Enkele belangrijke conclusies:

•Saudi-Arabië blijft een belangrijke sponsor van terreurgroepen als al-Qaida
•China heeft geprobeerd om Amerikaanse computernetwerken te saboteren en zoekmachine Google plat te leggen
Kort na de publicatie kwam het Witte Huis al met een afkeurende reactie. De publicatie werd "roekeloos en gevaarlijk" genoemd. De Amerikaanse regering deed er de afgelopen week alles aan om de publicatie tegen te gaan. Vanochtend nog werd een brief vrijgegeven die gericht was aan WikiLeaks-oprichter Julian Assange. Hem werd te verstaan gegeven dat hij de Amerikaanse wet overtreedt en met de openbaarmaking van de documenten mensenlevens in gevaar brengt.
Geen topgeheim
Voorafgaand aan de publicatie in de kranten en tijdschriften was al gelekt dat de Embassy Files 251.287 berichten en 8000 documenten omvatten. Eén bericht zou uit 1966 stammen, de meeste zijn van na 2004. Verder komen 9005 documenten uit de eerste twee maanden van dit jaar.
Geen van de berichten in de Embassy Files zou de kwalificatie 'topgeheim' hebben. Wel komt het gewone 'geheim' voor. Veertig procent van de documenten heeft de kwalificatie 'vertrouwelijk'. De helft heeft geen kwalificatie.
De website van WikiLeaks is momenteel slecht bereikbaar, volgens Wikileaks als gevolg van een zogenoemde 'Distributed Denial of Service-attack', een aanval van buitenaf om de site plat te leggen. De twitter-feed van WikiLeaks werkt wel.
Nederland
Volgens WikiLeaks zijn er 3021 berichten uit Nederland afkomstig. HP/De Tijd heeft een bericht over de voormalig minister Verhagen van Buitenlandse Zaken.

De VS en Zuid-Korea speculeerden over het instorten van Noord-Korea en over de eenmaking van Noord en Zuid. De Zuid-Koreanen veronderstelden zelfs dat ze China zouden kunnen overhalen om zich niet te verzetten tegen zon eenmaking met een paar goedgekozen commerciële en economische stimulansen (lees: business deals).
Toen de Afghaanse vice-president vorig jaar de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten bezocht, vonden politiemensen die nauw samenwerken met de drugbestrijding dat hij 52 miljoen dollar in cash bij zich had. Massoud mocht het geld toch houden zonder dat hij er de oorsprong en de bestemming van moest bekendmaken.
Amerikaanse diplomaten in Rome kregen weet van de buitengewoon hechte relatie tussen de Russische premier Poetin en de Italiaanse president Berlusconi. Ze hadden het over buitensporige geschenken en lucratieve energiecontracten. Berlusconi wordt van langsom meer de spreekbuis van Poetin in Europa.

Goed commentaar over het (im)morele van de lek en de publicatie ervan. Ik vind het overigens niet onverantwoord, het is aan de overheid om zich te verantwoorden. Sterker nog, WikiLeaks en de betreffende media hebben, wéér, de overheid gevraagd mee te helpen. De overheid weigerde.

There is no such overriding jeopardy, except from the policies themselves as revealed. Where it is doing the right thing, a great power should be robust against embarrassment.
What this saga must do is alter the basis of diplomatic reporting. If WikiLeaks can gain access to secret material, by whatever means, so presumably can a foreign power. Words on paper can be made secure, electronic archives not. The leaks have blown a hole in the framework by which states guard their secrets. The Guardian material must be a breach of the official secrets acts. But coupled with the penetration already allowed under freedom of information, the walls round policy formation and documentation are all but gone. All barriers are permeable. In future the only secrets will be spoken ones. Whether that is a good thing should be a topic for public debate.

The IRC source added that medical staff in Iran had seen missiles on a plane destined for Lebanon while delivering medical supplies to the airport, and that the "plane was allegedly 'half full' prior to the arrival of any medical supplies."
In addition, the source revealed that an IRC hospital in southern Lebanon was handed over to Hezbollah control, alleging that "Hassan Nasrallah had asked Supreme Leader Khamenei to allow Hezbollah to run the hospital during Dr. [Mohammad Reza] Noorbala's tenure as IRC president."
Israel has long warned of Iran's military links to the Lebanese militant group, with some officials estimating Hezbollah to be stronger now than it was prior to the Second Lebanon war.
Earlier this month, Channel 10 quoted the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Siyasa as saying that Hezbollah obtained a complete aerial array from Iran, including an attack aircraft and several unmanned aerial vehicles,

Alle grootmachten maken van dergelijke middelen gebruik om hun eigen macht te vergroten. Als je er wat aan wilt doen, moet je niet louter tegen de VS ageren, maar tegen alle (toekomstige) grootmachten in de wereld.
