In an interview with the Daily Mail's sister paper, the Evening Standard yesterday, Mr Malinka denied any contact with Mr Murat, saying: "I have not spoken to him for around a year." Portuguese police sources said it was "bizarre" for the men to speak late at night, then claim not to be close.
One source said: "Why have both men been saying they hardly know each other when they clearly were on good enough terms to speak by mobile phone just before midnight? It strikes us as bizarre." The men were also captured on television cameras talking animatedly in the days after the four-year-old's disappearance.
Police sources confirmed they are "highly concerned" by the men's claims and revealed they have found new evidence to link the pair at the time of Madeleine's abduction from the Praia da Luz resort on 3 May.

Police are investigating a possible sighting of missing four-year-old Madeleine McCann in Morocco.
A Norwegian woman, who was holidaying in the north African country with her British husband, says she saw a little girl fitting Madeleine’s description at a petrol station. Mari Olli, 45, who lives in Fuengirola on Spain’s Costa del Sol, was in Marrakech a week ago when she saw the child she thinks Madeleine.
Norwegian Ms Olli, 45, made the sighting over a week ago but did not realise its possible significance until she returned home with her British husband. She said: "I didn't know anything about Madeleine's disappearance at the time, but now I'm more and more sure that the girl I saw was her."
The incident happened at around 10am on Wednesday, May 9, at a petrol station next to the Ibis Palmeraie Hotel on the outskirts of Marrakech. Ms Olli said: "My husband was filling the car, and I went in the shop to buy some water. That's when I saw her - my attention was drawn straight to her.
"She was a sweet, blonde-haired girl with a very cute face. She was wearing blue pyjamas with a little pink-and-white pattern, maybe flowers, on her top." Ms Olli said she was struck by the little girl.
"She was standing alone with a man about a metre from her. She looked sad and a little lost. She looked so alone, I wanted to carry her or something. "It struck me as a very unusual situation. It was very strange to see a little girl with light skin and very, very blonde hair standing alone in Morocco.
"If you're with a small child you would normally normally hold her in your arms tight. But the man didn't look like her father." She described the man as aged between 35 and 40, with dark brown hair, not very tall, and English-looking.

Muh, Marokko is niet zo ver weg, en het is natuurlijk slim een kind het land mee uit te nemen als je het ontvoert. Maar wel vreemd dat die vrouw zoveel details nog kan herinneren... Daar let je toch allemaal niet op, als je niet weet wat er aan de hand is?

Inmiddels nemen ze in Portugal de berichten over Madeleine in Marokko wel serieus, ook dat verdachte Murat wel degelijk telefonisch contact had met de Russiche 'getuige' (Malinka) op de avond van de verdwijning van Madeleine. Zo'n blond klein meisje in haar pyjama bij een benzinepomp in Marokko is behoorlijk opvallend.
Laatst zag ik bij het gemeentehuis een jochie met hele donkere krullen en opvallend lichtblauwe ogen. Het was een heel tenger ventje met fijne gelaatstrekken.
Als ik die later op beelden zie als zijnde ontvoerd, zou ik me dat zeker nog herinneren.

Maar het blijft natuurlijk vreemd dat Malinka beweerd Murat al een jaar niet telefonisch gesproken te hebben terwijl bewezen is dat dit wel geval is: "Last night cops were urgently rechecking his alibi along with that of Russian Serge Malinka, also linked to the case. Murat claimed he was in bed early the night Maddie was snatched. But mobile phone records were yesterday alleged to show that Murat was talking to computer expert Malinka, 22, late on. The first conversation was alleged to be half an hour after the toddler was discovered missing — and the last at 11.40pm from Murat to Malinka’s mobile. Malinka has claimed the pair only had a business relationship and had not talked for a year." The Sun.

"We are looking for anyone who was at the Ocean Club Resort or surrounding area in the two weeks leading up to Madeleine's disappearance on 3 May, who have photographs that might help our work." Detective Chief Superintendent Anne Harrison, of the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA), said it was possible Madeleine was still being hidden in Praia da Luz.
She also appealed for anyone who took a part in the initial search for her, before the Portuguese police arrived, to contact police on 0800 0961233.
Police have teamed up with a number of computer companies to deliver the technological power behind the website and the collection of photographs. As well as uploading them, police say the public can take any photos they might think relevant to high street photography shop Jessops, which will convert traditional prints to digital images for free.
A number of UK law enforcement agencies are helping the Portuguese authorities, including Leicestershire Constabulary, the Association of Chief Police Officers, CEOP and the NPIA.
