McCabe, 49, holds a unique position in the political firestorm surrounding the FBI . He was former director James B. Comey’s right-hand man, a position that involved him in most of the FBI’s actions that vex President Trump and in the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while secretary of state, a matter that still riles Democrats.
McCabe won’t become eligible for his full pension until early March. People close to him say he plans to retire as soon as he hits that mark. “He’s got about 90 days, and some of that will be holiday time. He can make it,’’ one said.

Als je goed om je heen kijkt zie je dat alles gekleurd is.
Bij de FBI kan dat inderdaad. Special agents kunnen vanaf hun 50e met pensioen na 20 dienstjaren, en anderen na 25 dienstjaren. Op zich is dat niet zo heel raar als je bedenkt wat FBI-agenten meestal doen. McCabe is sinds 1996 special agent, overigens. Dus hij zit zelfs al over de 20 dienstjaren maar kon nog niet met pensioen omdat hij nog geen 50 was.

Trouwens, politiek gezien, zou Wray zijn eigen positie niet onzekerder maken als hij een vriendje van Trump aanstelt als deputy? Die zou immers buiten de senaat om acting director worden mocht Trump Wray ontslaan.

Het enige nut van deze actie van Trump is het besmeuren van de naam van een getuige. Aangezien Mueller nu focust op obstruction e.d. is dat dus niet heel slim.
