Expatica's confused editor wades into the eternal Flemish-Walloon debate, a foolhardy exercise that should keep this site's letters page full to bursting until well after Christmas.
I am now going to do the one thing all foreigners living in Belgium should avoid like the plague.
I am going to talk about the Flemish-Walloon thing.
I have prepared for this foolhardy exercise.
The boffins at Expatica HQ have tripled the capacity of my email inbox to cope with all of the angry replies this article will generate from people who will;Berate my lack of knowledge of obscure early 17th century pre-Belgian history. Brand me a pro-Walloon lackey who only ever reads the biased and corrupt Francophone press. Bite my head off – in a virtual sense of course – for daring to comment on subjects about which I know nothing. And chastise me for over-simplifying incredibly complex questions.
That's the problem with the Flemish-Walloon thing.
Whatever you say about it, you can't win.
Believe me, I've tried. I've touched on this subject on and off for the best part of the past ten years and have never once managed to come up with something that didn't have 'angry from Overijse' bombarding me with furious missives.
One of my best efforts came not long after I arrived in the fair Kingdom of Belgium and was working as a reporter for an EU affairs newspaper.
The article in question was about how the Flemish were lobbying the Dutch – who at the time held the six month European Union Presidency - to ensure that Dutch was spoken at all official EU meetings.
That's the problem with the Flemish-Walloon thing. Whatever you say about it, you can't win.
Pretty tame stuff, you would have thought. And it was until I tried to explain to non-Belgian readers the difference between the language they speak in Brugge and the local lingo over the border in Leiden.
"Flemish, which is a dialect of Dutch…." I merrily typed.
Big mistake.
The newsroom fax machine (these were pre-email days) almost melted as incendiary diatribes from furious Flems rocketed into the office.
The irony is I really wasn't trying to upset anyone.
I was just trying to explain an issue that most people living outside of this small, strange, fascinating, wonderful little country simply cannot get their heads round.
I suppose for me that is the biggest enigma about the Flemish-Walloon thing.
I just can't for the life of me see why people get so worked up about it, at least not today.
Actually, that's not entirely accurate.
OK, deep breath. Let's not beat about the bush – and I can already hear those keyboards clicking from Kortrijk to Antwerpen – I don't understand why the Flemish are so worked up about it.
I've heard a lot of the arguments.
The most oft-repeated ones run along the following familiar lines.Flemish taxpayers send billions of euros south every year to prop up the health and social security system in corrupt, work-shy Wallonia. The French speakers used to oppress the Flemish and now its pay-back time. Most of us can speak French. They hardly ever bother to learn Flemish. We're just so different.
And so on.
I suppose some of these arguments may verge on the accurate. Indeed I guess there must be a grain of truth in them, otherwise why do so many people keep repeating the same mantras?
But I still don't understand why the Flemish have such a persecution complex.
And I don't understand for this one basic reason.
The Flemish so clearly have the upper hand in Belgium today.
If it were the Walloons who were complaining about being the underdogs I could sort of understand it. Because the bald reality of Belgium in 2004 is that in many ways and for all sorts of reasons the Walloons are the underdogs.
Just look at the country.
Economically, culturally, in music, in dance, in theatre, indeed almost any way you care to look at it, Flanders is so obviously where it's at.
So why do the Flemish feel so threatened?
Last weekend saw 86,000 Flems hit the streets of the leafy suburbs that ring Brussels to take part in or support the Gordel, a mass bike-ride designed to affirm their identity as the area's linguistic majority.
This bizarre show of nationalism was deemed such an important event that two of Belgium's most senior politicians – Vice Prime Minister Patrick Dewael and Frank Vandenbroucke, labour minister in the Flemish regional government – both very publicly turned up to show their support.
But what are the good people of the Brussels periphery worried might happen if they don't get on their bikes once a year?
That they'll all be forced to start wearing berets and singing Edith Piaf numbers?
If it were just the Gordel, you could perhaps put it down to a bit of mild eccentricity or misplaced national pride.
But it's more serious than that.
Since this June's regional elections the most popular single political party in Flanders has been the far right anti-Francophone, anti-foreigner Vlaams Blok.
This is a party that earlier this year was ruled legally racist by one of Belgium's most senior courts, that has been condemned by the Council of Europe for its overtly xenophobic propaganda and that is incredibly successful.
And its popularity stems from the feeling among Belgium's most dynamic, successful, and in many ways outward looking linguistic community that they are under threat.
Under threat from what?
If someone could please explain to a poor, confused foreigner I'd be forever grateful.
