Vergeten wordt dat die bende mede is veroorzaakt door een in Californië zeer gekoesterd en veelvuldig gehanteerd politiek instrument: het referendum. De Republikeinse oppositie gebruikt dat zo vaak dat de vorig jaar gekozen Davis continu zijn beleid moet bijstellen en besturen een onmogelijk karwei wordt. Dat de oppositie nu ook gebruik maakt van de bepaling in de grondwet van de Golden State dat burgers bij referendum vervroegde verkiezingen kunnen afdwingen, lijkt een mooie vorm van directe democratie. Als zo'n initiatief wordt gefinancierd door een aanhanger van de verliezer van vorig jaar, krijgt zoiets een wrange bijsmaak.
Bijkomend bezwaar is dat politici, van welke kleur ook, zich door dergelijk politiek gedrag nog meer bezondigen aan korte-termijn-denken. Bestuur dat uitsluitend is gebaseerd op de waan van de dag als gevolg van een permanente strijd voor overleving, mist elke continuïteit en stabiliteit. Als dit politieke melodrama navolging krijgt in andere staten - en Californië is bij traditie een trendsetter - zal dit uiteindelijk ook op nationaal niveau zorgen voor meer instabiliteit en een gebrek aan lange-termijn-politiek.
De koorts' in Californië wijst voorts op een ander fenomeen dat de Amerikaanse democratie meer en meer verziekt: de macht van het geld. Degenen met de meeste dollars en/of de beste connecties met de superrijken hebben zo'n enorme voorsprong op andere kandidaten dat die, hoe goed hun ideeën soms ook zijn, bijna altijd het loodje leggen in de strijd met het Grote Geld.
Mede daarom had senator John McCain in 2000 nooit een echte kans tegen George Bush in de race om de Republikeinse kandidatuur voor het presidentschap en kon de miljardair Bloomberg het burgemeesterschap van New York 'kopen'. En welke Democraat het in 2004 ook opneemt tegen George Bush om het presidentschap, hij lijkt bij voorbaat kansloos. De 'oorlogskas' voor de campagne van Bush raakt voller en voller, terwijl de Democraten de grootste moeite hebben met geld inzamelen.
Het zijn ontwikkelingen die aangeven dat de American Dream van een select groepje ten koste gaat van de American Dream voor de natie als geheel. De verkiezingsrace in Californië legt de groeiende kwetsbaarheid van de Amerikaanse democratie bloot.
