Ferrari could debut a radical solution at the front of its F2008 single seater at the Bahrain Grand Prix next month, reports say. It was rumoured in the recent pre-season period that the upcoming innovation was effectively an opening in the upper front of the car's nose; approximately where the Bridgestone 'B' logo is currently located.
"Its function is probably to use the central part of the front wing in a better way," Red Bull Technical Ddirector Geoff Willis speculated.
The Spanish newspaper Diario AS suggests that the new Ferrari nose will be debuted in Bahrain, the third stop on the 2008 calendar, or possibly at the following race at Barcelona.

Ferrari eens met striktere regels m.b.t. 'engine mapping'
(17/3/2008) De in 2008 geïntroduceerde standaard Electronic Control Unit (ECU) bleek nog niet het gewenste effect te hebben. Het lukte de Formule 1 teams een soort van launch control na te bootsen door gebruik te maken van verschillende 'engine mappings', instellingen die betrekking hebben op de motor.
De launch control is nou net wat de FIA poogde te verbannen met de standaardisatie van een deel van de elektronica.
De verantwoordelijke voor de Ferrari krachtbronnen, Gilles Simon, is dan ook blij met de door de FIA opgelegde regel die stelt dat de engine mapping de eerste anderhalve minuut na de start niet veranderd mag worden. Dat zou genoeg zijn om de teams ervan te weerhouden een speciale mapping te gebruiken bij de start. Met een instelling van de motor die puur is gericht op de acceleratie in een rechte lijn, is het namelijk lastig een hele ronde af te leggen. Simon: "Een mapping speciaal voor de start, levert een compleet onbestuurbare auto op na die start. Deze maatregel dwingt ons om verstandig om te gaan met de instellingen van de motor."

Fernando Alonso heeft verklaard dat hij niet eeuwig geduld op kan brengen bij Renault. Hij beseft dat er nog een lange weg te gaan is voor hij weer vooraan mee kan strijden, maar de auto moet dit jaar nog wel verbeteren, omdat zijn geduld anders opraakt.
"Ik heb wel geduld, maar veel? Nee, dat niet", zei Alonso in een interview met de Spaanse radiozender SER. "Vorig jaar lag ik de laatste paar races van het jaar vierde, achter de Ferrari's en Lewis Hamilton en in Australië eindigde ik weer als vierde. Voorlopig bevind ik me dus in dezelfde positie als vorig jaar. Het is een lang jaar, dat weet ik, maar mijn moreel zal natuurlijk wel stijgen wanneer we goede resultaten behalen. Wanneer we echter stagneren of slechter worden, dan zal mijn geduld opraken."
"Het enige wat we kunnen doen is hard werken en het team voor honderd procent motiveren. We hebben nog niet alles gegeven en er is zeker potentie om te verbeteren", vervolgde de Spanjaard in het gesprek. "We komen nu nog acht tienden te kort op de topteams en in de race is dit zelfs een seconde, maar we zijn nog maar twee maanden met deze auto bezig en we weten wat we moeten verbeteren. Het gaat vooral om de aërodynamica en de remmen."

Nog ff een vraag trouwens, aangezien ik t niet ergens terug kan vinden. Als je uitvalt mag je motor en versnellingsbak wisselen zonder penalty, maar bv. in Australie zijn Raikonen en Bourdais wel geclasseerd en kregen punten. Mogen ze dan ook gewoon wisselen zonder straf?
edit: Lees net dat t idd ongestraft kan in dat geval, en zoiezo zou de eerste motorwissel dit jaar toch zonder straf zijn

De motorwissel zal Ferrari geen strafplaatsen op de grid kosten, omdat beide rijders de finishvlag niet zagen in Melbourne. Scuderia Toro Rosso have been put up for sale, with joint owner Dietrich Mateschitz wanting a new buyer to be in place by the end of next season.
The Italian outfit have been surrounded by speculation for months that Mateschitz and fellow shareholder Gerhard Berger were looking at selling the team - although each time this was denied by those involved.
However, with the new Concorde Agreement meaning that customer cars will be outlawed from the start of 2010, Mateschitz has said there is no way he can continue operating his junior team.
And in the wake of a points-scoring performance in last weekend's Australian Grand Prix, the Austrian has told the website of Swiss publication Motorsport Aktuell that he plans to sell it.
"It is not a big secret that we have put Toro Rosso on the market," he said in the exclusive interview.
"For the start of 2010 there will be a rule change and there will be no more synergy regarding design and construction of cars between Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso.
"There I see the necessity that we continue with one team only. We will not sell Toro Rosso during the 2008 season, but it will be before 2010."
Speculation about a plan to sell Toro Rosso emerged in Melbourne last weekend when Russian businessman Roustam Tariko was a notable guest of Berger. Tariko was linked with a bid by Eddie Irvine several years ago to buy an F1 team.
Another name who has been linked with a bid to buy Toro Rosso is Tony Teixeira, the A1GP chairman.
Mateschitz has drawn short of saying who he is talking to about the sale, but made it clear that he would only sell a quality buyer.
"We will only sell the team if it is put into safe hands," he said.
Toro Rosso was formed at the start of 2006, after Mateschitz bought the team off Minardi boss Paul Stoddart.

Jean Todt has quit as executive director of Ferrari to become a consultant for the Italian company.
The Frenchman left his position as sports director of the Formula One racing team to become executive director of the whole Ferrari group at the end of last season.
But after a few months in his new post, Todt has decided he wanted a job that would take up less of his time. "A new chapter in my life is opening during which I will have more time to look after myself and my interests," he said.
Todt joined Ferrari in July 1993 before taking over the team's top post in 2004. He helped guide them to six successive constructors' titles and five consecutive drivers' titles.

With Ferrari-McLaren relations at an all time low, paddock gossip is inevitably doing the rounds that Ferrari is now unhappier than ever about tackling this season and beyond with the new McLaren-developed control electronics.
Following the investigation back at Maranello this week into Ferrari's two failed race engines in Australia, speculation suggests that the Italian team has found that the design of the team's V8 power plant itself was not responsible for the problems.
It is similarly being reported that Ferrari thinks the fuel pressure problem that stranded Kimi Raikkonen down the Melbourne grid last Saturday is also related to the McLaren ECU."This kind of thing can happen when you are working with one procedure that you do not know so well. Now we know that there is a conflict we can make sure it does not happen again," a team spokesman told GP Week.
Team boss Stefano Domenicali, meanwhile, also suggested that Ferrari's Albert Park dramas could be related to the new ECU, which is developed jointly by Woking based McLaren Electronic Systems and Microsoft, and awarded the tender to equip all F1 cars until 2010 by the FIA.
Domenicali said of the system: "We must still discover it in full."

BBC win Formula One rights from ITV

Formula 1 will return to the BBC as the BBC has regained the British television rights to formula One from rivals ITV. BBC has signed a five-year deal with Bernie Ecclestone's FOM. It means Formula 1 will be back to public broadcaster BBC after 12 years of F1 at ITV.
Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone was excited about the deal with BBC: "The BBC has some innovative ideas to consolidate and expand our UK fan base. It's not that we are unhappy with ITV but I think maybe they will have their hands full with other things and maybe the BBC can service us a bit better. I think they will be able to service us an awful lot better, a little bit more time.
"I think it will be good, a fresh face. I'm not complaining about ITV, I'm not saying they did a bad job or anything like that. But with all the other things they are loaded up with - and who knows they will get some more stuff - maybe it will be a bit more difficult to spend as much time on us. I think the BBC will do that."
The BBC gained world wide respect with its Formula 1 coverage thanks to its legendary commentator Murray Walker.

Voormalig Formule1-coureur Eddie Irvine heeft hard uitgehaald naar tweevoudig wereldkampioen Fernando Alonso. Irvine noemde Alonso een clown en vindt dat hij dit jaar alleen maar ongeluk verdient. Toch vertelde hij er bij dat hij de Spanjaard best wel een goede coureur vind.
Alonso, die vierde finishte in Australië tijdens zijn debuut voor Renault, gelooft dat Renault dit weekend opnieuw sterker voor de dag zal komen. Maar irvine, die in 2002 afscheid nam van de Formule1 en 4 overwinningen op zijn naam heeft staan, vertelde dat hij hoopt dat Alonso dit jaar gaat afzien.
"Hij gaat er echt spijt van krijgen dat hij niet langer bij McLaren bleef", begon Irvine. "Hij verdient elk ongeluk en alle miserie in het komende seizoen. Er wordt verteld dat de Alonso vs Hamilton-verhouding nog intenser zal worden dit jaar maar volgens mij zullen ze elkaar enkel tegenkomen als Hamilton Alonso dubbelt. Misschien zal hij Hamilton dan wel proberen tegen te houden, want na vorig jaar is hij tot alles in staat. Alonso is een clown en ik ken niemand die hem respecteert. Hij is een goede coureur maar daar blijft het ook bij."
