new F1 deal

Formula One teams have agreed to set up a new association that will work with the FIA and Formula One Management to come up with a new Concorde Agreement.

Representatives from all teams, as well as Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone and CVC's managing partner Donald McKenzie met today at Ferrari's headquarters in Maranello to discuss the future of the sport.

Ferrari said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon that the meeting had been "extremely constructive".

The Italian squad also revealed all F1 squads agreed to set up the new Formula One Teams Association, a body that will work on finalising the commercial conditions and rules of the new Concorde Agreement.

"All the Formula One teams met today in Maranello and held an extremely constructive meeting, in the presence of Bernie Ecclestone and Donald McKenzie," said Ferrari in a statement.

"The teams have subsequently agreed unanimously that they will establish the new Formula One Teams Association to work with the FIA and FOM to agree upon regulations and commercial conditions which will provide a framework for a strong and dynamic sport."

McLaren confirm Kovalainen for 2009

Heikki Kovalainen will remain alongside Lewis Hamilton at McLaren next year, his team confirmed to autosport.com in Hungary on Thursday.

The Finn joined the Woking-based at the start of this season and, although being quick in qualifying, bad luck has robbed him of several points-finishing positions.

He has taken just one podium finish, where he finished third in Malaysia, but secured his maiden pole position at the British Grand Prix.

It is understood that Kovalainen's contract with McLaren contained an option for his services next year and the team have ended speculation about his future by confirming he will remain there.

Although there is no official statement, McLaren F1 CEO Martin Whitmarsh told autosport.com that Kovalainen would be continuing with the team.

"We welcomed Heikki on board at the start of the year," said Whitmarsh. "He is under contract to Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, and will continue to race for us in the 2009 season."

Het incident zou op de weg terug naar het vliegveld hebben plaatsgevonden. Schumacher, die met een Fiat Ducato reed, zou bij het inhalen van een oudere vrouw de voetganger hebben geraakt. Sabine Khem, de woordvoerster van Schumacher, bevestigde dat de Duitser zondag betrokken was bij een verkeersincident.

Renault's Millar died from shot in the head

Police have confirmed the Renault staff member who was killed earlier this week at their factory died from a shot to the head.

Thames Valley Police said, however, that they were not treating William Millar's death as suspicious, which seems to suggest the 53-year-old killed himself.

"A 53-year-old man was seen walking down a bridleway on the Renault site," a Police spokesman was quoted as saying by the Telegraph.

"A few moments later a shot was fired. His body was discovered at the scene and he had died from a shot to the head.

"We are not treating this incident as suspicious and a file has been passed to the coroner."

The newspaper said a post-mortem examination is due to be carried out today.

Bernie Ecclestone will travel to the Hungaroring today in his chauffeur-driven limousine, along the road the Hungarians named after the man who has run Formula One as a personal fiefdom for almost three decades.

The sport without Ecclestone is unimaginable but Max Mosley, the president of the FIA, the governing body, and his running mate as they built the sport into one of the wealthiest in the world, has raised that prospect for the first time. Mosley suggests that Ecclestone could be the stumbling block to the sport's future.

As he rehabilitates himself from his anguished legal action against a national newspaper, Mosley has turned back to the business of shaping a Formula One future that appears to exclude Ecclestone. Vultures are circling as speculation grows that CVC Capital Partners, the private equity group that owns 75 per cent of the commercial operation, is set to sell up.

CVC bought control over Formula One's lucrative commercial rights two years ago after a period of turbulence when it seemed that Ecclestone had lost his grip. But the billionaire was kept on by CVC as chief executive of Formula One Management (FOM), simply because he pulls every string in the Formula One paddock.

But a sale could spell the end of the reign of Ecclestone, who is 78 in October, according to Mosley, 68, who confirmed this week that he is standing down from his post next year. He said: “If a sovereign wealth fund came along with a huge amount of money, then CVC would be tempted, but I suspect it would be getting to the stage where Bernie is replaced. If someone wanted to buy it, the whole business depends on a man who is 78 years old.” Mosley believes that the answer is for the FIA to take greater control over the sport and force a redistribution of wealth. Ecclestone and CVC pay the teams half of Formula One's income, but Mosley wants that increased to 75 per cent - a figure that might make CVC wonder whether it is worth holding on to Formula One. CVC hardly needs it: the company owns blue-chip brands in Britain such as Debenhams and the Saga-AA group.

Mosley said: “Eventually, I think we will agree a compromise while they [CVC] abandon a lot of control that they have over the sporting side and, in return, we [the FIA] will give them much greater freedom to sell the business to whomever they want.”

Hungarian race gets contract extension


Hungarian Grand Prix bosses have extended their deal to host the race until 2016, it was announced on Sunday morning.

The Hungaroring already had a deal until 2011 but, following discussions over the weekend with Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone, they have agreed on a five-year contract extension.

A statement issued on Sunday morning said that Ecclestone signed the deal with Hungary's Minister Responsible for Sport, Istvan Gyenesei.
