STATE seismologists recorded eight volcanic quakes around Mount Bulusan in Sorsogon province during the past 24-hour observation period.

In its 8 a.m. Monday bulletin, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said visual observation of the crater and known thermal vents was not possible due to thick clouds covering the summit.

It added no lahar event was observed.

Alert level 1 remains in effect over the volcano.

Phivolcs reminded the public not to go near or inside the four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone, saying the area is at risk to sudden steam and ash explosions.

The agency also advised residents in the northwest and southwest sectors of the volcano to take precautions against ashfalls.

Pilots are also advised not to fly close to Bulusan's summit as the volcano might eject ash and volcanic fragments that may pose hazards to aircrafts.

The Phivolcs assured that it is monitoring the activity of Mount Bulusan.

Kuril volcano eruption threatens health
An ash cloud that erupted on Thursday from the Ebeko Volcano on the Kuril Islands in the Russian Far East could threaten the health of local residents, a spokesman for the Emergencies Ministry said.

The volcano, which lies 8 km to the north west of the town of Severo-Kurilsk on Paramushir Island, ejected a 400-meter-high cloud of ash and steam on Thursday.

"There is a faint odor of hydrogen sulfide in the city," the spokesman said, adding that the gas concentration was not life threatening. Locals have been recommended to wear gauze masks while outdoors.

There have been two known eruptions of the Ebeko volcano; one in 1859 and the last in 1934. The resulting sulfur emissions caused mass poisoning among local residents and loss of cattle.

Kizimen Volcano in the Russian Far East continued to spew plumes of ash on Monday, seismologists said, adding that most of the ash clouds remained below the altitude of 6 to 8 kilometers and that there was no immediate threat to populated areas.

Kizimen started showing signs of activity in the summer of 2009. Its last eruption was registered in 1929.

MANILA, Philippines – Three active volcanoes in Luzon showed signs of increased activity Sunday, exhibiting rock fall, moderate steam, and minor quakes in their respective vicinities, state volcanologists reported.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said signs of unrest were detected in Mayon, Taal, and Bulusan volcanoes during its 24-hour observation.

Phivolcs reported having observed one rock fall at Mayon Volcano in Albay and its steam was white and moderate.

Meanwhile, crater glow was not observed due to thick clouds covering Mayon’s summit.

“Results of ground deformation surveys conducted last November and December 2010 showed that the volcanic edifice remains inflated based on 2008 baseline data,” the Phivolcs said.

Alert Level 1 has been raised due to Mayon’s current activity.

While no eruption is imminent, Phivolcs strongly prohibited the public from wandering within the six-kilometer radius permanent danger zone (PDZ) due to the continuing threat from sudden small explosions and rock falls from the upper and middle slopes of the volcano.

“Active river channels and those perennially identified as lahar-prone areas in the southern sector should also be avoided especially during bad weather conditions or when there is heavy and prolonged rainfall,” it warned.

Meanwhile, 10 minor volcanic earthquakes were detected around Taal Volcano in Batangas last Saturday.

Phivolcs explained that two of 10 tremors, which occurred at 1:47 p.m. and 1:48 p.m., were felt at Intensity 1 by residents in Barangay Pira-piraso located at the northern side of the volcano.

Visual observation and temperature measurement conducted last January 10 showed that steaming activity at the thermal area inside the main crater remained weak, while the water temperature and acidity (pH) were within the normal range.

“Likewise, the Main Crater Lake remained bluish green in color and no bubbling was noted. Results of the precise leveling ground deformation survey conducted around the Volcano Island last December 2010 showed slight inflation as compared with September 2010 survey,” the Phivolcs said.

Taal Volcano’s status remains at Alert Level 1, which means that a major eruption is not imminent.

However, Phivolcs reminded the public to refrain from entering the main crater due to sudden occurrence of steam explosions and accumulation of toxic gases.

It added that the northern portion of the main crater rim, in the vicinity of Daang Kastila trail, may also be dangerous when increased steam emission is reactivated along existing fissures.

Phivolcs explained that the entire Taal Volcano Island is declared a PDZ, which means that permanent settlement in the island is strictly not allowed.

With regard to Mount Bulusan in Sorsogon, Phivolcs recorded one volcanic earthquake during the past 24 hours.

“Visual observation of the crater and known thermal vents was not possible due to thick clouds covering the summit,” Phivolcs said.

It added that no lahar event was reported or observed.

State volcanologists noted that ground deformation surveys conducted last November and December 2010 showed that the volcanic edifice was slightly deflated relative to August 2010 survey.

Bulusan Volcano’s status remains at Alert Level 1, meaning the source of activity is hydrothermal and shallow.

However, no entry to the fourkilometer radius PDZ is strongly advised, since the area is at risk to sudden steam and ash explosions.

Residents near valleys and river/stream channels were also advised to be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars in the event of heavy and prolonged rainfall. (Ellalyn B. De Vera)

Bulusan spews more ash
Restive Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon acted up again onTuesday, spewing ash in a predawn explosion before dawn, state volcanologists said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs) said the quake occurred at 2:58 a.m., accompanied by a rumbling sound audible at Monbon village in Irosin town.

"(But) the explosion was not observed because the volcano summit was covered by thick clouds. Field investigation conducted this morning confirmed the presence of traces of ash deposits in Monbon, Irosin," Phivolcs said on its website on Tuesday.

Phivolcs said Bulusan's alert level remains at "1." The alert level had been at "1" since November last year.

The volcanologists added the source of Tuesday's activity was "hydrothermal and shallow."

"However, no entry to the four-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strongly advised, since the area is at risk to sudden steam and ash explosions," Philvolcs reminded residents.

Volcanologists also advised residents in the northwest and southwest sectors of the volcano to take precautions against ashfalls.

Civil aviation authorities must also warn pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ejected ash and volcanic fragments from sudden explosions may be hazardous to aircrafts, Philvolcs added.

"Furthermore, people living near valleys and river/stream channels should be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars in the event of heavy and prolonged rainfall," Philvolcs said.

More quakes near Taal and Mayon volcanoes
At least six volcanic quakes were recorded around restive Taal Volcano in Batangas on Sunday and early Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs said at least two volcanic quakes were also recorded at Mayon Volcano in Bicol in the last 24 hours.

"Taal Volcano’s seismic network recorded six volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours. One of these events, which occurred at 3:01 a.m. early this morning, was felt at Intensity II by residents in Barangay Pira-Piraso at the northern side of the volcano island," Phivolcs said in separate bulletins on its website.

However, Phivolcs said the steaming activity at the thermal area inside the Main Crater Lake of Taal Volcano was still weak.

Still, it said the volcano's status remains at Alert Level 1, meaning a hazardous eruption is not imminent.

"However, the public is reminded that the Main Crater should be strictly off-limits due to sudden occurrence of steam explosions and accumulation of toxic gases. The northern portion of the Main Crater rim, in the vicinity of Daang Kastila trail, may also be dangerous when increased steam emission is reactivated along existing fissures," Phivolcs said.

Phivolcs also reminded the public the entire Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), and permanent settlement in the island is strictly not recommended.

In Bicol, meanwhile, Phivolcs said two volcanic quakes were recorded around Mayon Volcano in the past 24 hours.

White steam emission from the crater ranged from weak to moderate during the same observation period, it added.

On the other hand, fair crater glow at Intensity II - visible to the naked eye - was observed Sunday night.

Phivolcs said Alert Level 1 also remains in effect over Mayon Volcano, reminding the public not to venture inside the 6-kilometer (km) Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) due to the continuing threat from sudden small explosions and rockfalls from the upper and middle slopes of the volcano.

"Active river channels and those perennially identified as lahar prone areas in the southern sector should also be avoided especially during bad weather conditions or when there is heavy and prolonged rainfall," it said.

Meanwhile, Bulusan volcano was relatively quiet, with no volcanic quake recorded in the last 24 hours.

However, Phivolcs maintained Bulusan's status remains at Alert Level 1, and no entry to its 4-km PDZ is allowed.

"Due to the prevailing wind direction, residents in the northwest and southwest sectors of the volcano are reminded to take precautions against ashfalls," Phivolcs said
