Hermes Franca released from UFC contract

Former UFC lightweight contender Hermes Franca has been released from his contract with the UFC, the 33-year-old confirmed in a recent message-board posting.

Franca expects to return to competition in July when his current one-year suspension ends.

Franca earned a title shot with then-lightweight champ Sean Sherk at UFC 73 in July 2007. After losing five times in six fights, Franca strung together a seven-fight win streak in a seven-month period (all were stoppages) to earn a shot at the lightweight belt. Franca suffered a unanimous-decision loss, and both he and Sherk tested positive for anabolic steroids in event drug tests.

Franca admitted his guilt, and the California State Athletic Commission issued the maximum 12-month suspension. Sherk, meanwhile, appealed the failed test, saying he never knowingly ingested any banned substances, and had his suspension reduced to six months. (The UFC stripped him of the title in December.)

In his posting on The Underground Forum, Franca stated that he asked UFC vice president of talent relations Joe Silva to release him from his UFC contract so he could compete outside the organization to help makes ends meet. Silva obliged. However, according to Franca, CSAC executive Armando Garcia told Franca that if he competed outside the country during his suspension period that he would never be able to compete in the U.S. again.

Franca now plans to sit out of competition until the July and earn a salary by hosting training seminars. He hasn’t ruled out a return to the UFC.

Franca (18-6 MMA, 5-2 UFC) debuted professionally in 2001 and is a former WEC champion. He is a veteran of organizations such as HOOKnSHOOT and K-1, and he made his UFC debut in 2003. He recently left The Armory to start his own fight team.

With the influx of new fight organizations and his popularity, Franca could likely earn top dollar on the free-agent mark.

Anderson Silva vs. Dan Henderson
Silva can't be stopped.. not by Franklin, not by Henderson
Al heb ik natuurlijk veel respect voor Henderson en zal het zeker geen walkover worden voor Silva!

Heath Herring vs. Cheick Kongo
Eigenlijk neig ik een beetje meer naar Kongo omdat ie met de wedstrijd beter wordt en hij zo fucking huge is.. denk dat dat in zijn voordeel gaat werken maar ik vind dat Herring zijn positief verbeterd heeft nu met z'n nieuwe team enzo.. leuk dat ie Rob Kaman binnen heeft gehaald.. dus ik ga voor Herring

Yushin Okami vs. Evan Tanner
Tja.. wat moeten we nog verwachten van Evan Tanner.. once on top of the world, now ... ... ...
Okami is erg saai om naar te kijken maar het is een meer dan degelijke mma-fighter dus ik verwacht dat hij minimaal een desicion victory tegen Tanner kan behalen.

Chris Leben vs. Alessio Sakara
Sakara heeft het nog niet echt kunnen waarmaken en zou hij hier van Leben kunnen winnen is hij waarschijnlijk toe aan een volgende stap maar ik denk dat Leben hem binnen 2rondes Knock Out zal meppen...

Jon Fitch vs. Chris Wilson
Chirs Wilson.. tja ik ken hem niet echt, maar ik kan me niet voorstellen dat hij zomaar van en Fitch kan winnen.. Fitch had wat mij betreft een veel grotere naam verdient.. ik vind dat ze bij hem best eens rustig aan richting een title shot kunnen gaan denken!!

Andrei Arlovski vs. Jake O'Brien
Laatste gevecht van Arlovski kan eigenlijk 2 kanten op zoals ik het niet.. ik krijg het idee (door het zien van zijn interviews) dat hij absoluut geen zin meer in de UFC heeft en zeker niet in 'iemand als Jake O'Brien'. Dus we kunnen een situatie gaan zien zoals Jardine/Alexander.. maar aan de andere kant.. als Arlovski gewoon goed traint, in shape is.. moet het toch zeker mogelijk zijn om van O'Brien te kunnen winnen al heeft Jake natuurlijk een leuke victory op Heath Herring behaald en is hij daarmee nog ongeslagen!

Luigi Fioravanti vs. Luke Cummo
Iedereen lijkt te roepen dat Cummo dit vrij gemakkelijk gaat winnen maar ik vind die gast niet echt speciaal ofzo.. mss mijn fout maar ik zie Luigi hier wel een 1st round K.O. scoren

Diego Sanchez vs. David Bielkheden
David Bielkheden.. tja.. dunno.. never heard of.. Sanchez by K.O. dan maar die David lijkt me niet echt iemand die makkelijk een finish forceerd!

Dustin Hazelett vs. Josh Koscheck
Koscheck moet ik sowieso al niet dus mss dat ik daarom zo verzekerd voor Hazelett ga maar Dustin heeft absoluut potentieel om ver te komen in de UFC.. ook Koscheck is volgens mij geen geboren finisher.. zal moeilijk worden voor Hazelett om een disicion tegen een prima wrestler als Koscheck te pakken dus ik ga voor een hele late submission voor Dustin

Jorge Gurgel vs. John Halverson
Dit gevecht boeit me niet echt.. Gurgel zal wel met een snelle submission winnen denk ik zo..

Leuke upsets ertussen, vooral Hazelett wat denken jullie ervan?

EliteXC Officially Announces Broadcast Deal with CBS

Pro Elite, Inc., the parent company of Elite Xtreme Combat, today confirmed the news that MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) broke on Wednesday: the fight promotion has inked a deal with the CBS Television Network that will put MMA on major network TV for the first time in history.

According to the press release, the two companies have signed a multi-year agreement that calls for four live EliteXC events per year. The two-hour live primetime specials will be held on Saturday nights.

“Mixed martial arts is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country and a wildly popular entertainment vehicle for upscale, young adult audiences,” Senior Executive Vice President of CBS Primetime Kelly Kahl stated. “It’s original programming for Saturday night. It’s live, creating an event-atmosphere, and it’s something that hasn’t been seen on network television, until now.“

The International Fight League previously broadcast on MyNetworkTV, which is technically considered a “network.” However, it’s the lowest-rated of the six major US English-language commercial broadcast networks — and its overall audience pales in comparison to a broadcast staple such as CBS.

“Our world-class fighters and the high production value of our events continue to drive ProElite as a global MMA organization that is fortified by the bedrock foundation of a partnership with CBS,” EliteXC President Gary Shaw stated. “Broadcasting our events on CBS will instantly engage a new fan base, as well as provide an opportunity for EliteXC to further establish itself as the world’s premier MMA organization.“

Other than confirming that CBS and ProElite.com will work on some joint online ventures to promote the events, today’s announcement confirmed few additional details of the deal.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ultimate Fighting Championship has inked a three-year deal with Anheuser Busch, arguably the biggest sports marketer of them all, that will go into effect at UFC 84 in May.

The deal, which will focus solely on the Bud Light brand, was announced today at a pre-UFC 82 press conference at Nationwide Arena — the same Columbus, Ohio venue that hosts Saturday’s pay-per-view event.

Early this morning, the UFC’s official website stated that a “special announcement” would be made at today’s press gathering. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) first reported that it would likely be the unveiling of a new blue-chip sponsor.

And as far as blue-chip sponsors go, they don’t get much bigger than Anheuser-Busch. The St. Louis-based brewer is responsible for 48.5 percent of all beer sales domestically. The company, founded in 1852, brews more than 40 different beers and malt liquors.

However, the deal with the UFC will focus solely on the Bud Light brand. In addition to becoming the exclusive beer sponsor for the UFC, the brand will be showcased with the UFC’s sister organization, World Extreme Cagefighting, as well as future seasons of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series on Spike TV. The WEC deal begins June 1.

“The UFC has developed a huge following in recent years and is wildly popular with the 21-34 year old fans we want to reach,” stated Tony Ponturo, vice president of global media and sports marketing for Anheuser-Busch, Inc. “The number of people attending live events, buying the pay-per-views and talking about UFC around the water cooler continues to grow. It⤙s just a great place for us to be”

Financial terms of the deal were not released.

Bud Light signage will appear prominently in UFC events, including on the cage’s mat and on vertical posts/bumpers. Signage will also be displayed during UFC weigh-ins and press conferences.

“Seriously, this is a historic moment for the UFC,” UFC president Dana White said.

Bud Light will be the presenting sponsor of UFC pay-per-views twice per year. It’ll also become the official beer sponsor of UFC Fight Night events on Spike TV.

Voor EliteXC zal het nu ook een kwestie van tijd zijn voordat ze een grote deal binnen halen (als ze dat nodig vinden). Denk dat een zender als CBS dat wel aantrekt
