Mr. Tillerson said that subject to consultation with other national security officials in the incoming administration, he would support calls to give defensive weapons to Ukraine so the country can protect itself against any further Russian aggression.

* Tillerson Backs NATO Mutual Defense Pact. Mr. Tillerson says as secretary of state he wouldn't suggest breaking Article 5 commitments in order to put pressure NATO allies to spend more on their defense — an action that Mr. Trump has suggested during the campaign. He indicated that other NATO allies should step up to the plate when it comes to paying their fair share.

Ik heb wat stukjes van de Tillerson hearing gekeken, eigenlijk was het Republican standard fare wat er uit die man kwam. Niet per sé slecht, maar wel een voortzetting van de doctrine die de VS al sinds het eind van de Koude Oorlog voert.

Maar belangrijker nog, vrijwel alle uitspraken van Trump over het buitenlandbeleid werden door hem teniet gedaan. Nu denk ik niet dat Trump veel support heeft gewonnen door zijn standpunten op buitenlandbeleid maar ik vind het vreemd dat vrijwel elke verkiezingsbelofte op dat vlak niet gesteund wordt door zijn secretary of state.

Tillerson had het toch lastig, Rubio (swing vote) is nog niet uit of hij Tilllerson uiteindelijk zou steunen in de committee

Lijkt me meer hawkish in vergelijking met huidig beleid. Zeker als het gaat om bijv. de Oekraine kwestie. Maar voor de rest redelijk in lijn met het Rep. beleid.

Shaub loofde Trumps aankomend minister van Buitenlandse Zaken, Rex Tillerson, die nauw met het OGE heeft samengewerkt om los te komen van ExxonMobil, waar hij topman was. "Daar zijn geen losse eindjes. Hij ziet af van miljoenen aan bonussen. Dit is een schoolvoorbeeld voor anderen."

Trumps advocaten zeggen dat het moeilijk is om zijn vastgoedportfolio snel te liquideren. Daarnaast zou een overhaaste verkoop de indruk van een uitverkoop kunnen wekken en de prijs drukken. Of kopers zouden juist een hogere prijs kunnen bieden om Trump gunstig te stemmen.

Shaub wees deze bezwaren van de hand. Hij herinnerde eraan dat het OGE al helpt bij dit soort overdrachten sinds het in 1978 werd opgericht als reactie op het Watergateschandaal. "Dit is ons werk. We hebben in het verleden aankomende functionarissen van beide partijen hiermee geholpen."

Volgens Shaub is het belangrijk dat de president zelfs de schijn van belangenverstrengeling tegengaat, omdat hij een voorbeeldfunctie heeft. "Kan de president minder streng voor zichzelf zijn dan voor zijn eigen ploeg?", vroeg hij zich retorisch af. "Hij vraagt zijn eigen mensen om een offer. Hij vraagt militairen hun leven op het spel te zetten in conflicten. Dus nee, ik denk niet dat desinvesteren te veel gevraagd is voor de president van de Verenigde Staten."

Tillerson heeft de schijn al tegen tegenover de republikeinse hawks als McCain en Rubio. En als zij tegen zijn benoeming zouden stemmen, is het over (of alleen Rubio in de committee als de democraten ook tegen zijn)

Het gaat meer over zijn antwoorden op de eerdere vragen over Rusland. Handhaven sancties tegen Rusland enz. En ook over zijn houding tegenover Cuba en de Duarte

Je zag ook de irritatie van Rubio met het constant dodgen van zijn vragen of hele tijd afdoen als 'I need more information'.

Ik vrees dat we niet mogen weten waar Trumps inkomsten vandaan komen. Het sleutelwoord in zijn gedrag tot nu toe is immers belangenverstrengeling.

Waarom denk jij dat Trump dit doet?

Ik zucht omdat je duidelijk niet hebt geluisterd. Het kan zijn dat je die persconferentie (nog) niet gezien hebt, in dat geval zou je hem kunnen kijken. Al die vragen die je nu stelt kwamen terug in die persco, met juridische uitleg van een advocaat.

Ik zucht ook vanwege je 1e zin: "Ik verdenk Trump er ook van dat zijn terughoudende reactie over het definitief verbreken van zijn zakenbelangen te maken heeft met zijn imago"

Ik weet niet wat je definitie van "terughoudende reactie" is, maar het feit dat hij al meer doet dan nodig is, is niet bepaald een "terughoudende reactie".
