And that’s the story of how Miller signed on with HDNet Fights for a Dec. 15 co-main event with Sean Salmon.

Well, that’s how Miller told the story, anyway, during today’s HDNet Fights media conference call. And anyone familiar with the personable and carefree middleweight knows he may have taken some creative license with the storytelling.

HDNet Fights recently signed both Miller and Salmon — as well as co-main-event fighters Frank Trigg and Edwin Dewees — to contracts for the Dec. 15 event, which takes place at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. “HDNet Fights: Reckless Abandon” airs live on HDNet in high-definition.

HDNet Fights matchmaker Guy Mezger today confirmed that both Miller and Trigg signed three-fight, nonexclusive deals with the upstart Dallas-based organization.

The signing of Miller came a just a month after the fighter officially severed ties with Zuffa LLC, the parent company of the UFC and WEC. Miller had been assigned to the WEC, but once he saw a way to escape, he said he took it.

Despite the fact that he was the only real contender to challenge WEC middleweight Paulo Filho, Miller said he had little incentive to stay with the organization.

“It’s pretty hard to get excited for (WEC) fights,” Miller said. “I know the WEC is pushing hard to be on par with the UFC, but I felt like I was back in high school wrestling again and fighting in front of 200 people. I wasn’t excited about my career.

“The Zuffa organization does a good job of trying to lock up their top guys forever. When I felt like I had an opportunity to leave, I did.“

Miller said he’s been treated phenomenally by HDNet Fights officials. However, he said the generous pay they offered (which was better than an offer he said he received from EliteXC), as well as the opportunity to fight outside the organization, is what convinced him to sign a contract.

“I have short amount of time to make a maximum amount of money beating people up,” Miller said. “I have no other job skills".

During Saturday’s “Strikeforce: Four Men Enter, One Man Survives” event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., the organization announced a major championship bout for a future fight card.

The announcement came from former PRIDE executive Jerry Millen, who’s now working with Strikeforce.

Millen announced that undefeated Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez (13-0), one of the world’s top 155-pound fighters, will fight Josh Thomson (14-2), who’s riding a six-fight win streak. The string of wins includes four straight victories in the Strikeforce organization.

Both fighters were on hand at Saturday’s event and entered the cage for the announcement.

The title fight will take place March 29, most likely at the HP Pavilion in San Jose.

Melendez, a Mexican-American who formerly competed in PRIDE and Shooto, defeated current UFC fighter Clayton Guida for the title in June 2006. The 25-year-old then beat Tetsuji Kato at a September Strikeforce show in a non-title fight.

The Thomson fight will be his first-ever title defense.

Thomson, a 29-year-old American Kickboxing Academy fighter, went 2-1 in the UFC from 2003-04, defeating Gerald Strebendt and Hermes Franca, and losing to Yves Edwards.

The charismatic Californian has one of the biggest fan bases among Strikeforce’s stable of fighters.

Greg Savage made the announcement on today’s Savage Radio Show.

Emelianenko signed with a restructured M-1 Global organization last month, but it was a non-exclusive deal. As MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) reported, the fighter recently penned an open letter to fans in Japan saying he wanted to fight for them on New Year’s Eve, which had become an annual tradition for Emelianenko.

M-1 Global CEO Monte Cox said the organization couldn’t work out a deal, but late last week, the Russian M-1 website (which is different from the official M-1 Global website) briefly posted a message saying Emelianenko was booked for a New Year’s Eve event at the Saitama Super Arena, a 22,000-capacity multi-purpose venue in Saitama City, Saitama, Japan.

According to Savage, Emelianenko will fight for an event organized by Hustle Pro Wrestling, which involves former employees of the now-defunct PRIDE Fighting Championships organization.

Emelianenko, the former longtime PRIDE heavyweight champion, was once considered the sport’s undisputed top pound-for-pound fighter. That legacy has tarnished lately, though, as the Russian heavyweight has faced just three opponents over the past two years: a 41-year-old Mark Coleman, five-win veteran Mark Hunt, and middleweight Matt Lindland.

Emelianenko submitted all three opponents, but the victories have done little to help his once-spotless reputation. This latest reported fight probably won’t help either.

Choi, a 27-year-old South Korean, suffers from a rare disease that causes him to continue growing throughout his life.

Although he has just one MMA fight to his credit, Choi is an accomplished K-1 boxer (who owns a career 12-3 record) and wrestler.

Choi made his MMA debut last New Year’s Eve in a K-1 event and defeated two-fight veteran Bobby Ologun — a 215-pounder — with a TKO via punches just 16 seconds into the fight.

He was then scheduled to fight recent UFC signee Brock Lesnar in the former WWE performer’s MMA debut. The K-1 Dynamite!! USA show took place in June, but the California State Athletic Commission wouldn’t clear Choi to fight reportedly due to a benign tumor on his pituitary gland. (Min Soo Kim fought in his place and tapped out due to strikes in just 69 seconds.)
